Washington, DC, USA — Internationally renowned communications technology entrepreneur and philanthropist Steve Case will be the keynote speaker at the National Building Museum’s annual Honor Award gala, which is celebrating the Urban Land Institute as the 2012 award recipient. Now in its 75th year, ULI is being honored by the museum for its long-standing, trusted leadership in responsible land use and sustainable community building worldwide. The black-tie award ceremony is set for March 15.
Case co-founded America Online (AOL) in 1985, when the Internet was in its infancy. Under his leadership as chairman and chief executive officer, AOL became the world’s largest Internet company, helping to catalyze global adoption of a medium that permanently transformed business operations and societal behavior. He oversaw the merger of AOL with Time Warner in 2001, and served as chairman of the board of AOL Time Warner until 2003.
In recent years, Case has partnered with more than a dozen entrepreneurs as an investor and mentor, in 2005 creating the Revolution company, for which he now serves as chairman and chief executive officer. Through its four divisions, Revolution invests in high-growth consumer-oriented businesses such as Zipcar, as well as businesses involved in start-up technology, health and wellness, and real estate and hospitality. Case is also chairman of the Case Foundation, a private family foundation he and his wife established in 1997, which seeks to strengthen the social sector through investments in hundreds of organizations, initiatives and partnerships in the U.S. and around the globe.
The forward-looking, innovative strategy that has guided Case’s work also characterizes ULI’s approach for improving the quality of life in communities worldwide. ULI was established in 1936 when cities across the United States were struggling to recover from the Great Depression. At the time, no organization existed to research or analyze responsible patterns for long-term urban growth, or to explore sound real estate development projects and practices. ULI was founded to fill the knowledge gap, starting a journey of leadership in land use and urban development that has now stretched around the world.
The organization provides the private and public sectors with pragmatic land use expertise and education through research, publications, and professional development. It continues to serve as the preeminent forum for local, national, and international industry leaders and policy makers to exchange ideas, information, and experience.
