Gold Rush in Danish amusement park

10 pieces of real gold nuggets, 24 carat, will soon be a new activity in the Danish park Sommerland Sjælland. These gold nuggets, worth 130-200 Euro a piece, are hidden in an old field and guests are free to try their luck and dig for the gold nuggets in a good old Klondike manner.

Sommerland Sjælland, situated only one hour drive from Copenhagen, is thinking new ways of attracting new visitors. A common activity in summer parks is washing ‘gold’, which can be changed for a coin or star, gold-look-a-like. This time though, we are talking REAL gold, with REAL money value.

On every opening day of the rest of the season, guests in the park have entrance to the field from 14.00-16.00 o’clock in the afternoon, where they can dig with shovels and bare hands, like in the old gold digging days. Modern electronic tools like metal detectors are not allowed, as the park seeks for the old gold rush feeling in their western theme area of the park.

A dream coming true

To be able to dig for real gold nuggets in Sommerland Sjælland is not just a sudden decision. The owner of Sommerland Sjælland, Kåre Dyvekær, has dreamt of having his own goldfield for years, and he is now looking forward to see his dream coming true:

“I’ve played with the thought for years, as it could be a fun and ought way to use our themed western area, Silver City. Imagine digging for real gold, and perhaps ending up going home with more money in your pocket than you came in with,” explains an excited manager and owner, Kåre Dyvekær, referring to the fact, that if you find one of the 10 gold nuggets, the park will buy it back for DKK 1000,-/133 Euro, if you would like to sell it immediately.

The gold is verified and delivered by a local gold smith Muld Plus Guld and the mayor of the local region, Thomas Adelskov has helped digging down the nuggets to verify that everything is handled properly.

The Golden Hill/Guldbakken is the name of the new acitivity, which opens for the first time on Saturday the 4th of August 2012.
