Irma Update 9/10 6:00 pm EDT

PREVIOUS UPDATE 9/10 8:00 am EDT

As of 5:00 pm EDT, Irma was listed as a category 2 hurricane. The eye was located near Naples, FL and traveling North at 14 mph. Sustained winds at the core measured 114 mph.

The following are current conditions for select attraction markets as of 5:30 pm EDT, and come via National Weather Service and WeatherSTEM monitoring stations:

Virginia Key, Miami – home of Miami Seaquarium (Frost Science and Jungle Island are nearby): wind 62 mph with gusts to 83 mph, 31.14 inches rain in past 24 hours, storm surge warning in effect for water 3-5 feet above ground level.

Naples: Winds 17 mph with gusts to 32 mph, 4.14 inches rain in past 24 hours, storm surge warning in effect for 11-15 feet above ground level, placing the Naples Zoo within the surge zone.

Tampa: Winds 20 mph with gusts to 43 mph, 0.96 inches rain in past 24 hours, storm surge warning in effect for 3-5 feet above ground level. Florida Aquarium and Clearwater Marine Aquarium may be within the surge zone, Lowry Park Zoo and Busch Gardens Tampa Bay are not, but may feel the effect of wind and rain.

Cape Canaveral (Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex, cruise terminals): Winds 8 mph, 5.94 inches rain in past 24 hours, storm surge warning in effect for up to 3 feet above ground level.

Orlando: Winds 14 mph with gusts up to 23 mph, 3.81 inches rain in past 24 hours.

FLORIDA ATTRACTIONS:

All theme parks, museums, zoos, and attractions in the state from St. Augustine south are currently closed and are scheduled to reopen on Tuesday at the earliest. IAAPA’s global headquarters in Orlando will be closed on Monday.

Hotels at Walt Disney World, Universal Orlando Resort, and LEGOLAND Florida Resort will remain open through the storm, but are only servicing existing guests and are not accepting new arrivals.

Florida attractions are expected to reopen as early as Tuesday, but that may change as they continue to monitor the situation and make changes accordingly.
