Living Color’s Aquarium Tanks to Flank Home Plate at New Marlins Baseball Stadium

Fort Lauderdale, FL, USA /Marketwire/ — Opening day for the Miami Marlins will take on a fresh new look and feel this year, in more ways than one. In addition to the spectacular new stadium that features a retractable roof, swimming pool, sculptures and other amenities, the 37,000 square foot LEED Silver Certified stadium also includes something no other ballpark can claim — two custom saltwater aquariums that flank either side of home plate.

Fort Lauderdale-based Living Color Enterprises, Inc. was tapped to design and build the aquariums, which will give baseball fans a chance to see firsthand a glimpse of the fish and coral reef ecosystems indigenous to South Florida.

“This was a unique opportunity for us,” said Mat Roy, president of Living Color Enterprises, Inc. “As a South Florida company and diehard fan of the Marlins, we are thrilled to have the opportunity to showcase Florida sea life to the stadium’s visitors.”

The aquariums, which were all manufactured locally in Living Color’s state-of-the-art, 43,000 square foot facility, are in place of a standard backstop behind homeplate and have been positioned to prevent any disruption to players on the field. These one of a kind aquariums were designed using the latest cutting-edge technology and incorporate unique features to ensure the safety and health of the many species of aquatic life that inhabit them. Many of the fish featured in the stadium are raised in captivity from Florida’s many fish farms.

The bullet proof polycarbonate to safeguard the animals and aquariums from unexpected impacts has been installed and tested. Balls have been hurdled at the aquarium at close range by Marlin’s team members and pitching machine without leaving a mark. The  museum-quality artificial corals and reefs are in place and closely match the Marlins new colours. Both aquariums have been filled with water and the advanced Life Support System located under the bleachers over 100 feet away have been thoroughly tested.
