MIAMI, USA — Working with landscape architects ArquitectonicaGeo, MiaSci has installed two parking space mock-ups to test the materials and design planned for the joint parking garage under the new Miami Science Museum (MiaSci) and Miami Art Museum (MAM) at Museum Park (MiaSci and MAM will share the parking garage and adjoining plaza).
Unlike traditional pavement, which is impervious to rainwater, the new parking spots are made of gravel, which allows rainwater to pass through. This porous approach replenishes the groundwater supply, disperses pollutants and helps to reduce runoff that would otherwise have to be collected, stored and treated and would add to the load on the sewer system. The gravel is made from recycled granite and porcelain waste and is secured in place by a PVC grid made of 100% recycled plastic.
The new Museum team is testing three different things with the parking space mock-ups: the durability of the materials, the color of gravel used and the method for striping between spaces.
