SimEx-Iwerks Opens 4D Theater on Historic Queen Mary Ocean Liner

Los Angeles, CA, USA – SimEx-Iwerks Entertainment has opened a new state-of-the-art 4-D Theater experience at the historic Queen Mary today. This attraction replaces a decades-old theater located in the aft section of one of the world’s best known ocean liners.

The 4-D Theater was designed by SimEx-Iwerks Entertainment in close collaboration with Queen Mary historians. This theater attraction will complement the look and feel of the Queen Mary and evoke a sense of old Hollywood glamour and art deco style.

“Our theater designs are becoming more and more architecturally complementary to our partner locations”, said Sal Agosta, Vice President, Architecture and Design, SimEx-Iwerks Entertainment.  “We strive for seamless integration into the overall guest experience with operational efficiency. The Queen Mary 4-D Theater is a great example of what we can do as a company.”

The 121-seat theater delivers a high-definition 3-D viewing experience with 7.1 digital audio surround sound and coordinated 4-D effects for a fully immersive cinematic experience. In addition to bubbles, wind and scents, the experience will debut an immersive in-theater effect that is the first-of-its-kind for SimEx-Iwerks theaters. A specially-developed on-screen sting will trigger the new faux fire effect, taking guests out of the rich Queen Mary atmosphere and into a modern, exciting 4-D Experience®.

“Our guests are not only going to enjoy the shows in the theater but appreciate the authenticity of the environment itself,” said Queen Mary General Manager, John Jenkins. “We could not be happier about the timing of the opening with our popular CHILL holiday event and launching this incredible new theater with The Polar Express 4-D Experience.”

To create an immediate connection to the Queen Mary’s history, SimEx-Iwerks has also created a custom pre-show experience with content featuring scenes from the many Hollywood films shot on and around the Queen Mary.

“The Queen Mary could not have selected a better or more proven technical and business partner. SimEx-Iwerks is an acknowledged industry leader when it comes to 4-D theater design and operations. We welcome them aboard and are confident this newest Queen Mary attraction will add to the ship’s overall visitor appeal,” Jenkins concluded.

Starting on January 11, the 4-D Theater will feature two new 4-D Experiences, Planet Earth:  Shallow Seas 4-D Experience® andSpongeBob SquarePants 4-D: The Great Jelly Rescue.
