Yeosu, South Korea (May 9, 2012) — At Expo 90, in Osaka, Japan, Sanwa Midori-Kai presented a 15-minute film about the Monarch butterfly and its migration between Mexico and Canada. Presented in the Magic Carpet theater, the show used two IMAX projectors, with one image projected onto a screen in front of the audience, and the other on a screen under the audience beneath a glass floor.

This year, at SEAVOLUTION, the German Pavilion at Expo 2012, Sky-Skan is doing away with multiple screens altogether by creating a complete 360 degree projection surface in a sphere. According to representatives of the German Pavilion at Expo 2012, “Visitors can look forward to the “Main Show”, a virtual deep sea exploration in a futuristic deep-sea vehicle. Thanks to a spectacular all around projection, they feel as though they are floating in a glass ball. Thereby they explore future submarine excavation sites and encounter bizarre inhabitants of the deep sea.”
This four minute presentation follows groundbreaking Sky-Skan achievements at two previous world expos:
- Expo 2008 Zaragoza, Spanish Pavilion: first use of IOSONO 360-degree audio in a dome
- Expo 2010 Shanghai China, Saudi Arabia Pavilion: 17,000 sq ft. screen (1,600 sq. meters) with 25 projectors. One of the largest-ever seamless digital exhibit screens
Marcus Weddle of Sky-Skan tells InPark, “Sky-Skan installed another Expo groundbreaking theater using Definiti projection technology and DigitalSky. This time it is a hypersphere dome with the floor also featuring projected surfaces. As you can see in the picture, it’s one of the most immersive experiences ever created!”
