Will the US participate in Milan Expo 2015? State Dept files RFP.

Milan_2015Inviting bids for a US Pavilion at Milan Expo 2015, the US State Dept today (July 26, 2013) filed an RFP.

Correction to the RFP published August 9, 2013 in the Federal Register:

In notice document 13-18171 beginning on page 45593 in the issue of Monday, July 29, 2013 make the following correction:

On page 45595, in the third column, the first full paragraph should read as follows:

Proposals will be deemed ineligible if they are not submitted by a U.S. citizen, corporation or U.S.-based organization and do not fully adhere to the General Regulations of the Milan Expo 2015 and the guidelines stated herein.

The RFP will be published officially in the Federal Register July 29, 2013.

We asked James Ogul to summarize the situation from his point of view. Ogul is a retired US State Department employee with 28 years of world’s fair experience. He said, “The timeframe for Milan will be very compressed. At the last expo where we built a building, Shanghai Expo 2010 construction took nine and a half months. There are approximately 22 months till opening at Milan. So this would leave 12 and a half months for everything else which would include fundraising, architectural design, exhibition design, exhibit fabrication and staffing and staff training. To the extent that any or all of these tasks are contracted out, time will be required for the contracting process. It will require a prodigious effort. All of that being said, we’ve done it before and I believe we will do it again. Kudos to the State Department for being motivated to do this.”

James Ogul

Milan 2015 will run May 21-October 31, 2015.
