5th FullDome Festival at the Zeiss-Planetarium Jena 12-14 May 2011

The Zeiss-Planetarium in Jena is pleased to present state-of-the-art fulldome productions and visual experiments at the 5th FullDome-Festival from 12-14 May 2011. Highlights —

The festival will give insights into the world of immersive fulldome projections and map current developments in this young medium. Initially featuring mostly student productions, the festival soon evolved into a meeting place for the international fulldome-scene. From 12 to 14 May, the audience will again take part in fascinating experiences, review the latest shows and explore in workshops the art of fulldome.

This year’s special focus is on Franz Liszt, the “European in Thuringia”. The three-day festival will show how Liszt’s artistic ideas and compositions can be translated into the fulldome format. Both, for admirers of the composer and fulldome enthusiasts, this official contribution to the Franz Liszt year 2011 will offer many surprises.

As in previous years, a broad spectrum of visual and auditory adventures in 360° will be presented in the program. For the first time, the festival will offer expert workshops about real time applications in the dome and presentations dealing with the question: “Fulldome – minority hype or medium of the future?”

All fulldome productions will be judged according to their quality, creativity and innovation. There will be record-breaking prizes for winning entries. The VisuaLiszt-Awards, totalling €7.500, are sponsored by the Thuringian Ministry of Education, Science and Art in cooperation with the Kunstverein Apolda Avantgarde e.V. and the region of Erfurt, Weimar and Jena as part of the Franz-Liszt-Year 2011. Three Fulldome-Awards again are sponsored by the Carl Zeiss AG, totalling €1.500: The Creative Award endowed with €500 for the best idea of a student production; the Performance Award with €500 for the best technical implementation of a student production; finally, the €500 Audience Award balloted by the audience at the festival gala out of the best-of election shown on that night.

“Showcasing Real Time Footage – The Revolution of the Full Dome” is the title of an expert workshop, where VJs and designers, lecturers, students and media artists are talking about the latest trend in fulldome: how to bring live generated images and sounds into the dome and how to generate new realms of experience. Thereby the MXWendler Media Server comes into operation the first time in a dome. The presentations on Friday are open to the public. The presentations are partly held in English and discuss: “Fulldome – minority hype or medium of the future?”
