Three countries are in the running to host Specialised Expo 2022/23: Poland (in Łódź), the United States (in Minnesota) and Argentina (in Buenos Aires). The host country will be elected by the 170 Member States of the Bureau International des Expositions (BIE) during the organisation’s 162nd General Assembly, taking place in Paris on November 15.
• Poland’s bid is to organise a Specialised Expo in the city of Łódź between June 15 and September 15 2022 under the theme “City Re:Invented.”
• The United States’ bid is to organise a Specialised Expo in Bloomington, Minnesota, between May 13 and August 13 2023 under the theme “Healthy People, Healthy Planet: Wellness and Well Being for All.”
• Argentina’s bid is for a Specialised Expo in Buenos Aires between January 15 and April 15 2023 under the theme “Science, Innovation, Art and Creativity for Human Development. Creative Industries in Digital Convergence.”
BIE Member States with the right to vote will decide on the host country by secret ballot at around 5pm (Paris time), following presentations by the three candidates.
In order to win in the first round of voting, the candidate must gather two-thirds of votes cast. If no candidate wins outright, the two candidates with the most votes will move into a second round, where the candidate with the majority of votes cast will win the right to host Specialised Expo 2022/23.
Specialised Expos, known officially as International Recognised Exhibitions, can be organised in the interval between two World Expos, and are designed to respond to a precise challenge facing humanity. The most recent Specialised Expo gathered 4 million visitors between June 10 and September 10 2017 in Astana, Kazakhstan, under the theme “Future Energy.”
