Los Angeles, CA (August 15, 2012) — InPark has confirmed through a number of exhibitors, including Celebration Cinema and AMC, that Steven Spielberg’s 1981 film “Raiders of the Lost Ark” will be shown in a limited one week engagement Sept 7 – 13 in select IMAX theaters.  The restored film is being shown in advance of the Indiana Jones collection’s release on blu-ray disc.  Spielberg told the New York Times via phone interview that the IMAX version will feature a new surround sound mix.

Produced by George Lucas, “Raiders of the Lost Ark” won four Academy Awards and was inducted into the Library of Congress’ National Film Registry in 1999.  The film spawned three sequels and a television series.  On the attractions side, “Raiders” was adapted into the “Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular” and a scene in “The Great Movie Ride,” both at Disney’s Hollywood Studios theme park in Florida. Indiana Jones-themed attractions also appear at Disney parks in California, France, and Japan.

Shot in 35mm, the film was blown up to 5 perf/70mm for some theaters during its initial release.  This year’s re-release will mark the first time a Hollywood film more than 20 years old has been remastered for the IMAX screen.  However, the current list of locations, available here, indicates only digital IMAX theaters will show the film.  This does not, however, mean that a limited number of film prints won’t be struck, such as was done with the recent IMAX 3D release of James Cameron’s “Titanic.”
