Bridging the seasonal gap

As mountain destinations worldwide look to diversify beyond traditional winter sports, Frontgrid is showcasing how immersive technology can solve the “seasonal slump” by providing a year-round revenue stream.

The shift toward a 4-season model has become a strategic necessity for alpine resorts. While summer hiking and biking are staples, they remain at the mercy of the elements and the reliability of the ski season itself is also in danger from global warming.

Frontgrid is challenging these seasonal limitations by bringing mountain flight indoors, offering a high-throughput, all-weather attraction that engages visitors 365 days a year.

Recently shortlisted for a Brass Ring Award at IAAPA 2026 for Best Family Attraction, ParadropVR combines physical motion with high-fidelity virtual reality to recreate the sensation of paragliding.

“The mountain industry is at a turning point,” says Wells, CEO of Frontgrid and inventor of ParadropVR. “Operators need to monetize their unique geography through all weathers and seasons. ParadropVR allows visitors to explore a destination’s peaks from the sky, regardless of the conditions outside. I am myself a former paratrooper and an experienced mountaineer based in Snowdonia, mountains and outdoor adventure are in ParadropVR’s DNA.”

Digital twins: Exploration without limits

A key differentiator of ParadropVR is its interactive autonomy; unlike passive VR, users self-steer, exploring environments on their own terms. Frontgrid offers both a library of mountain-themed subscription games and custom-made “digital twins” of a venue’s specific landscape.

Tammy Owens, Business Development Director and Producer, explains: “We are seeing a major shift in destination tourism toward custom digital content. By creating digital twins, we allow guests to ‘fly’ over the very mountains they are visiting – a perspective usually reserved for elite paragliders. Whether the focus is pure arcade fun or ‘edutainment’ the experience is entirely tailorable. We have also produced games which aim to educate people about environmental issues such as overtourism and light pollution”.
