Findings from IAAPA’s 2024 North America Economic Impact Report

Consumer spending on attractions and entertainment continues to soar, underscoring the lasting value of shared experiences in today’s economy. The 2024 North America Economic Impact Report reveals a record-breaking year for the attractions industry, with attendance exceeding 1 billion visitors and supporting over 1.1 million jobs.

This year’s report marks a significant milestone as the most comprehensive analysis to date, now including data from seven attraction categories: amusement/theme parks, waterparks, entertainment centers, zoos/aquariums, museums/science centers, historical/cultural attractions, and natural/adventure/eco/scenic destinations. Museums and science centers accounted for the largest share of attractions at 48%, followed by entertainment centers at 32%, while eco-attractions – a newly included category – captured 9% of the market. The inclusion of eco-attractions highlights the industry’s growing diversity and expanding reach.

Key Findings from the 2024 Report:

  • Nearly 22,000 attractions across the United States and Canada.
  • Combined attendance surpassed 1 billion visitors.
  • The industry supported 1.1 million jobs and generated $26.5 billion in tax contributions.
  • Total labor income reached $57 billion.
  • Attractions across North America generated a total economic impact of $188 billion, including $93.9 billion in direct revenue.
  • In the U.S. alone, 19,000 attractions accounted for 880 million visitors and $172.7 billion in total economic impact.

“As tourism spending rebounds and consumers prioritize experiences, the attractions industry has solidified its role as a vital driver of economic growth and job creation,” said Jakob Wahl, CEO of IAAPA. “This year’s report demonstrates how attractions, entertainment centers, and eco-parks are fostering connections and delivering lasting economic value.”

Michael Shelton, Vice President and Executive Director of IAAPA North America, added: “For the first time, we have a holistic view of the industry. This year’s findings showcase the full economic impact of attractions across all seven categories, including their contribution to jobs and labor income.”

The report, commissioned annually by IAAPA and conducted by Tourism Economics, an Oxford Economics company, provides a detailed snapshot of the industry’s performance.
