The Montreal Gazette reports on the Rio Tinto Alcan Planetarium in Montreal, Queubec, Canada:
“Montreal city council voted Monday night to approve an additional $2-million borrowing bylaw to finish building the new facility dedicated to astronomy, which is set to open in early 2013.
“The project cost is $48 million, including construction, equipment and furniture and the cost to build a restaurant and boutique, a civil service report presented to city councillors says. That’s a 45-per-cent increase over the $33-million price tag the city touted a year ago.
“The city awarded a $35.5-million construction contract to Groupe Décarel in June. The city awarded a separate $5.9-million contract to Sky Skan Inc. to supply and install special equipment for the theatres inside the new planetarium, where visitors will watch projections of stars, planets and other astronomical bodies on overhead screens.
“The city’s new $2-million loan, which adds to two previous loans of $18 million and $28 million to finance the project, will be used to buy electrical equipment and furniture, and build a boutique and restaurant, the report says.
“The new Rio Tinto Alcan Planetarium is touted as the showpiece of a $189-million revamp of the city’s four nature and science museums, which also include the Botanical Garden, the Insectarium and the Biodôme, in time for Montreal’s 375th anniversary in 2017.”
