(March 26, 2012) The Seattle Monorail opened in 1962 to connect downtown Seattle with the 1962 “Century 21” World’s Fair. The Monorail Society reports from the 50th Anniversary festivities:
“Seattle, Washington. Seattle’s iconic Alweg monorail turned 50 years old on Saturday. Seattle Monorail Services, the private contractor that operates the monorail for the City of Seattle, put on a celebration that attracted monorail fans from far and wide. 200 commemorative monorail medallions were handed out free to the first 200 passengers on the anniversary day. The medallions were similar to medals given to inaugural passengers in 1962. Displays with historic photos and memorabilia were on display in the Red Train at Seattle Center Station. A ceremony paid homage to the special event. Monorail Society President Kim Pedersen dedicated the first TMS Historic Landmark plaque and handed it over to Seattle Councilmember Jean Godden and Seattle Center Director Robert Nellams. Monorail Society members were treated to a special behind-the-scenes tour by Eno Yliniemi, the Chief Systems Engineer for the monorail. The tour included a visit to the shop below the trains. Seattle Center Monorail features the only remaining Alweg-built monorail trains in the world. The Monorail Society thanks Seattle Monorail Services for inviting us to participate in this special event.”
