Already the largest LEGOLAND® park in the world, LEGOLAND® Florida is thrilled to announce another major park expansion coming summer 2013 adding to the park’s already exciting line up of more than 50 rides, shows and attractions designed specifically for families with children ages 2 to 12. Based on the new product line, LEGO Legends of Chima, LEGOLAND Florida will bring this fantastical world to life with The World of Chima presented by Cartoon Network. Families will embark on a journey in search of a mystical energy source through a highly-interactive water ride experience, the Quest for CHI. Guests can also try their hand at an action-packed Speedorz Arena, meet the beloved Chima characters and be transported to the Land of Chima with a new 4D movie, which are all part of the family-friendly Chima experience.

This expansion will be one of the centerpieces of the new LEGO Chima brand, which already includes a major LEGO product line, a stunningly animated television series to air on Cartoon Network and multiple interactive video games and apps. LEGOLAND Florida is the only place in the world that LEGO fans can go to unleash the power and be fully immersed in The World of Chima, providing an experience like no other.

Overview“This is the first time a theme park has invested in a major expansion concurrently with the rollout of a new brand and product line, and it was an easy decision based on how well LEGO Legends of Chima has been received by children and those who are young at heart around the world,” said LEGOLAND Florida General Manager Adrian Jones. “This is also a reflection of the overall success of the park, which has already enabled us to open a new Water Park and build multiple new attractions during the past 18 months.”

LEGO Legends of Chima is the highest tested new LEGO theme in the last 12 years, and LEGO fans across the nation and around the world are embracing this new storyline of powerful tribes of animal warriors entwined in a struggle between good and evil in a mystical land.

As part of today’s announcement, LEGOLAND Florida announced that Cartoon Network is the presenting partner of The World of Chima and the Official Kids Cable Network.

“This is a great opportunity to continue the successful relationship that Cartoon Network has had with LEGO Group,” said Cartoon Network Chief Marketing Officer Brenda Piper. “We are always looking to expand the Cartoon Network brand to reach children outside the world of television and what better way to do that than by bringing the Legends of Chima to life at a theme park.”

RidevehicleAs the presenting partner, Cartoon Network will have a major presence in the park during the summer months, and beyond. In addition, Cartoon Network will have screens placed around the park that will consist of other content from the network including the hit original series, Adventure Time.

The Legends of Chima series will focus on the highly-advanced animals that live in the magical land of Chima. The stories of those who understand the true nature of the Chi, as well as those who try to conquer it, will be told throughout the season.

The centerpiece of the new World of Chima at LEGOLAND Florida is an interactive, family-friendly water ride, The Quest for CHI. Guests will enter The World of Chima through a fantastical stone and moss covered entrance which leads to the Lion Temple at the base of the majestic 45-foot tall floating Mount Cavora. There, guests will explore a diverse landscape setting and join the Lion Tribe in an epic battle to recover the stolen CHI orbs. Guests will board a watercraft which will take them on an interactive experience using water cannons to help their hero, Laval the Lion Prince, defeat Cragger the Crocodile King as he attempts to steal the precious supply of CHI. The journey will take them through the land of Chima where they will meet some of the highly advanced animal tribal habitats, including the Rhino Quarry, Raven’s Roost, Eagle’s Nest, Wolves Encampment, Gorilla Forest and Crocodile Swamp among other imaginative settings.

SpeedorzRenderingThe World of Chima also features a super-charged, super-fast SpeedorzTM Arena where multiple players build their LEGO Speedorz and compete to win the precious supply of CHI by participating in group challenges and competing in a series of obstacles. A new 4D movie, the LEGO Chima 4D Movie Xperience, will further immerse families into The World of Chima by bringing the characters to life on the big screen. Kids will also get to meet their hero Laval the Lion Prince and Cragger the Crocodile King at daily character meet and greet sessions. Plus, with the largest supply of LEGO products in Central Florida, guests can find their favourite LEGO Legends of Chima sets and Speedorz.

While building and developing the World of Chima is good fun, it’s also good business. Since opening in 2011, LEGOLAND Florida has created more than 1,300 new jobs in Central Florida. LEGOLAND Florida’s new World of Chima expansion has already had a positive impact on Florida’s economy by supporting nearly 150 construction jobs, of which 85 percent are from Central Florida. In addition, approximately 50 jobs will be added to LEGOLAND Florida when The World of Chima opens this summer to support the park’s operation of the area.

San Diego, CA, USA — Steven Snyder will take over the leadership of the Fleet Science Center from Jeffrey Kirsch, who is retiring after three decades as the Balboa Park institution’s executive director.

“For 30 years Jeff has been the driving force in moving the Fleet Science Center to become one of the premier science and education centers in the United States. So we as trustees have found it a privilege to partner with him through the years and it will be a bittersweet time for us to ‘say goodbye’,” said Carol Chang, one of the Science Center’s trustees.

“At the same time, we are delighted that we were able to select a rising star, Steve Snyder, who while filling large shoes, comes to the Fleet with an exciting background and much energy to take on this leadership role.”

Snyder most recently served as vice president of exhibit and program development at The Franklin Institute, Philadelphia’s primary science museum.

In a statement released Thursday, the Fleet pointed to Snyder’s contributions in redirecting the 180-year-old organization toward a “more dynamic, relevant, educational-based” focus and developing “new experiences and products to increase attendance and revenue while maintaining the integrity of the organization’s educational mission.”

A graduate of Carnegie Mellon University and Michigan State University (where he earned a Ph.D in physics), Snyder has also served as director of science and director of attraction development at Science City/The Kansas City Museum.

Kirsch has been at the helm of the Fleet during most of its 40 year history and he has been a transformational presence at the flagship, Balboa Park institution and in the community. During his tenure, which officially ends on June 30, the organization doubled its size (when it opened expanded facilities in 1998), quintupled its membership, updated its technological resources and emerged as a strong regional force in science education.

Kirsch also became an international leader in the production and exhibition of IMAX films and chaired the Giant Screen Cinema Association. The Fleet is home to the world’s first IMAX Dome Theater, which Kirsch recently updated with a new screen and a state-of-the-art digital GSX system, essentially giving the theater the capabilities of a digital planetarium.

“When I took on the job on January 1 1983 I never dreamed this was to be my job of a lifetime. But it was,” said Kirsch. “There are challenges, successes, and there are disappointments, but in the end there is the satisfaction of working with people who care about what they do and what they can discover. This is what happens at the Fleet every day and if we can help others make a discovery, which I believe we do, well that is significant. ”

Kirsch will continue working in the IMAX field and maintain his role as consulting producer on a film the Fleet is creating about the Panama Canal. The institution will unveil it as part of the Balboa Park 2015 Celebration, which marks the 100th anniversary of the 1915 Panama-California Exposition in Balboa Park.

Sochi Olympic Mascots Return to Russia to Prepare for 2014 Winter Games

0

857959_10151307112848861_1608546106_oMoscow, Russia (March 19, 2013) /PRWEB/ — An exhibit with the Sochi 2014 Olympic mascots – Polar Bear, Hare and Leopard, has been installed in Manezhnaya Square in Moscow. The mascots arrived in Moscow from London, where they had graced the center of the British capital in Hyde Park on Marble Arch throughout the 2012 Summer Olympic Games. The Sochi 2014 mascots will remain in Moscow until next January, and then in February 2014 they will move to the Olympic Park in Sochi.

Polar Bear, Hare and Leopard began their travels in July 2012 when they went to the Games in London. The Sochi 2014 mascots were seen by thousands of Londoners and visitors to the Olympic city over the three weeks of the competition. The Sochi mascots will stay in Moscow right up to January 2014, and shortly before the Olympic Games (February 2014) they will move to Sochi to be installed in the Olympic Park until the end of the Games.

The appearance of the three Olympic mascots on Manezhnaya Square is likely to attract attention as the installation is approximately 10 meters long and 4 meters high. The bright Sochi 2014 mascots will provide a pleasant surprise for Muscovites and visitors alike. The Sochi 2014 mascots were selected through a live national vote in the Russian National mascot competition on Channel One Russia in 2010.

The Russian National mascot competition for the Olympic and Paralympic Games of 2014 in Sochi was held between 1 September and 5 December 2010. During the competition, the Sochi 2014 Organizing Committee received 24,048 works. The shortlist consisted of 11 mascots: Hare, Dolphin, Polar Bear, Brown Bear, Bullfinch, Leopard, Snowflake, Sun, Small Person, Father Frost and Matryoshka. The final images of the candidates, after they were “brought alive” by animators, were presented February 7, 2011. Over 1.4 million people took part in the final voting, which took place live on Channel One Russia. In its own way it was an “Olympic” record, the first time such a large number of people had voted in a live television show. More information about the contest and the mascots can be found at http://www.talisman.sochi2014.com/en

Leopard

The Leopard, who is a rescuer and mountaineer, lives in the crown of a huge tree which grows on the highest cliff in the snowy mountains of the Caucasus. He is always ready to come to the help of others and more than once he has saved the nearby village from avalanches. The Leopard is an excellent snowboarder, and has taught this sport to all his friends and neighbors. The Leopard has a pleasant disposition; he cannot live alone and he really loves to dance.

Hare

The busiest creature in the winter forest. Her friends are always amazed: just how does she find the time to do so much! For the little doe hare not only studies at the Forest Academy (where she gets excellent grades) and helps her Mum in the family restaurant, “The Forest Dam”, but also takes part in all manner of sporting events. The Hare trusts her friends so much that she doesn’t have any secrets: she simply loves sport. And she also loves to sing and dance.

Polar Bear

Beyond the Arctic Circle on a shelf of ice there lives a polar bear. In his home, everything is made out of ice and snow: his snow shower, his bed, his computer and even his weight-lifting equipment. The Polar Bear was raised by arctic explorers from an early age. It was they who taught him skiing, speed-skating and curling. But above all the polar bear enjoyed riding sports sleighs. He has become a real luger and bobsledder, and his friends, the seals and sea lions, watch his victories with pleasure. Right now they are setting up competitions in these sports, and during the long polar night there is no time to get bored!

DPI Projectors Enable Rural Communities to Experience “Tornado Alley” in 3D

TornadoAlley_image3_thumbAtlanta, GA, USA (March 18, 2013) /PRWEB/ — Giant Screen Films and D3D Cinema are on a mission to educate. This is not your typical scholarly pursuit, however, as their goal involves traveling to remote regions and helping to empower and inspire young people in communities affected by a tornado’s destructive power. Luckily, this group brings extraordinary tools to the task at hand, including a nationally-recognized storm-chasing specialist, some of the world’s leading tornado researchers, steel-clad custom weather vehicles and a 10,000 lumen, remarkably rugged DPI projector.

The project is supported by a National Science Foundation grant, awarded to produce a film titled Tornado Alley. The documentary features filmmaker Sean Casey, star of the television series Storm Chasers, and the researchers of VORTEX2, the most ambitious tornado research mission ever undertaken, in their attempts to collect footage and unprecedented data from the heart of a tornado. Enlisting a mobile Doppler radar station, a number of custom-built vehicular juggernauts fortified to withstand remarkable winds and debris, and custom-created weather measurement devices, the group patrols the traditional ‘tornado alley’ of the central U.S. in search of the perfect storm.

More than simply a thrill-seeking pursuit, the captivating chases depicted in the film are critical attempts to discover the dynamics and the habits of such an extreme weather system—secrets that could improve warnings and save lives. After all, the goal of the film is to help audiences understand and appreciate the nature of severe weather and the work of storm chasing scientists. But in developing the film and its educational outreach, producers at Giant Screen Films realized that there was a distinctly human side to the story that needed further attention.

Tornado Alley was produced for and exhibited in large-screen, permanent theaters found in the science centers and museums of metropolitan cities. Basically, in the exact opposite environments of where tornadoes are actually present. These museum partners have the resources and expertise to build on the film’s content, planning special programs, hosting scientists, and creating meaningful learning experiences. But the project team recognized that the communities most affected by severe weather—and perhaps the best places to inspire future generations of scientists—were largely rural, remote, and lacking informal learning environments like science museums. The production team decided to propose an innovating outreach strategy to the National Science Foundation: using a traveling digital 3D projector, the project would deliver the Tornado Alley experience to communities across the heartland.

In late 2011, the NSF-funded Tornado Alley outreach program began visiting remote regions throughout the central U.S. The American Red Cross and FEMA have also helped bring their expertise in safety and preparedness to this program, while other partners including the United Way, Boys and Girls Clubs, and the Missouri Mathematics and Science Coalition have helped identify communities interested in hosting the team. Deborah Raksany, vice president of development and partnerships at Giant Screen Films, explained, “The goal of the outreach program is to create an immersive theater experience, and an intimate, in-person learning experience, in communities that lack traditional educational resources.” Raksany continued, “We hope that the opportunity to connect with people who are passionate about understanding severe weather gives these communities a forum to explore their experiences, and perhaps provides the inspiration for some young people to join the research efforts that will save lives in the future.”

The mobile experience includes one of the fortified vehicles, advanced weather measurement devices, key personnel from the film and a staging-grade TITAN dual-lamp 1080p 3D projector from Digital Projection International (DPI). During these presentations, an abbreviated version of the 3D film is shown, followed by insight and discussion. “At sites that are underserved or in the process of recovery from a weather event, traditional classroom tools—let alone a film projector—are resources that can’t be taken for granted. In those cases, a 3D film is a special addition to the experience,” explained Raksany. Attendees also get hands-on interaction with the mobile Doppler studio and fortified vehicle.

Scott Fauteux, senior operations and support manager for D3D Cinema, is tasked with setting up a functional screening environment in every new location, regardless of the environment and lack of resources available. “DPI’s TITAN projector was chosen for its high brightness, rugged design and compatibility with all types of 3D.” The fact that the TITAN runs on 110v power also expands the flexibility and durability inherent in the display. “Thanks to the TITAN’s brightness, I’ve turned warehouses, outdoor spaces, and even the sides of buildings into functional viewing spaces.” Raksany elaborated on Fauteux’s comments, stating, “The nature of ‘cinema’ is changing rapidly, and we’re excited to realize that it’s now possible to deliver an immersive, inspiring experience almost anywhere with the right tools.”

With support from the National Science Foundation and a network of community partners, the project has held events across the heartland, with screenings at a diversity of venues, from schools and community centers to warehouses and home improvement stores, What each event has in common is the opportunity for learning, exchange, and in some cases, healing. Brian Crouse, executive director of the Missouri Mathematics and Science Coalition and vice president of education for the Missouri Chamber of Commerce, explained, “In places like Joplin, the story doesn’t end with the tornado that ravaged the city. People are rebuilding and strengthening the community in ways we couldn’t have imagined. Programs like the Tornado Alley outreach campaign, that bring inspiration and much-needed learning experiences to our young people, are a meaningful part of that recovery.”
