Thailand seeks formal recognition by BIE for Horticultural Expo 2029 Korat

The Government of Thailand has formally requested that the Bureau International des Expositions (BIE) grant Recognition to its project to organize Horticultural Expo 2029 Korat.

The request for recognition was addressed to the Secretary General of the BIE, Dimitri S. Kerkentzes, and delivered by the Ambassador of Thailand to France, H.E. Nikorndej Balankura.

Thailand plans to hold Horticultural Expo 2029 in the city of Nakhon Ratchasima, also known as Korat, between November 10, 2029 and February 28, 2030. The proposed theme of the Expo is “Nature and Greenery, Envisioning the Green Future.” The Expo project has been approved as an A1 International Horticultural Expo by the International Association of Horticultural Producers (AIPH), the federation that certifies horticultural exhibitions.

The request for Recognition is being submitted together with the Recognition Dossier, a comprehensive plan for the implementation of the Expo. The dossier includes legislative and financial measures, the Expo site Master Plan, conditions for international participation and legacy plans. It will be examined closely by the BIE Secretariat and BIE Member States. The Executive Committee of the BIE will then review the request and decide whether to forward the proposal to the BIE General Assembly for official Recognition. Once Recognition is granted, the host country may begin preparations in earnest and formally invite participating countries through diplomatic channels.

Commenting on the request, Kerkentzes said, “The BIE is pleased to receive this request for Recognition from the Kingdom of Thailand to organize Horticultural Expo 2029. In recent years, Horticultural Expos have grown significantly in scope, and I look forward to seeing how Thailand intends to invite the world to create a greener future for all.”

Thailand is a regular participant in Expos organized under BIE auspices and has been a Member State of the Organization since 1993. Thailand previously hosted a Horticultural Expo in 2006/7 – Royal Flora Ratchapruek – in Chiang Mai, welcoming 3.8 million visitors.

Horticultural Expos have been recognized by the BIE since 1960. They aim to foster cooperation and the sharing of knowledge and solutions between countries, horticultural producers and agricultural industry by addressing the paramount issues of healthy lifestyles, green economies, sustainable living, education and innovation.

The most recent Horticultural Expo, Expo 2023 Doha, took place in Doha, Qatar, between October 2, 2023 and March 28, 2024 under the theme “Green Desert, Better Environment.” The next Horticultural Expo, Expo 2027 Yokohama, will take place in Yokohama, Japan, from March 19 to September 26, 2027, under the theme “Scenery of the Future for Happiness.”
