2023 marked the centennial celebration for the historic and iconic Winchester Mystery House in San Jose, Calif. To commemorate, a new installation was introduced to enhance the beauty of the Grand Ballroom’s stained-glass windows.

When the Winchester Mystery House decided to embark on adding new detail for their famed tours, they turned to Winslow Studio, an experiential design studio specializing in the creation of immersive experiences that blend traditional craftsmanship with cutting-edge technology.

For this installation, the Winslow Studio team focused on historical preservation and bringing a piece of history back to life without impacting the original design or infrastructure. “When taking on projects like this one, we look at how we can use technology in a way that will preserve and restore the original space – something we like to call ‘augmented restoration,’” said Craig Winslow. “Our goal is to ensure the natural elements of the space are enhanced without taking from the history.”

Winslow utilized rear projection mapping with the Epson PowerLite® 810E Extreme Short Throw projector to create a stunning display of light and imagery, breathing new life into the space.

“We’ve been really interested pushing ultra short throw in different ways after using them for a handful of projects recently,” said Winslow. “This was an ideal opportunity to put the PowerLite 810E to use for an augmented restoration project. Sitting just inches from the window, the projector offers sharp, bright images in a tight space and enhanced the stained-glass in a magical way.”

To ensure the installation blended seamlessly with the historical integrity of the ballroom, projectors were strategically placed outside and above each window. This approach minimized any visual disruption while maximizing the impact of the projections.

The technical equipment used included Epson extreme short throw projectors, Brightsign media players for programming and scheduling, an intuitive wall button interface for easy operation, and TouchOSC for remote control by senior team members.

The Grand Ballroom Illumination showcases the hidden beauty of the stained-glass windows and simulates various lighting effects, including daylight, sunset, twilight, and full brightness. This feature allows visitors to capture captivating photos and enjoy seasonal experiences.

“We are thrilled to have partnered with Winslow Studio to help unveil this enchanting light installation behind our historic stained-glass windows,” said Walter Magnuson, executive director of Winchester Mystery House. “This project is truly breathing life back into the intricate designs of the iconic Grand Ballroom.”

This installation brings new life to a space that has rarely experienced direct natural light, as the east-facing windows and the ballroom’s exterior are situated beneath the floor above. Winslow adds, “With the Epson projectors, we were able to bring the ‘sunlight’ needed to highlight the beauty of these windows and allow them to live up to their full potential. This was something that had never truly been done before.”

The partnership between Winslow Studio and the Winchester Mystery House created a magical and immersive experience that honors the rich history and captivating allure of Sarah Winchester’s enigmatic home and shows what can be done when using the technology of today to restore a piece of history.
