Dataton drives ‘Exploration Space’ for Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex

0

Eleven-screen multi-projection show depends on WATCHOUT™ for impact

Linköping, Sweden, 19 May 2011: The first exhibit at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex to examine the near future of space exploration, ‘Exploration Space:Explorers Wanted’ is a stunning addition to one of America’s most enthralling and best-loved visitor attractions. Combining live theatre, interactive exhibits and new media components, the area was designed by BRC Imagination Arts, Inc, in collaboration with the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex and Delaware North Co. Parks & Resorts, the Visitor Complex’s commercial partner.

The exhibit audio visual systems were designed and installed by Electrosonic. They include a giant 12ft x 8ft portal looking out onto a rear-projection screen that displays enormous images of future destinations like the moon, Mars and nebulas for the introductory exhibit, ‘Your Destination’. A flat-screen LCD display titled ‘On The Shoulders Of Giants’ showcases the next generation of spacecraft. Five large 12ft x 15ft trapezoidal exhibit screens immerse the guests in the future of space travel. Six more screens of various shapes and sizes, including a 14ft wide 16:9 screen a 12ft diameter screen and four trapezoidal screens, support the main show ‘Explorers Wanted’.

Twice every hour, the entire exhibit is transformed into a live immersive show environment for a 12-minute dynamic, presentation called ‘Explorers Wanted’, in which a NASA ‘Communicator’ walks guests through new missions, new discoveries and the immense challenges of space exploration.

“During the show, visitors sit on bench seats, surrounded by digital imagery, as the Communicator inspires the audience to become part of a NASA mission and the future of space exploration,” says Tom Brighton, Media Support Specialist, Electrosonic. “The main show is displayed on a series of fixed, geometrically shaped screens. The primary content is shown on a large 14ft wide center screen and a secondary 12ft diameter circular screen, stage right. Two additional projectors display content on four trapezoidal screens, which grow progressively larger in size as they arc over the top of the center screen.”

The exhibit and show are run by a Medialon Manager control system with content served by ten WATCHOUT players feeding nine projectors and one monitor. Electrosonic took advantage of WATCHOUT’s inherent programmability to ensure that seven of the projectors could display content onto the nine trapezoidal screens without images bleeding onto the wall. They also created a custom user interface for the WATCHOUT master PC controller so that staff can add updated content to the pre-programmed show to keep it fresh and relevant – a key customer requirement.

“The fact that all the screens are odd shapes and sizes makes the show very visually striking, but did present technical challenges,” Brighton reflects. “Fortunately WATCHOUT is not phased by such things and proved itself capable of performing pretty much any task we could throw at it.”

Fredrik Svahnberg, Marketing Manager, Dataton, concludes: “We love projects that push WATCHOUT to new limits and the ‘Explorers Wanted’ show at Exploration Space certainly does that. The result is an immersive audiovisual experience that educates as well as tells a thrilling story of potential, not just of the future of space exploration, but also of each individual visitor. We are extremely proud to have been able to help bring this project to fruition in such a technically and creatively satisfying way.”

Philadelphia: Liberty Bell Now Shines More Brightly Thanks To LED Lighting By MSi

0

Deerfield Beach, Florida, USA (PRWEB) — Recently the National Park Service made the decision to install over 2700 MSi iPAR 38 LED lights to illuminate the Liberty Bell located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In 2003 the bell was moved into the new Liberty Bell Center, a glass and steel pavilion that allows it to be viewed by the public 24 hours a day, seven days a week. This new setting is perfectly suited for the kind of efficient, bright and long burning light provided by LEDs.

Cast with the lettering “Proclaim liberty throughout all the land unto all the inhabitants thereof,” this 2,000 lb. bell has stood as a symbol of American freedom for over 200 years. The National Park Service moved the Liberty Bell to its new home to allow easier viewing by the many visitors who come to see it each year. A special feature of the Liberty Bell Center is glass walls providing viewing of the bell both day and night. This is the ideal setting for LEDs that offer many advantages over traditional tungsten lights that had been previously used.

“First let me say how proud we are to be lighting the Liberty Bell,” said Bruce Johnson, MSi managing partner. “It is a great honor, but it is also a perfect place to show the many bonuses offered by our LED lights.”

LEDs offer many advantages over the tungsten halogen lamps traditionally found lighting important artifacts – chief among them are cost savings in energy and maintenance. LED lights consume far less energy and produce almost no heat meaning reduced cost for both electricity and cooling. Exhibit spaces will also realize savings in the costs of lamp replacement and the manpower that requires. In the situation found at the Liberty Bell Center the typical tungsten halogen light burning day and night will typically need replacement every two months. The equivalent LED light burning 24 hours a day will last up to 7 years.

Another big advantage to using MSi LEDs to light important artifacts is preservation. Many materials can suffer damage and fading as a result of long term exposure to the ultraviolet and infrared light waves that are produced by tungsten halogen lighting. The light emitted by LED’s contains neither of these harmful wavelengths that can result in damage to priceless historic artifacts.

“The color rendering index of our newest LED’s now meet or exceed that of the traditional tungsten halogen lighting,” added Johnson. “That means that museums and exhibit spaces like the Liberty Bell Center can now realize all the cost savings and preservation benefits of LED lighting and allow visitors to view objects and colors the way they were intended to be seen.”

About the company
Founded in 2000, MSi is dedicated to the design, development and manufacturing of application specific solid-state lighting products. With warehouse and distribution facilities in California and Florida, multiple site drop shipment requirements are facilitated on a complete and on-time cost efficient basis.

Cognizant of the rapidly changing developments and improvements of high performance white LED products, MSi maintains a strong ongoing relationship with CREE, a leading manufacturer of LED components. Product design, engineering, testing and rapid prototyping at their Florida headquarters provides the ability to develop and test products for quality and performance, allowing speed to market for specific application demands.

Great Wolf Lodge Recognized For Water Safety Excellence During National Water Safety Month

0

MADISON, Wis., May 19, 2011 /PRNewswire/ — In time for the upcoming Memorial Day weekend, which marks the start of the summer travel season, Great Wolf Resorts, Inc. ® (NASDAQ: WOLF), North America’s largest family of indoor waterpark resorts, has received accolades for exceeding industry standards in water safety from Ellis & Associates, Inc., an industry-leading organization specializing in aquatics safety and risk management.

While all of the company’s 11 Great Wolf Lodge® locations received recognition for their aquatics safety programs, three received elite honors by achieving “Platinum” status: Great Wolf Lodge – Williamsburg, Virginia; Great Wolf Lodge – Grand Mound, Washington; Great Wolf Lodge – Grapevine, Texas. In addition, three Great Wolf Lodge lifeguards were recognized as Ellis & Associates Golden Guards for the first quarter of 2011: Kathy Bickle and Heather O’Camb from Great Wolf Lodge – Grand Mound, as well as Kelly Brannum from Great Wolf Lodge – Grapevine. Only eight individuals were named for this nationwide honor, which recognizes lifeguards who embody ideal qualifications.

“This great recognition reflects our team’s commitment and understanding that fun and safety both play big roles in creating lifelong memories,” said Franceen Gonzales, vice president of aquatics and risk management for Great Wolf Resorts and former chairperson of the World Waterpark Association. “We are dedicated to helping children of all ages establish a healthy respect for water in a fun and memorable way.”

With May being recognized as National Water Safety Month, which was established by the World Waterpark Association, the Association of Pool & Spa Professionals, and the National Recreation & Park Association, Gonzales points to tips from the annual campaign designed to educate the public about the importance of being “water aware.”

“Statistics say that more than one in four fatal drowning victims are children under the age of 14, and it’s upsetting to think that the vast majority of those could have been prevented,” continued Gonzales. “Our greatest allies in this effort are parents and role models who are willing to be our safety partners by reinforcing a few simple, but important guidelines.”

Play Safe Water Safety Tips, from Great Wolf Lodge:

  • If your child is in the water, you should be, too. Interact with children while in the water, especially with weak or non-swimming children. This not only increases safety, but it’s also great exercise and creates wonderful family memories.
  • Make sure young children and non-swimmers wear Coast Guard-approved life jackets, fastened properly. Inflatable rafts, swim “floaties,” and other inflatable devices are not appropriate life-saving devices.
  • Teach kids how to swim by enrolling them in swim lessons. These lessons teach the basics of water safety and awareness, and kids will learn a valuable life-skill while gaining confidence. Check with a local YMCA, Red Cross, parks department, or school district to see if they offer lessons.
  • Stay hydrated and be sure to take regular breaks out of the water to stay alert and avoid fatigue. This is especially important if it is hot or humid, and includes indoor waterparks such as Great Wolf Lodge.
  • Try to swim where there are trained lifeguards on duty, but remember, parents still need to take responsibility for their children in the water. Lifeguards are trained to monitor the water and react to rescue situations – they are not babysitters or a substitute for parent participation.

Blockbuster 3-D-CGI Feature “Despicable Me” to Become Attraction Experience at Universal Orlando

Plus, Incredible High-Tech Enhancements Underway for One of the World’s Most Popular Attractions: The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man

Orlando, Fla. (May 19, 2011) – Universal Orlando Resort today announced that its newest attraction will be based on Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment’s blockbuster 3-D-CGI feature “Despicable Me,” bringing minions, mayhem and a whole new level of 3-D family fun to its guests. The “Despicable Me” experience will replace the Jimmy Neutron attraction at Universal Studios Florida.

Universal also announced that The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man, one of the greatest attractions in theme park history, will be completely reanimated in 4K digital high definition – once again redefining the theme park experience.

Both will open in 2012 and are being developed by the same award-winning Universal Creative team that has brought all of Universal Orlando’s spectacularly themed attractions to life. Both will utilize brand-new, highly sophisticated Infitec 3-D projection systems designed to make the experience sharper, clearer and more “real” than ever before.

DESPICABLE ME
With a worldwide gross of more than $540 million, 2010’s “Despicable Me,” from directors Chris Renaud & Pierre Coffin, is the sixth most successful film that Universal Pictures has ever distributed. It is now the 10th-biggest animated film in U.S. history. The 3-D animated adventure thrilled audiences across the globe with its outrageous humor, endearing characters and compelling storyline – all of which guests will be able to experience exclusively at Universal Orlando in 2012.

“Despicable Me” will become the first-ever Universal animated film to be transformed into a theme park experience. The Universal Creative team is working closely with producer Chris Meledandri, the founder of Illumination Entertainment, to create all-new animation for an all-new “Despicable Me” adventure that places guests right in the center of the action.

Gru, one of the world’s greatest super-villains, is bringing his high-tech empire – and his three adopted daughters – to Universal Studios, and he is looking for all the help he can get. First, he will transform guests into an army of mischievous, scene-stealing minions. Then he will train them. And that kicks off an unforgettable ride experience that creates a hysterical mix of chaos and family fun.

Guests will:

  • Laugh as they embark on an entirely-new, high-tech 3-D digital adventure with their favorite characters from the film – Gru, daughters Margo, Edith and Agnes, and of course, Gru’s not-so-bright pit crew, the minions
  • Marvel as they explore Gru’s lair and descend into his secret lab
  • Shriek as the entire family is transformed into minions
  • Celebrate as they are swept into a first-ever, minion-inspired, interactive dance party where they can show off their best moves

“The ‘Despicable Me’ attraction is the latest example of how we tap into pop culture’s most compelling stories and turn them into extraordinary theme park entertainment,” said Mark Woodbury, president of Universal Creative. “This is a perfect fit for Universal Orlando, and we can’t wait to bring this one-of-a-kind experience to life.”

“As we write, design and animate our films at Illumination, it is our singular goal to bring to life endearing and, hopefully, enduring characters,” said Chris Meledandri. “With the creation of next year’s ‘Despicable Me’ attraction at Universal Orlando, audiences will be able to immerse themselves in Gru’s world for many years to come.”

THE AMAZING ADVENTURES OF SPIDER-MAN
Already one of the most popular and innovative theme park attractions ever created, The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man at Universal’s Islands of Adventure continues to raise the bar for theme park entertainment – combining advanced motion-based ride vehicles, 3-D digital film and live special effects to create an unparalleled ride experience. It is widely acknowledged as one of the best theme park experiences in the world – and it’s about to get mind-blowingly better.

The newly reanimated, high-definition experience will unfold within the attraction’s towering visual spaces – taking on even larger than larger-than-life proportions. The new digital animation – combined with the new Infitec system and new set enhancements – will transform what is already one of the most technologically advanced attractions ever created into what will feel like an all-new experience.

Facts about the enhanced ride experience:

  • All-new digital animation done in 4K high definition – the highest HD resolution available
  • The new HD animation will allow guests to experience details they’ve never been able to before – from the flames spewing from Hobgoblin’s pumpkins to the electricity arching through Electro’s body to the stitching on Spider-Man’s gloves.
  • To take advantage of new HD clarity and detail, Universal Orlando is adding entirely new details to the film – and leaving it up to guests to find them.

“Guests will not believe their eyes when they experience the new Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man,” said Thierry Coup, senior vice president of the Universal Creative Studio. “We are talking about a larger-than-life environment and the HD animation will make it even more remarkable than it has been. It will seem brand-new.”

Universal Orlando Resort
Universal Orlando Resort is a completely separate destination featuring two theme parks, three magnificently themed on-site hotels and a nighttime entertainment complex. Guests can soar above Hogwarts with Harry Potter, swing above the streets with Spider-Man, battle aliens alongside Agent J, and help Shrek save Princess Fiona in Shrek 4-D.

12, 2012. The 6th FullDome Festival again will include full-length feature shows produced since 2009. The traditional Students Night will take place on Friday, May 11 and the Festival Gala on May 12, 2012.

‘The organizers of the FullDome Festival like to thank all who have submitted to the FullDome Festival. All contributions from students, independent artists and professionals deserve credits. Our sincere thanks to all lecturers and experienced students who helped tremendously to encourage and support students in their first approach to the fulldome medium. Our thanks goes as well to the many visitors of the three days’ Festival, some of them came all the way from Japan, the United States, Brazil and many European countries. We hope you all enjoyed the Festival as we did.’
