Amsterdam, The Netherlands — Cruden, one of the world’s leading professional motion simulation companies, will make a virtual splash at the IAAPA Attractions Expo in Orlando (November 18th-22nd 2013) by inviting visitors to take the helm of its new powerboat simulator.
The Amsterdam-based world leader in professional-grade full motion simulation is adding to its traditional motorsport simulator offer and teasing visitors to its booth (no. 1051) with interactive drive and ride simulator ideas ranging from speed boats and rafts to motorcycles and helicopters.
Guests will be able to climb aboard a Hexatech 3CTR (three-seater) simulator and launch themselves into the water in a dual engine P1 powerboat or a fast interceptor military vessel, carefully modeled by Cruden’s vehicle dynamics engineers. This is the first Cruden simulator to offer interaction for three guests at once. The guest to the right of the driver controls the throttle; the person on the left is the navigator. Depending on customer requirement, the simulator can be switched to race car mode, providing a most versatile, modern attraction. The powerboat simulator is a more affordable way for attractions owners to specify a Cruden simulator; requiring fewer degrees of motion than a racing simulator, the basic 2-DOF simulator will cost around €85,000 (ex. works).
“This year, IAPPA is all about demonstrating Cruden’s intention as a serious simulator technology leader in the attractions sector, and in a number of imaginable experience settings. The sophistication of our simulators is already appreciated by race engineers for vehicle development; now we will help the market understand what that means for water or air craft and for interactive experiences incorporating multiple guest inputs, such as powerboat racing or wild water rafting,” says Frank Kalff, commercial director of Cruden.
“We have observed that of the many power- or speedboat simulators on the market, none really provide a representative feeling of speed and force feedback. We have spent hours with the Dutch military on its fast interceptor vessels and security boats to get the motion just right.”
The powerboat simulator is available with a powerboat body.
WhiteWater was the recipient of two prestigious awards presented at the annual World Waterpark Association (WWA) conference, recently held in West Palm Beach, Florida. The WWA 2013 Leading Edge Award was given to WhiteWater for the Family Boomerango(TM) + Manta(TM) combination attraction now open at Japan’s Nagashima Resort. The award is presented to park and supplier members who, through their combined efforts, have brought a project, product, service or program to fruition, thereby creating industry innovation and leadership.
In addition, WhiteWater won “Best of Show” for its booth at the WWA trade show.
In receiving the Leading Edge award, WhiteWater President and CEO, Geoff Chutter recognized Nagashima Resort and Kuritaz Water Industries Ltd. as visionaries in their collaboration to develop this groundbreaking attraction. “We are beyond thrilled with the success of this project for Nagashima Resort and proud of our continuing relationship,” he remarked. “And as WhiteWater stands for innovation in everything we do, winning ‘Best of Show’ for our booth at WWA is super gratifying,” he added.
These awards follow an award given at the EAS show in Paris where WhiteWater’s original Family Rattler(TM) at Aqua-Lazika, Anakila City Resort in Georgia, earned the European Star Award as “Europe’s Best Waterslide.” The award, presented by Kirmes & Park Revue, is determined by an international and independent trade jury. It recognizes the most remarkable attractions in Europe, bringing attention to entrepreneurial courage and innovation. “This is a wonderful honor not only for WhiteWater and our Family Rattler,” said Chutter, “it’s fantastic recognition for Aqua-Lazika and Georgia.”

Houston, TX, USA /BUSINESS WIRE/– Officials with Space Center Houston, the visitor center for NASA’s Johnson Space Center (NASA-JSC), today announced the winning entry in the “Name the Shuttle” contest during a public christening ceremony. The full-scale Space Shuttle replica will now be known as “Independence,” a name that fittingly symbolizes the spirit of Texas and its unique characteristics. The replica will eventually sit atop the massive 747 Shuttle Carrier Aircraft (SCA) as part of a new $12 million, six-story attraction currently under development.
“We received a total of 10,263 entries from all across Texas, and our elite panel of judges sorted through a widespread collection of possibilities,” said Richard Allen, president of Space Center Houston. “It was a tough decision, but we ultimately chose a name that celebrates the Lone Star State and highlights its distinct contribution to America’s Space Shuttle Program.”
The winner, Tim Judd of Kingwood, was present for the unveiling ceremony and helped reveal the new moniker. Judd, 29, will have his name and hometown incorporated onto a placard at the exhibit, once construction is completed. He was also awarded a multi-day trip for four to Space Center Houston, which includes a VIP tour of the facility, a behind-the-scenes experience at NASA-JSC, hotel accommodations, meals and travel compensation.
“When I first heard about the ‘Name the Shuttle’ contest, ‘Independence’ was the first thought to pop into my mind,” Judd said. “This concept is important, not just to the State of Texas, but to all Americans. We enjoy freedom every day, constantly striving for a greater sense of independence. It was that exact mindset that brought the settlers here in the first place and what drives explorers into space today.”
The state-of-the-art Space Shuttle attraction is slated to open in 2015 and will be unique to Space Center Houston. It will be the only place in the world where guests can climb aboard the Shuttle Carrier Aircraft and the Shuttle replica to experience the 30-year Space Shuttle program in the most dynamic, hands-on environment imaginable.
“The Shuttle was a fantastic spacecraft. Visitors from around the world will have the unparalleled opportunity to explore this vehicle through the eyes of an astronaut, creating a truly unique Shuttle experience,” said Chris Ferguson, STS-135 shuttle commander, who spoke at the event. “Space Center Houston will be the only place in the world where visitors will be able to see the Shuttle ‘piggyback’ on one of the authentic carrier airplanes. It’s most fitting that this magnificent combination will live its second career as a learning tool, inspiring generations to come.”
Thanks to the generosity of BRC Imagination Art’s Bob Rogers, InPark Editor Martin Palicki was invited to attend the annual fundraiser “An Affair of the Art” for Ryman Arts. Held at the home of Marty and Leah Sklar, the evening consisted o two portions. The first featured presentations by designers Chip Foose, Pixar’s Bill Cone, Walt Disney Imagineering writer Kevin Rafferty, illustrator Chris Turner and rockwork designer Zsolt Hormay on the various roles they each played in bringing Cars Land to life. Imagineer Kathy Mangum, Executive Producer of Cars Land, served as hostess for the presentations and Q&A sessions.
Following the presentations, a large assortment of art was placed on sale, with all proceeds going to benefit Ryman Arts. Artwork included everything from sculptural pieces, glassowork, paintings, sketches and more. Student artists continued to contribute to the art collection on display by sketching live models, sculpting figures, and creating murals.
The Disney designers also worked on items referencing Cars Land that were also sold to raise funds.
Artwork from the late Herb Ryman was some of the first pieces to sell, and work from other Disney legends, such as Bob Gurr, were in high demand.
The event attracted many Disney Imagineers and themed entertainment professionals. Volunteers from organizations such as TEA helped staff the event.
The evening ended with Bob Rogers showing off Marty Sklar’s office, a treasure trove of Disney memorabilia and a lifetime of achievements.
Special thanks to Bob Rogers, Ryman Arts, and Marty & Leah Skar for bringing InPark to such a wonderful event. Photos courtesy of Ryman Arts.
Hong Kong (October 7, 2013) — Disney Parks Chairman Tom Staggs today announced a new attraction – The Iron Man Experience – for Hong Kong Disneyland’s Tomorrowland. The new attraction will feature a next-gen simulator ride based on Star Tours technology and a Stark Expo featuring a larger clone of Disneyland’s Hall of Armor, along with other attractions.
Inside The Magic posted an advance copy of Staggs’ statement about the new attraction on the Disney Parks Blog:
As I’ve often said, one of the greatest things about Disney is the treasure trove of characters and rich stories we have to draw upon for the immersive experiences we provide our guests around the world. With Marvel joining the Disney family in 2009, our character and story base grew even further, and the anticipation for how Marvel comes to life in our parks and resorts continues to energize our guests and Cast.
That’s why it was so exciting earlier today at Hong Kong Disneyland to announce that the very first Disney attraction based on a Marvel character experience will debut in Hong Kong Disneyland. And I’m excited to be able to share some of the initial details with you today about this Iron Man Experience.
Audiences around the world have been captivated by the amazing inventions and innovations of Tony Stark and we’re basing this experience within a piece of the Stark Expo. Located in Tomorrowland at Hong Kong Disneyland, the Expo will allow guests to see firsthand the progression of Tony’s Iron Man suits and many other Stark innovations.
Upon entering the ride vehicle our guests will be able to take flight with Iron Man on an epic adventure that not surprisingly pits Iron Man, and our guests, against the forces of evil. This adventure will take place in the streets and skies of Hong Kong, which will make an even more unique and special experience for our Hong Kong Disneyland guests. In addition, guests will be able to meet and take photos with Iron Man.
It’s obviously no secret that Marvel’s Iron Man movies are immensely popular, and we expect this experience will emulate the success of our most recent expansion – Toy Story Land, Grizzly Gulch and Mystic Point – all of which have been huge hits with our guests.
We are extremely confident in and committed to the continued growth and success of Hong Kong Disneyland. I’m excited to see Iron Man become a part of that success when we welcome guests to the attraction in late 2016.
The New York Times reports: The Iron Man Experience, which analysts say will cost at least $100 million, will be Disney’s first ride based on Marvel. Disney bought the comic book company for about $4 billion in 2009.

In Asia, the theme park industry continues to make progress. For instance, Legoland built a new home in Malaysia. In 2016, 20th Century Fox Theme Park will open and Shanghai Disneyland will be completed. In addition, Guangdong Chimelong Group Co., Ltd. has invested 20 billion Yuan to build a large resort & theme park in Zhuhai, Guangdong Province. From Malaysia to the Middle East and Seoul to Shanghai, an ever-growing number of new theme parks, resorts and entertainment venues have sprung up, and will be open to visitors within five years.
Do these and other developments create opportunities or challenges for us? Facing investment and exploitation boom, we will also subsequently see flourishing development in product design, landscape design, animation production, amusement equipment, intelligent management service and other fields related to theme park construction. How should investors, brand owners, equipment and service providers seize cooperation opportunities and find a right way to the markets? It is a matter of courage and astuteness.
Under these circumstances, Asia Theme Park Development Forum 2013 will kick off concurrently with G&A. We will invite contractors, equipment providers, experts, analysts, architects and other professionals from tourism companies, design agencies, financial institutions, government organs and other organizations. During the forum, participants will be gathered to share the latest information, exchange experiences, discuss issues from different perspectives and seek consensus as well as development opportunities.
