Kennedy Space Center Announces New Tour With Rare Visit to Launch Control Center

Cape Canaveral, FL, (June 8, 2012) /PRNewswire/ — KENNEDY SPACE CENTER — For the first time in more than 30 years, NASA is allowing Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex guests inside the Launch Control Center – where NASA directors and engineers supervised all of the 152 launches for the space shuttle and Apollo programs.

The KSC Up-Close: Launch Control Center (LCC) Tour, the second in Kennedy Space Center’s special 50th anniversary series of rare-access tours, takes visitors inside Firing Room 4, one of the LCC’s four firing rooms and the one from which all 21 space shuttle launches since 2006 were controlled.

Inside Firing Room 4, visitors will pass by the computer consoles at which engineers monitored the computerized launch control system’s thousands of system checks every minute leading up to launch. They’ll see the main launch countdown clock and many large video monitors on the walls, and enter the “bubble room,” with its wall of interior windows through which the Kennedy Space Center management team viewed all of the proceedings below.

“Go” or “No Go”

The most important person in Firing Room 4 was the launch director, who oversaw the entire process and made the final call on whether a launch was a “Go” or “No go.”

“With so much on the line, the people who worked in this room were under tremendous pressure not only in daily operations but particularly as the countdown proceeded,” said Bob Sieck, former launch director,Kennedy Space Center. “They had to handle the tension and their emotions as the tests became faster, the astronauts took their place in the shuttle and thousands of people and news media were gathered outside to watch the launch.”

The LCC Tour opens June 15 and will run through the end of 2012 with a limited number of daily tours. NASA and the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex recently extended another behind-the-scenes tour through the end of the year. That tour, which began in November, takes visitors inside the 525-foot-tall Vehicle Assembly Building (VAB), the massive building adjacent to the LCC where the Apollo Saturn V rockets and space shuttles were assembled.

As with the VAB, visitors have not had access to the LCC since the 1970s, during the period after the Apollo and Skylab programs ended and before the first space shuttle launch in 1981.

“This is another very rare opportunity that NASA has worked with us to provide – access to the Launch Control Center,” said Bill Moore, chief operating officer of Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex. “It might be another 30 years before guests will receive a behind-the-scenes opportunity like this again.”

The LCC will continue to operate in guiding the next generation of rocket launches from Kennedy Space Center for NASA and potentially for commercial space programs. Future launches of SpaceX, whose recent launch from nearby Cape Canaveral Air Force Station resulted in the first mission by a commercial company to travel to and dock with the International Space Station, could take place from Kennedy Space Center beginning in 2013.

The LCC Tour is led by a trained space expert, giving visitors an insider’s view of the space program from launch preparation to liftoff. The tour also includes drive-by views of Launch Pad 39 and culminates at the Apollo/Saturn V Center, where visitors can resume the regular tour. Price is $25 for adults and $19 for children ages 3-11 plus tax, in addition to admission.

The tour will also showcase the LCC’s lobby, which features 152 wall plaques – one for every mission guided there since the first, the unmanned Apollo 4 in 1967. Included are the manned Apollo moon missions, the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project in 1975, the Saturn V launches for Skylab in the mid-1970s, and the launches for the 30-year Space Shuttle Program.

The LCC is also listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places and won an architectural award for industrial design from the American Institute of Architecture in 1965. The lead architect, Martin Stein, said the building’s prominent windows overlooking the launch pads of Launch Complex 39, where all of the shuttles and Saturn V rockets were launched, made a statement as windows “through which you could see mankind’s future.”

In celebration of Kennedy Space Center’s 50th anniversary, Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex is offering guests two special offers that can save up to 30 percent on admission, food and merchandise, as well as secure access to view rocket launches. Details of Kennedy Space Center’s 50th Gold Admission Package and a $50 Annual Pass are available at http://kennedyspacecenter.com/annual-pass-offer.aspx.

From the earliest days of America’s storied space program, Kennedy Space Center has captured the world’s attention and fed its imagination as the epicenter of mankind’s greatest adventure. Its remarkable collection of rockets, launch pads, NASA aerospace technology components and rocket launch viewing opportunities offer authenticity and access unlike any other Central Florida destination.

Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex features many attractions and year-round interactive programs, including meeting real astronauts. The regular bus tour, included with admission, explores the history of the Apollo moon and space shuttle programs with panoramic views of launch pads and the VAB’s exterior and stops at the LC-39 Observation Gantry and the Apollo/Saturn V Center, where visitors see a fully restored, 363-foot Saturn V moon rocket and relive the historic Apollo missions that saw man land on the moon.

Other Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex attractions and activities include Shuttle Launch Experience, an incredible simulated journey of vertically launching into space and orbiting Earth aboard the space shuttle, as well as the Astronaut Training Experience ® (ATX®), Rocket Garden, two IMAX®theaters, Astronaut Encounter, Lunch With an Astronaut, U.S. Astronaut Hall of Fame®, Exploration Space: Explorers Wanted, and the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge.

In addition, Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex is the future home of the space shuttle Atlantis, with a multimillion-dollar exhibit expected to open in July 2013.

Reel FX Acquires Dallas Headquarters Building

0

Dallas, TX, USA — Deep Ellum-based Reel FX Inc. (Dallas | Santa Monica), an award-winning creative studio specializing in animation and visual effects for feature films, commercials and live-venue projects, has secured its footprint in Dallas with the acquisition of 301 N. Crowdus Street. After seven years in the building, Reel FX acquired the 73,200 square foot property to serve as its corporate headquarters. The studio also currently occupies a 16,000 square foot facility in Santa Monica, California.

Billy Gannon and Gary Collett of Cushman & Wakefield of Texas, Inc. represented Reel FX.

“After an 18-month process assessing several unique opportunities in Frisco, Richardson and Dallas, it became very clear that Reel FX should remain in its current location,” said Gannon in a statement. “Deep Ellum offers the perfect environment for the studio’s culture, provides ample amenities, and is located just steps away from DART’s green line. To continue to attract and recruit the best talent in the industry, the Deep Ellum location makes perfect sense for this fast growing company.”

The City of Dallas has offered a substantial economic incentive package as part of their business retention program, which played a significant role in Reel FX’s decision to remain in Dallas. The incentive package was approved by the City Council’s Economic Development Committee on June 4, 2012 and recommended to the full Council for final approval on June 27, 2012. The City’s Economic Development Office (Hammond Perot, Chris O’Brien and Karl Zavitkovsky) clearly demonstrated the importance of retaining Reel FX as a corporate tenant in Dallas. The pro-business attitude of Mayor Mike Rawlings was also instrumental in Reel FX’s decision-making process: he helped develop and structure the City’s economic incentive package, and leveraged relationships with other Dallas businesses to further support the overall incentives offered. The City of Dallas’ partnership with Reel FX showcases the willingness of Dallas to remain a “pro-business” environment and retain the top businesses in the city.

“Helping with the expansion of Reel FX’s headquarters and operations is a big win for Dallas,” said Michael S. Rawlings, Mayor of Dallas. “As a significant employer, who is an award-winning, animation, visual effects, design and entertainment and commercial studio, Reel FX’s commitment to Dallas cements our location as an innovation and creative business hub. We look forward to supporting their continued success and expansion.”

“We have called Dallas home for almost two decades, and our goal was to remain in Dallas and in Deep Ellum,” said Reel FX Chief Operating Officer Kyle Clark. “We couldn’t be happier to stay in the building we consider an important part of our past, and now, our future.”

Wild Vortex Newest Thrill Slide at Wilderness at the Smokies

0

Sevierville, TN, USA (June 7, 2012) — The newest waterslide to debut at Wilderness at the Smokies Resort appeals to a certain type of thrill seeker, perhaps one who has wondered what it might be like to be a drop of water inside a water pistol. The Wild Vortex features a trap door launching pad and a gravity-powered loop-the-loop experience at 2.5 g (g-force) and has adrenaline-hungry visitors lining up for a waterslide experience unlike any other ever seen in the Smokies or the Southeast.

Standing 66-foot tall, the slide is the only near-vertical, translucent, looping waterslide in the Southeast. Riders of the Wild Vortex will enter the capsule at the top of the ride, standing vertically over a trap door. Once the trap door is released, the rider accelerates into a 39-foot vertical free fall drop generating maximum g-force (2.5 g in less than two seconds) before reaching the inclined loop element. The entire ride is over within seven seconds.

“The Wild Vortex provides our guests with the opportunity to witness and experience one of the most extreme thrill rides in any water or amusement park in the country,” said Steve Cruz, General Manager of Wilderness at the Smokies. “It has been an extremely busy year for us as this opening marks the launch of our second major expansion of the year.”

In March, the resort opened Adventure Forest family entertainment park, a ‘dry’ indoor park that has doubled the resort’s indoor park offerings. It features a three-story ropes course, multi-level enclosed laser tag arena, mini-bowling, black-light mini-golf, more than 100 arcade games, a ‘Laser Maze,’ a 23-foot climbing wall, special birthday party rooms, another restaurant and lounge, plus other attractions and activities that do not involve water.

Cruz added, “We look forward to continuing to expand and providing our guests with a new and enhanced experience each time they choose to vacation with us.”

Wilderness at the Smokies, located minutes from Interstate 40 and situated in the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains, is one of the area’s only year-round vacation destinations. With a 36-hole championship golf course, two outdoor waterparks, an indoor waterpark with a wave pool and the Southeast’s only Surf Rider, hot tubs, and countless waterslides and attractions, Wilderness at the Smokies has something for all age groups. It is adjacent to a 200,000 square-foot conference, convention and event center known for hosting the areas largest conferences, athletic events and trade shows.

The resort is owned by Patrick Helland, Pete Helland, Jr., Tim Lucke and Tom Lucke (who also own Wilderness Territory Waterpark Resort in Wisconsin). Work Begins on Paramount Theme Park and LifeStyle Center in Spain, Opening 2015

0

Alhama de Murcia, Spain /Marketwire/ — Proyectos Emblemáticos Murcianos S.A. (PREMURSA) achieved another milestone inthe development of the Paramount theme park and LifeStyle Center in Alhama de Murcia on the morning of May 31, 2012, during a formal ceremony presided over by Ramón Luis Valcárcel, President of the Autonomous Community of Murcia; Joaquín Bascuñana, Delegate of the Government for the Region of Murcia; Alfonso Fernando Cerón, Mayor of the Town Hall of Alhama de Murcia; Michael Bartok, Executive Vice President of Paramount Licensing Inc.; and Jesús Samper, President and CEO of PREMURSA.

After purchasing the project land on March 7th, 2012, the groundbreaking ceremony took place on May 31 and, according to Jesús Samper, “the project will become an international tourist destination estimated to welcome more than 3 million visitors per year.”

Michael Bartok declared Paramount’s goal in Spain is the “establishment of a state-of-the-art theme park intended to attract and entertain both locals and tourists alike.” That goal, according to Mr. Bartok, is bolstered by the region of Murcia “because of its outstanding location and climate as well as its variety of cultural and leisure attractions.”

Furthermore, the first Paramount theme park in Europe and the LifeStyle Center will contribute to the economic development of the Region of Murcia by generating more than 22 thousand jobs, both directly and indirectly. In anticipation of receiving thousands of job applications, PREMURSA will create a virtual office on its website (www.premursa.com) in the coming weeks to facilitate the processing of applications from individuals and companies interested in participating in the project.

The ceremony is a milestone in the development of a project that will come to fruition in the spring of 2015, with the opening of the Paramount theme park and the LifeStyle Center.

The Paramount theme park will include state-of-the-art attractions for all ages and will feature a retail spine along with four themed lands and two themed hotels.

Adjacent to the Paramount theme park, the LifeStyle Center will include a large hotel, commercial and leisure area that will be home to a street mall, restaurants, bars, night clubs and a casino.
