EDITOR’S NOTE: James Cameron’s themed attraction credits include three Thea Award recipients – Terminator 2 3-D: Battle Across Time (Universal Studios Florida, Hollywood, and Japan),  James Cameron’s Titanic: The Experience (Fox Studios Australia), and Titanic Official Movie Tour – along with a traveling exhibition and upcoming Disney theme park projects themed to the Avatar franchise.  Cameron is also producer and director of the IMAX 3D films Ghosts of the Abyss and Aliens of the Deep and executive producer of the giant screen film Volcanoes of the Deep Sea.  Plans call for 3D footage from the Mariana Trench expedition to be incorporated into future immersive films for museum-based theaters and Hollywood motion pictures. — JK

Washington, DC, USA (March 8, 2012) — Filmmaker and National Geographic Explorer-in-Residence James Cameron announced today that he will attempt to reach the world’s deepest point, the Mariana Trench, nearly 7 miles (11.2 km) beneath the ocean’s surface, in the coming weeks. Cameron’s dive in his specially designed submersible marks the launch of DEEPSEA CHALLENGE, a joint scientific project by Cameron, the National Geographic Society and Rolex to conduct deep-ocean research and exploration to expand our knowledge and understanding of these largely unknown parts of the planet.

Cameron’s historic DEEPSEA CHALLENGE expedition will be the first extensive scientific exploration by a manned vehicle to the Mariana Trench’s lowest point, the “Challenger Deep.” Cameron plans to spend six hours at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean trench, some 200 miles (322 km) southwest of Guam, to collect samples for research in marine biology, microbiology, astrobiology, marine geology and geophysics.

Relying on advanced engineering and technologies created by Cameron and his team, successful field tests were completed this week off the coast of Papua New Guinea. They included untethered deep-water dives — including one to a depth of more than 5 miles (more than 8 km) — in the revolutionary, single-pilot DEEPSEA CHALLENGER submersible, the result of an eight-year engineering effort and the deepest-diving manned marine vehicle in existence. The public will be able to follow Cameron’s progress on the expedition at www.DEEPSEACHALLENGE.com.

“The deep trenches are the last unexplored frontier on our planet, with scientific riches enough to fill a hundred years of exploration,” Cameron said. “National Geographic, which has been exploring the world for nearly 125 years, is the ideal partner to help usher in a new era of deep-ocean research and exploration that supports leading scientific institutions in answering questions about the deepest, unexplored parts of the Earth. Our goal is to build a scientific legacy for generations to come. It’s also to inspire people across the globe to celebrate exploration and to explore with us online and through the media we produce.”

Cameron added, “Rolex is also a natural partner in this venture — unique in having reached the Challenger Deep 52 years ago and in its celebrated, century-long history of supporting exploration and helping push the boundaries of human and scientific endeavor.”

The Challenger Deep has only been reached once in a manned descent, on Jan. 23, 1960, by U.S. Navy Lt. Don Walsh and Swiss oceanographer Jacques Piccard in the bathyscaphe Trieste. They spent approximately 20 minutes on the ocean floor before returning to the surface. Now, 52 years later, Cameron’s DEEPSEA CHALLENGER represents breakthroughs in materials science, unique approaches to structural engineering and new ways of imaging through an ultra-small, full ocean depth-rated stereoscopic camera. Cameron’s CAMERON | PACE Group, which supplies 3-D technologies and production support services, has provided the capability to document the historic expedition in high-resolution 3-D.

“Some believe the golden age of exploration is behind us. On the contrary, I believe we are at the beginning of our greatest age of exploration,” said Terry Garcia, National Geographic’s executive vice president for Mission Programs. “We salute James Cameron for his commitment to science and exploration, and we are delighted to be part of this groundbreaking adventure to the deepest and least explored point on Earth.”

In 1960, an experimental Rolex Deepsea Special watch was attached to the hull of the Trieste and emerged in perfect working order after withstanding the huge pressure exerted at 6.78 miles (nearly 11 km) below the surface. The DEEPSEA CHALLENGER submersible will carry a new experimental wristwatch, the Rolex Deepsea Challenge, strapped to its manipulator arm, renewing the pioneering engineering challenge the Swiss watchmaker took up 52 years ago with the Trieste.

“Our affinity with the deep also extends to active and sustained support of renowned marine researchers, supporting excellence and innovation in the advancement of human knowledge,” said Gian Riccardo Marini, Chief Executive Officer of Rolex SA. “I am convinced that James Cameron is bringing us to the threshold of a long-delayed revival in marine exploration. We are proud to have such a passionate and longstanding admirer of Rolex, and to return to the Challenger Deep on this historic venture to help unravel the secrets of the ocean’s deepest places.”

Cameron was named a National Geographic Explorer-in-Residence in 2011. While working on his film “Titanic,” he took 12 submersible dives to the famed shipwreck two and a half miles down in the North Atlantic. The technical success of that expedition led Cameron to form Earthship Productions, which develops films about ocean exploration and conservation. Since then he has led six expeditions, authored a forensic study of the Bismarck wreck site and done extensive 3-D imaging of deep hydrothermal vent sites along the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, the East Pacific Rise and the Sea of Cortez. Cameron has made 72 deep submersible dives, including 33 to Titanic. Fifty-one of these dives were in Russian Mir submersibles to depths of up to 3.03 miles (4.87 km).

Cameron has written and directed numerous films, among them “Avatar,” “Titanic,” “True Lies,” “Terminator 1 and 2,” “The Abyss” and “Aliens.” His films have blazed new trails in visual effects and have set numerous performance records, both domestically and abroad, including 11 Oscars for “Titanic.” “Avatar,” a 3-D science fiction epic reflecting five years of development of new production technologies, was nominated for nine Oscars and won three. “Avatar” is the highest-grossing film in history, surpassing the previous record holder, “Titanic.”

The DEEPSEA CHALLENGE expedition will be chronicled for a 3-D feature film for theatrical release on the intensive technological and scientific efforts behind this historic dive, which will subsequently be broadcast on the National Geographic Channel, and documented for National Geographic magazine. Cameron also will collaborate with National Geographic to create broad-based educational outreach materials.

Scripps Institution of Oceanography, UC San Diego, is the DEEPSEA CHALLENGE Project’s primary science collaborator. For nearly a decade, Scripps has been involved with James Cameron in developing new ways to explore and study the deepest parts of the oceans. With its decades-long history of deep-sea exploration, Scripps is recognized as a world leader in investigating the science of the deep ocean, from exploring the deep’s geological features to researching its exotic marine life inhabitants.

The expedition also is collaborating with the University of Hawaii, Jet Propulsion Laboratory and the University of Guam. Additional funding for education and digital outreach has been provided by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, which supports original research and public understanding of science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

Scientific research permits for the dive have been secured from authorities in the Federated States of Micronesia.

NOTE: In February, two members of the DEEPSEA CHALLENGE team, world-renowned filmmakers and explorers Andrew Wight and Mike deGruy, were killed in a helicopter crash in Australia. The team will honor their memory by moving forward with the expedition as a tribute to them and their contributions to the project.

(March 6, 2012) — Robert Sherman, who with his brother Richard formed the legendary songwriting team of the Sherman Brothers, recipients of a TEA Thea Award in 2002 for Special Achievement, passed away on Monday, March 5, 2012 in London, England.  He was 86.

In addition to numerous Disney and non-Disney films, including Mary Poppins and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Sherman’s original compositions appeared in a number of Disney attractions, including “it’s a small world”, Carousel of Progress, Adventure Thru Inner Space, Journey Into Imagination, and Meet the World.  In the following clip from The Boys: The Sherman Brothers’ Story, available from Walt Disney Home Video, Richard Sherman describes working on Walt Disney’s Enchanted Tiki Room.

In this short promotional film sent to General Electric executives prior to the 1964 New York World’s Fair, the Sherman Brothers perform “It’s a Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow,” the theme song to GE’s Carousel of Progress attraction at the fair, which remains in operation to this day at Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom.  The clip, which appears as a hidden feature on the Walt Disney Treasures DVD Tomorrowland, is presented here courtesy Disney Parks.

Earlier today, The Walt Disney Company’s President and CEO Robert Iger released the following statement:

“Today, on behalf of everyone at Disney, we mourn the loss of an extraordinary talent, Robert Sherman. One of the world’s greatest songwriters and a true Disney legend, his legacy will endure forever through the magic of his music. From ‘Mary Poppins’ and ‘It’s A Small World’ to ‘Winnie The Pooh’ and ‘The Jungle Book’, Robert, along with his brother Richard, wrote many of Disney’s most memorable and beloved songs, which continue to enchant millions of people around the world to this day.”

Walt Disney’s daughter, Diane Disney-Miller, issued the following statement through the Walt Disney Family Museum:

“We are deeply saddened to learn of Robert Sherman’s passing. He and his younger brother, Richard, brought beautiful words and music to the world of Disney, the films and the parks alike. The whole world shares a love for their music and my father loved and respected them both. We offer our respectful sympathies to Robert’s children and grandchildren, and to Richard and his family. Theirs was a long and fruitful collaboration, and we’re all grateful for it.”

Rick Rothschild of FAR Out! Creative Direction is creative director at Global Immersion and president of the Themed Entertainment Association (TEA).  During his 30 year tenure as a creative director at Walt Disney Imagineering, Rothschild directed and produced over 25 Disney attractions.  He shared his thoughts with InPark:

“Beyond the sadness that the whole world, and certainly the themed entertainment industry, feels with Robert’s passing, I am sad to say that I never worked directly with Robert or Richard.

“That being said, as a member of both the Disney family and the industry at large, I will say that with the passing of Robert, our ‘small’ world lost a poetic voice whose many ‘spoons full of sugar’ crafted in collaboration with his brother Richard made us all smile every time we heard them…as children and as adults!”

UPDATE: The Walt Disney Company has issued the following release:

Burbank, CA, USA (March 6, 2012) /BUSINESS WIRE/ — Robert B. Sherman, half of the acclaimed and prolific Sherman Brothers songwriting team, passed away in London, England, on March 5 at The London Clinic, from an age-related illness. He was 86 years old. In collaboration with his brother, Richard M. Sherman (who survives him), Robert wrote some of the most memorable and beloved songs in the history of modern family entertainment. Personally selected by Walt Disney to write songs for his films, television shows, and theme parks, the Sherman Brothers had perhaps their biggest career milestone with the 1964 Disney masterpiece Mary Poppins, for which they received two of the film’s five Oscar® wins for Best Song (“Chim Chim Cher-ee”) and Best Original Score. They are responsible for more motion picture musical song scores than any other songwriting team in film history.

Throughout their incredible 50-year career as a songwriting team, the Sherman Brothers garnered nine Academy Award® nominations; won three Grammy Awards®; were inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame; received a remarkable array of 24 gold and platinum albums; and were the recipients of a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Robert and his brother were the subject of an acclaimed 2009 documentary, the boys: the sherman brothers story, and recipients of the National Medal of Arts (the highest honor the United States government bestows on artists). In recent years, the Shermans have enjoyed great success on the London and Broadway stage with twin theatrical productions of two of their most beloved films: Mary Poppins and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.

Commenting on Robert’s passing, Richard Sherman said, “My brother Bob was a poetic soul with limitless imagination and talent. He was my loyal friend all through the years. We were fortunate to have been blessed by two great men, our key inspirations—our father, Al, who teamed us up and taught us the craft, and Walt Disney, who provided us with an opportunity to realize our greatest dreams. Bob will be lovingly missed by all of us in his family.”

“Today, on behalf of everyone at Disney, we mourn the loss of an extraordinary talent, Robert Sherman,” said Disney President and CEO Bob Iger. “One of the world’s greatest songwriters and a true Disney legend, his legacy will endure forever through the magic of his music. From Mary Poppins and it’s a small world to Winnie the Pooh and The Jungle Book, Robert, along with his brother Richard, wrote many of Disney’s most memorable and beloved songs, which continue to enchant millions of people around the world to this day.”

Robert’s son, Jeff Sherman, who co-directed the documentary the boys, noted, “My dad passed away peacefully in London on Monday night. He was an incredible man who loved life and lived it to the fullest. As he often said, he wanted to bring happiness into the world, and unquestionably he succeeded. His love and his prayers, his philosophy and his poetry will live on forever. Forever his songs and his genius will bring hope, joy, and love to this small world.”

Multiple Oscar®-winning composer/songwriter Alan Menken said, “The Sherman brothers legacy goes far beyond the craft of songwriting. There is a magic in their songs and in the films and musicals they breathed life into. My thoughts and prayers are with Robert’s family, and with Richard Sherman, who has become a dear and precious friend to me.”

Leonard Maltin, film historian and author of the book The Disney Films, observed, “Robert Sherman and his brother Richard spent a decade providing lively, tuneful, and memorable songs for Walt Disney’s movies, TV shows, and theme parks—and worked their way into the hearts of millions of fans all over the world. Their songs have the unusual—and inimitable—ability to make you feel good. No wonder people took to them when they were new and still respond to them today.”

Jeff Kurtti, co-author of the 1998 Sherman Brothers biography, Walt’s Time: From Before to Beyond, said, “Bob, along with his brother Dick, wrote the songbook of youth for generations. I am often confronted with the idea that Sherman songs are ‘kiddie songs.’ This couldn’t be further from the truth. Bob in particular had an affection for, and a felicity with, words that gave the illusion of simplicity to truly complex works. He was a quiet center of intellect and feeling, and nothing revealed his inner life more than when he and his brother expressed rich ideas and deep emotions through music.”

Born in New York City on December 19, 1925, Robert Sherman was the son of popular Tin Pan Alley songwriter Al Sherman. His father was famous for composing such early 20th century song hits as “You’ve Got to Be a Football Hero,” “Potatoes are Cheaper, Tomatoes are Cheaper (Now’s the Time to Fall in Love!)” and “No! No! A Thousand Times, No!” But perhaps father Sherman’s greatest achievement was in the teaming of his sons to form one of the most successful and enduring songwriting partnerships in music history.

After a series of fits and starts the brothers found themselves composing numerous top-10 tunes for teen star and original Mouseketeer Annette Funicello, including the 1959 hit “Tall Paul” (marking the first time that a female singer reached a top ten slot for a rock ‘n’ roll single). The Shermans penned songs for such popular Funicello record albums as Hawaiianette (including “Pineapple Princess”), Dance Annette and The Story of My Teens, all presented on Buena Vista Records, a music subsidiary of Walt Disney Productions.

In December 1960, the Sherman brothers debuted their classic rock and roll song “You’re Sixteen.” The tune carries the distinction of having twice gone to Billboard’s No. 1 spot: once with Johnny Burnette and then an unprecedented second time with Ringo Starr in 1974. This seminal Sherman Brothers song hit, along with their tunes that helped to make Annette Funicello Disney’s first-ever musical teen star, caught the attention of Walt Disney himself and he quickly hired them as staff songwriters for his studio in 1960.

The early 1960s saw the Shermans compose a number of songs for such classic Disney films and TV productions such as Zorro, The Absent-Minded Professor, The Parent Trap (“Let’s Get Together,” performed by Hayley Mills), Walt Disney’s Wonderful World of Color (theme song), In Search of the Castaways, Summer Magic (their first film musical) and The Sword in the Stone (their first Disney animated feature).

When Walt Disney produced four shows for 1964-65 New York World’s Fair, he turned to the Sherman brothers to provide memorable music for three of the attractions. For the General Electric Carousel of Progress, they penned the show’s optimistic theme song “There’s a Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow.” The Ford Motor Company sponsored the Disney attraction Magic Skyway, featuring the song “Get the Feel of the Wheel of a Ford.”

The New York World’s Fair also provided the Shermans with the opportunity to create perhaps their most famous song. After Walt Disney decided that his salute to the children of the world, being developed for the UNICEF pavilion and sponsored by Pepsi-Cola, needed a catchy theme song, he turned to his trusted songwriting team of Richard and Robert. The brothers composed “it’s a small world (after all).” Since then, it has become one of the most perennially translated and performed songs on earth.

In 1964, the Sherman brothers began work on what they affectionately refer to as their “magnum opus,” Walt Disney’s 1964 musical film fantasy Mary Poppins. The film was nominated for a Disney-record 13 Academy Awards, including Best Picture. On April 5, 1965, at the 37th Annual Academy Awards the film won five Oscars, including two statuettes for the Shermans—Best Song (“Chim Chim Cher-ee”) and Best Original Score.

The remainder of the 1960s and early 70s saw the Sherman brothers contributing popular songs and scores to numerous classic Disney films. Some of their memorable Disney top box-office film credits of the era include The Monkey’s Uncle (1965), That Darn Cat! (1965), Winnie the Pooh and the Honey Tree (1966), The Gnome-Mobile (1967), The Jungle Book (1967), The Happiest Millionaire (1967), Winnie the Pooh and the Blustery Day (1969), The One and Only Genuine Original Family Band (1969), The Aristocats (1970) and Bedknobs and Broomsticks (1971).

In the early 1970s, the Sherman brothers left the Walt Disney Studios to pursue other film projects. They went on to provide an array of music, songs and occasional screenplays to such memorable family films as Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (1968), Snoopy Come Home (1972) Charlotte’s Web (1973), The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1973), Huckleberry Finn (1974) and The Slipper and the Rose (1976).

In 1990, the Sherman brothers received the prestigious Disney Legends Award given by The Walt Disney Company. The award is given to individuals whose body of work has made a significant impact on the Disney entertainment legacy. They were also honored in 1991 with BMI’s (Broadcast Music Incorporated) Lifetime Achievement Award and share a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame directly across from Grauman’s Chinese Theatre, where Mary Poppins premiered in 1964.

In 1999, Camphor Tree Publishers released the Sherman brothers’ autobiographical book entitled Walt’s Time: From Before to Beyond. The impressive family album-style book chronicles their amazing career(s) from childhood through their current endeavors using personal recollections and rarely seen family photos, film production photos and artwork.

The following year the Sherman brothers marked the new millennium with their fifth score for a Disney animated Winnie the Pooh film—The Tigger Movie (released in February 2000). For the film’s keynote song “Your Heart Will Lead You Home,” they shared composing credits with famed pop star Kenny Loggins.

Accolades continued in September 2002 as the Sherman brothers received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Themed Entertainment Association in a ceremony at Hollywood’s historic El Capitan Theatre. In February 2003, Richard and Robert received the Windsor McCay Lifetime Achievement Award during the 30th Annual Annie Awards, presented by the International Animated Film Society.

In March 2010, the Disneyland Resort in California saluted the Shermans for their musical contributions to Disney Parks around the world. They were honored with their very own “window” on Main Street, U.S.A., which states: “Two Brothers Tunemakers – Richard M. Sherman and Robert B. Sherman: We’ll Write Your Tunes For a Song.”

In November 2006, a stage musical of their 2004 Olivier Award winning London West End production of Mary Poppins, produced by Disney and Cameron Mackintosh, opened on Broadway to acclaim and received seven Tony Award® nominations. The show combines the stories of P.L. Travers and the Academy Award-winning film to create an unforgettable theatrical experience and is currently playing to packed theaters on Broadway and on tour across North America and Australia.

In April 2002, the stage version of their classic 1968 film musical Chitty Chitty Bang Bang opened to acclaim at the historic London Palladium. Nominated for three Olivier Awards in the United Kingdom and five Tony Awards on Broadway, the show won Best Musical at the 2002 Variety Awards and the coveted 2006 Manchester Evening News Theatre Award for Best Family Show. The popular show is currently on tour throughout North America and the United Kingdom.

Thanks to their musical contributions to the Disney Parks around the world, the sun never sets on a Sherman Brothers song—their tunes are heard daily in California, Florida, Japan, France and China. Through the years many popular Disney Park attractions and entertainment spectaculars have featured Sherman brothers tunes, including Walt Disney’s Enchanted Tiki Room, Carousel of Progress, it’s a small world, Adventure Thru Inner Space, Innoventions, The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh, Meet the World, Journey into Imagination, Fantasmic! and, most recently, World of Color.

Following the successful West End debut of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, and the death of his beloved wife of 50 years, Joyce, Robert moved to London in 2002 to embark on a life filled with personal projects that included painting, writing poems and completing a long gestating collection of short stories entitled Moose.

In addition to his brother, Richard M. Sherman, Robert is survived by four children—Jeff Sherman, Robert J. Sherman, Laurie Sherman, and Tracy Sherman; as well as five grandchildren: Alex and Ryan (Jeff’s sons), and Josh, Amy and Sarah (Laurie’s children).

A public funeral service is planned at Hillside Memorial Park and Mortuary in Culver City on Friday, March 9 at 1 p.m. in the Large Chapel. Plans for a life celebration will be announced shortly.

New Exhibit at North Carolina’s Biltmore to Showcase Lives of Vanderbilt Family

0

Asheville, NC, USA (March 7, 2012) /PRNewswire/ — A visit to America’s largest home often spurs this question among guests: “What was it like to be a Vanderbilt and live such an extraordinary life?” After years of research, Biltmore answers the question with a new exhibition beginning April 7, “The Vanderbilts at Home and Abroad.”

The exhibition provides a look at the lives of George, Edith and Cornelia Vanderbilt. Rare objects from Biltmore’s collection and new stories pulled from estate archives provide an exciting look into a bygone era. Entry to the exhibition is included in estate admission.

“For years, guests at Biltmore have wanted to know more about the Vanderbilts,” said Ellen Rickman, director of Museum and Guest Services. “With this exhibition, we’ve tried to craft a vivid story that showcases their extraordinary lives. There is so much to see and discover. When you enter the exhibition space, it’s like stepping back into history.”

The exhibition begins with George Vanderbilt’s background and the Vanderbilt family tree. Excerpts from Vanderbilt’s diary, stories of his world travels as a young man and family photos reveal what it was like to grow up in one of the world’s wealthiest families.

His transition from “America’s most eligible bachelor” to a married family man is detailed with facts about his courtship with Edith Stuyvesant Dresser, highlights from their European honeymoon and photos of their homecoming to Biltmore House. The birth of their daughter Cornelia is captured with family letters and intimate photos from Edith Vanderbilt’s personal Kodak camera.

Throughout the exhibition, private family photos and priceless objects provide a tangible bridge to the past. The silver tea service from George Vanderbilt’s private rail car, Edith Vanderbilt’s Louis Vuitton trunk and authentic samurai swords from a trip to Japan reveal a family that valued intellectual curiosity, new cultures and history.

While researching the Vanderbilts’ extensive world travels, the Museum Services staff discovered the Vanderbilts were scheduled to sail on Titanic. “While going through the estate’s archives, we were able to piece together a fascinating story about why the Vanderbilts did not board Titanic,” said Darren Poupore, chief curator. “For the first time, we share the fateful decision that more than likely saved their lives.” A model of Titanic, original menus from the ill-fated ship, and archival images on loan from Titanic Museum Attraction in Pigeon Forge, Tenn., will be on display to help tell the story.

Detailed stories and rare artifacts paint the picture of a home filled with joy and hospitality. Cornelia Vanderbilt’s elaborate costume from her 21st birthday masquerade party, luxurious china, crystal and silver used during formal dinners on the estate are part of the exhibition’s collection.

Other rare objects on display include an early Harley-Davidson motorcycle, on loan from the vintage American motorcycle museum Wheels Through Time in Maggie Valley, N.C. It captures George Vanderbilt’s passion for new technology. The bike is nearly identical to one once owned by the Vanderbilts, and was used by estate employees for transportation across the estate.

The opening of “The Vanderbilts at Home and Abroad” on April 7 coincides with the beginning of Festival of Flowers, Biltmore’s grand spring celebration.

Chicago, IL, USA (March 7, 2012) /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — Adler Planetarium President Paul H. Knappenberger Jr., Ph.D., announced today that he would step down at the end of 2012 after 21 years of service.

Knappenberger, who joined the Adler in 1991, has led the Museum through two major long-range plans that have significantly strengthened the planetarium. The most recent was initiated during the Adler’s 75th anniversary in 2005. In that year, the institution announced a strategic plan to transform the Adler from a traditional planetarium into a 21st century space science center. As that effort reached a successful conclusion last year, he began discussing his retirement with museum Trustees.

“In 2005, we announced a new vision to inspire the next generation of explorers and become the world’s leading space science center,” said Knappenberger. “Thanks to the leadership of our Trustees, we have accomplished the central goals of our strategic plan, including a major fundraising initiative.”

In December 2011, the Adler completed its most ambitious and successful campaign. Chaired by ComEd CEO Frank M. Clark and retired NASA astronaut Captain James A. Lovell, Jr., the Lift-Off! Campaign for Chicago’s Space Center raised $54 million, surpassing its original goal by more than 50%. The campaign made possible new museum exhibitions, expanded research activities, extensive new public learning programs and a dramatic renovation of the historic Sky Theater.

“We are grateful to Paul for his service and experienced leadership,” said John W. Estey, president and CEO of S&C Electric Company and chairman of the Adler Planetarium Board of Trustees. “In his career at the Adler, Paul has reinvented America’s First Planetarium to be a leader in research and public learning. We are doubly grateful Paul has agreed to continue until we identify his successor later this year.”

Upon his arrival at the Adler, Knappenberger initiated a research program which today features Ph.D. scholars working in astronomy, the history of astronomy and, most recently, the study of how people learn about science in informal settings. The latter brought the Adler’s understanding of its audiences into sharp focus. Since 2009, the museum has been a lead partner in the Citizen Science Alliance, a global consortium engaging a large online community of enthusiasts, the vast majority with no professional degrees in astronomy, to analyze vast data sets generated by astronomy researchers around the world. The Adler is the lead museum partner in the Citizen Science Alliance and its popular website platform Zooniverse.org.

Another, highly visible accomplishment was a $40 million expansion culminating in the opening of the Adler’s Sky Pavilion in January 1999. The two-story, 60,000-square-foot facility more than doubled the museum’s exhibition space adding four new galleries, new museum restaurant and retail spaces, visitor amenities, and the world’s first full-dome digital planetarium theater.

As part of the Adler’s 2005 strategic plan, Knappenberger lead a partnership with Sesame Workshop and the Beijing Planetarium to create One World, One Sky: Big Bird’s Adventure, a planetarium show taking young explorers and their favorite Sesame Street friends on a journey of discovery. The show, which opened in 2008, now plays in more than 55 theaters around the world and is likely the most-watched planetarium show in history.

In 2010, the Adler opened Planet Explorers, engaging the youngest museum visitors (ages 3–8 years) in a modern day space adventure. The permanent exhibition, generously funded by The Boeing Company, invites young explorers to learn about conditions necessary to sustain life on Earth and in space as they conduct a mission launch sequence, visit the International Space Station and ultimately land on an imaginary Planet X.

Later in the same year, the Adler closed its historic Sky Theater – the first planetarium theater in the western hemisphere – to begin a major renovation. After a period of ten months and an investment of more than $15 million, the museum unveiled the new Grainger Sky Theater in July 2011. The world’s most technologically advanced theater, it is the centerpiece of the Adler’s popular Deep Space Adventure experience, a program of exhibitions and an entirely original, high-resolution show.

As a result of the strategic plan’s innovations, the Adler’s annual attendance has increased more than 17% since 2005, despite serious challenges faced by cultural institutions in the ongoing economic downturn. Attendance in the current year, following the opening of the new Grainger Sky Theater, is up by more than 14% over 2011.

Before coming to the Adler in 1991, Knappenberger served for 18 years as founding director of the Science Museum of Virginia, in Richmond. He has taught astronomy at Emory University, Georgia State University, University of Richmond, University of Virginia, and Virginia Commonwealth University.

Knappenberger is a member of numerous science and education associations, including the American Astronomical Society, the International Planetarium Society, and regional planetarium associations. He served on NASA’s Space Science Advisory Committee and chaired its Education and Public Outreach Task Force. He currently chairs the Chicago Council for Science and Technology, and has served as President of the Association of Science-Technology Centers and on the Council of the American Association of Museums. In Autumn 2011, he was recognized by the Illinois Association of Museums for his 44-year career as a museum professional and leader.

Knappenberger is the past president of Museums in the Park, a consortium of the ten major museums on Chicago Park District property. He recently chaired the Museum Partners group of the Chicago Systemic Initiative, part of a nationwide effort focusing on systemic improvement of math and science instruction in schools.

A native of Reading, Pennsylvania, Knappenberger, 69, received his Bachelor’s degree in mathematics in 1964 from Franklin and Marshall College. He earned a Masters and Ph.D. in astronomy from the University of Virginia, where his research efforts included work in optical interferometry.

Estey will lead the search committee for Knappenberger’s replacement, assisted by the executive search firm Russell Reynolds.
