    Press release from ASTC:
The Roy L. Shafer Leading Edge Awards are presented annually to ASTC members and/or their employees in recognition of extraordinary accomplishments that not only enhance the performance of their own institutions, but also significantly advance the mission of science-technology centers and museums. This following awards were presented on October 15, 2011.

Leading Edge Award for Business Practice
The International Centre for Life, Sustainability Through Diversity
The Centre for Life has rendered itself sustainable for the foreseeable future by developing a business portfolio that provides funds for the center’s dual missions of public science engagement and support for world-class scientific research. The science centre runs on revenue generated from two onsite cafés, a parking garage, a conference and banqueting business, and leases not only to university laboratories, but also to popular bars and nightclubs.

Philippine Science Centrum, Typhoon Ondoy: Rapid Response & Recovery
On September 26, 2009, Typhoon Ondoy sent nine-foot-high flood waters into the science center, submerging its exhibits and traveling exhibitions. Within 24 hours, the center’s staff and trustees met and immediately started the first steps of rebuilding, launching a fundraising campaign called Project 926 with the goal of raising 9 million Philippine pesos (about USD 210,000) in two ways (cash and in-kind assistance) within six months. The center reopened to the public less than six weeks after the typhoon hit, and was fully restored after four and a half months.

Leading Edge Award for Visitor Experience (small center)
Amazement Square, Amazing Adventures of Scorpy Bug
The Amazing Adventures of Scorpy Bug is a curriculum-based cartoon series designed to help educators take an interactive and interdisciplinary approach to teaching challenging concepts. The series has been made available free-of-charge to teachers and families through publication in the regional newspaper and through a comic book series that addresses specific scientific topics. Scorpy is integrated across all museum platforms: exhibitions, outreach programs, website, and community and school partnerships.

Oak Hammock Marsh Interpretive Centre, Wetland Outreach
Migratory birds depend on wetlands, and many species are endangered due to wetland destruction. In the past three years, the center fostered public awareness among students and educators across a vast geographic area on the value of wetlands through several outreach programs. The “Wetlands On-the-Go” team delivered programs to 56,000 students in 2,500 classrooms in over 100 communities in three Canadian provinces. The center also held eight workshops for teachers in six Caribbean locations and provided educational resources to underserved communities.

    0

ORANGE, CA, USA – Outside the Lines (OTL), a California-based design and themed construction company, has been named to the List of Top 100 Fastest-Growing Private Companies in Orange County by the Orange County Business Journal. The business journal ranked OTL No. 16 on its list. This is the first year OTL has been included.

“This is a high honor for our company,” says OTL CEO J. Wickham Zimmerman. “Being recognized for our growth is an indication that our customers feel we bring value to their projects.”

Zimmerman attributes OTL’s growth to “a talented team that strives to provide exceptional service and quality on every project they’re involved in. Since our founding, we’ve never deviated from our vision of providing the finest rockwork, themed construction and specialty water feature projects in the world.”

OTL President Hugh F. Hughes says that “when working with clients, we strive to implement ways to control costs and serve our clients better, while maintaining the creativity that has become our hallmark.”

Worldwide, OTL has created signature rockwork and water features at projects ranging from private estates in California and Antigua to golf courses in Korea and retail entertainment centers in Egypt.

OTL was one of few construction companies on the Orange County Business Journal’s 2011 List of Fastest-Growing Private Companies, which was heavy with technology-focused companies. To qualify for the list, organizations must be privately held, based in Orange County, California, and demonstrate a significant two-year average revenue growth rate.

In August, OTL was also named to the coveted 2011 Inc. 500 List of fastest-growing private U.S. companies. Inc. magazine ranked OTL No. 411 on its 30th annual Inc. 500. Within the construction industry, OTL ranked 17th. Over the past three years, OTL experienced 832% in revenue growth, which helped it earn the Inc. 500 rating.

Sally Corporation adds new Director of Ride Systems

    0

Jacksonville, FL, USA — Dark ride and animatronics producer Sally Corporation has selected David Ciciora as the company’s new director of ride systems.

Ciciora began his career in the amusement park industry at Legoland California in 1998, after serving fifteen years in the U.S. Navy (primarily aboard nuclear submarines). Following five years as ride supervisor at Legoland, Ciciora became manager of ride maintenance for the Morey organization in Wildwood, New Jersey, before being named director of maintenance for Hard Rock Park in Myrtle Beach. With the economic downturn and closing of Hard Rock Park, Ciciora transitioned to the West Coast to join the team at Universal Studios Hollywood.

“Much as I enjoyed working at Universal, I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to come to Sally,” says Ciciora. “I’ve worked with the Sally team on dark rides over the years, and appreciate the quality and dedication they bring to each project. The scope of upcoming projects is wide, and the company is moving forward on several fronts, technically. I’m looking forward to the challenges.”

“David has a depth of knowledge and expertise in electronics and ride system technology, plus the experience of being the end user of Sally’s rides and animatronics, that makes him a perfect fit for us,” says Sally Corporation CEO John Wood. “When our long-time vice president of technical services, Ray Dominey, decided to retire from the industry, David’s name came up immediately.”

Ciciora and his family, wife Jody and three children, have moved to Florida and are residing in Orange Park, just outside Jacksonville.

Planet Shark: Predator or Prey opens November 3 at Museum of Nature & Science

    0
Massive exhibit to feature full-size models including an 18-foot Great White, fossils dating back 380 million years, ginormous jaws, thousands of teeth, interactive displays, Jaws® movie memorabilia and more, plus Sharks IMAX® film for the ultimate out-of-water shark experience

DALLAS, TX, USA – Billed as the biggest blockbuster exhibition to hit the Museum of Nature & Science since BODYWORLDS and marking only its second stop in the United States, Planet Shark: Predator or Prey will bring the ultimate out-of-water shark experience to Fair Park November 3, 2011, through September 16, 2012. Featuring explanations and examinations of almost every aspect of the shark, from evolution and biology to popular culture and the fin trade, this massive traveling exhibition will guide visitors through the murky myths and fascinating facts that have surrounded sharks for centuries. To expand the experience, the popular IMAX® film SHARKS, presented by Jean-Michel Cousteau, also will open November 3 giving museum goers a chance to take a virtual journey underwater with the ocean’s oldest predator. As a special opportunity, the Museum of Nature & Science will offer the Twin Fin value package, which includes admission to the Planet Shark exhibit andSHARKS IMAX® film at discounted rates.

Created by Grande Exhibitions of Australia and spanning 12,000 square feet and five galleries, Planet Shark: Predator or Prey will feature displays of full-scale specimen models including an 18-foot Great White, row-after-row of rare fossils dating as far back as 380 million years, thousands of teeth and mega-sized jaws. Fascinating interview footage from shark attack survivors, images and other archives will be on view, plus movie memorabilia including original posters, props, dive cages and more from the 1975 classic Jaws.

“This is the largest exhibit we’ve ever hosted – it’s even bigger than BODYWORLDS,” said Paul Vinson, director of exhibits for the Museum. “It’s 12,000 square feet of sharks from all over the world and all through time, including fossils, jaws and teeth, full-size models, and even frozen specimens. It’s about as close as you can get to diving with the sharks without a boat!”

Presented by marine biologist Jean-Michel Cousteau, SHARKS provides a close encounter with what is perceived to be the deadliest hunter in the water. The stunning documentary shows sharks as they really are in their natural habitat – not wicked man-eating creatures but wild and fascinating animals that have been in existence since a million years before dinosaurs roamed the earth. Audiences will experience what it’s like when divers face off with these infamous creatures and get some surprising information about their watery world.

The film required two years of production, an extensive nine-month filming expedition at nine locations, 500 dive hours and 100 hours of footage.

“The stunning images really place you in the middle of the colorful undersea world,” said Vinson. “Along with incredible shark encounters, audiences will get up close with sea lions, be surrounded by huge schools of fish and get so near to manta rays and jellyfish swimming past that they will feel like they can reach out and touch them! SHARKS isn’t just a movie, it’s an exhilarating experience!”

Admission to Planet Shark: Predator or Prey requires a surcharge in addition to the purchase of MNS general admission for a total admission cost of $18 for adults (18-61); $16 for seniors (62+) and students (12-17); $13 for children (2-11); and only $5 for MNS members of all ages. Children under 2 are free. Planet Shark will be on display in the MNS Science Building at 1318 S. 2nd Avenue in Fair Park from November 3, 2011 through September 16, 2012.

Adventure World Warsaw shares concept renderings for theme park/ water park resort

    0

The new theme park/waterpark resort, Adventure World Warsaw, will begin construction in spring 2012 and is slated to open in 2014.

Park organizers state: ‘Adventure World Warsaw will consist of an all-year part and of open-air attractions open from April to November. The entrance to the park will lead through the Entertainment Village, where visitors can watch several art performances or visit bars, restaurants and stores. Passing by attractions of this part of the compound, the guests will arrive right in front of the impressive Grand Resort hotel – a building with highly stylised architecture. Under the hotel there will be a passage to the open-air part of the park and to so-called winter zone, the all-year part of theme park neighbouring with the Grand Resort hotel. Turning left before the hotel, the visitors will arrive at the Aqua Park and Aqua Hotel, directly connected with the aqua-park. The water slides, swimming pools and other, so far unprecedented in Poland, water attractions located under a gigantic dome, will be accessible 365 days a year.

‘Using the passage under the Grand Resort hotel, the visitors will enter the Theme Park, being the very core of the Adventure World Warsaw. The first part thereof will be the Adventure Harbour – a unique marketplace filled with stores, restaurants and other attractions. But this is where real entertainment just begins. Besides this part, the Park will have also five different theme islands. Two of them will belong to the all-year part of the Park: the Lost Kingdom to the right of the Adventure Harbour, where the visitors will be exposed to such powerful experiences as an earthquake of volcano eruption. On the left there will be the Polish Square, whose architecture will be reminiscent of the old towns to be found in Polish cities. And this is where one can meet characters from Polish legends and fairy tales, such as Pan Twardowski, inviting guests to visit his moving palace, or experience an adventure in a flying vehicle among other Polish fairy tales and legends. The location of each of the park’s theme islands can seen from bird’s eye view. The Creature Lagoon is the most joyful of them all, full of mythical creatures who love having fun and playing pranks. At the same altitude but on the other side of the Adventure Harbour, there is the Land of Legends – referring to Ancient civilisations, including the Mayan and Egyptian ones. The Castle Island located on the outskirts of the Adventure World Warsaw will provide an opportunity to meet Merlin, King Arthur, witches and dragons.

‘Peter Jan Mulder, the CEO in Las Palm, a company established to deploy the Adventure World Warsaw project, says, “In the second phase of the Project we are planning, among others, to open successive hotels and the second theme park to be created just beside the first stage of the planned investment.”

    Teetering on the Edge

    0

InPark Correspondent Edward Wills received the lucky opportunity to experience the new Edge Walk attraction at Toronto’s CN Tower (while Editor Martin Palicki watched from the relative comfort of the observation deck’s Edge Walk live TV). The hour-long experience starts with a briefing and safety checks before ascending the tower for a 30-minute circular tour around the ledge. During the tour, Edward inched towards the edge, performed a back lean and a courageous forward-facing lean… All of which you can see for yourself in this short video.

The video and photos (while edited by InPark) weren’t made special for us. Every participant receives a DVD of their experience and photos in digital and print format to share, as well as admission to the rest of the tower’s attractions, which include a (comparatively mundane) observation deck, glass floor area, 3d film and motion simulator. Spaces for the Edge Walk are limited and extremely popular. Plan in advance, especially if you are visiting Toronto for only a limited time. www.cntower.ca.

Dutch Maritime Museum reopens following major renovation – new AV systems and interactives

    0
    Image: Het Scheepvaartmuseum

Message from Richmond Sound Design Ltd., Rapenburg Plaza and Het Scheepvaartmuseum:

“On 2 October 2011, the Dutch Maritime Museum – Het Scheepvaartmuseum – reopened following major renovation. The museum consists of several themed exhibitions, object exhibitions and interactive exhibits. Rapenburg Plaza made an important contribution to the interior layout of the Museum.

    The Voyage at Sea

Rapenburg Plaza are responsible for the complete media and lighting control, the major part of the audio-visual installations and also the entire technical content, including the lighting & sound design for the Voyage at Sea – an impressive maritime experience. A Richmond Sound Design SoundMan-Server Virtual Sound System with 96 track playback and 48 input and output channels handles all the sound content and effects as well as all audio from the video sources in this amazing attraction.

“The Voyage at Sea is a twenty-minute show divided over five rooms in which the public is taken on a journey through five hundred years of Dutch maritime history. Rapenburg Plaza was part of the creative and production teams responsible for designing and building the Voyage at Sea. For this spectacular interactive exhibit, we were responsible for the lighting design, the AV and system design and the entire technical execution. Come and sail with us soon!

    ShowControl
“To control all three themed exhibitions, the seven object exhibitions and the two interactive exhibits, Rapenburg Plaza designed, installed and programmed a network based on ShowControl. This system was built using Medialon software, KissBox interfaces and industrial network hardware and software. The system allows the personnel complete control over all lighting and AV equipment, however Rapenburg Plaza programmers can also manage and monitor the entire installation remotely.

    Lighting control
“Rapenburg Plaza itself was partly responsible for the ingenious lighting control system. An open DMX infrastructure was fitted to low-voltage rails in all the museum’s rooms and showcases, providing more than four thousand individually addressable spotlights with the correct data. All fittings were therefore included in a large E*Net DMX network and can be individually controlled. This not only applies to all LED fittings in the showcases but also to all tunable-white and RGB spotlights on the ceiling rails.

    AV technology
“In addition to the specialisms, media control and lighting design mentioned above, we also supplied and installed all the AV equipment for the seven object exhibitions, the See you in the Golden Age exhibition, Mijn.Expo (the world’s largest iPad) and, of course, the Voyage at Sea.

    Equipment overview
“Here are a few figures to provide a global overview of the size of the ShowControl network and the DMX and AV installation”

    • 79 audio- and/or video players
    • 59 PCs or servers
    • 36 industrial network switches
    • 46 Ethernet DMX interfaces
    • 48 DMX splitters
    • 56 video projectors
    • 28 screens or touch screens
    • 47 audio amplifiers
    • 238 loudspeakers
    • 123 interfaces

InPark Video from Nuit Blanche Toronto

    0
Luc Courchesne, McLuhan’s Massage Parlour, 2011

A couple of Saturdays ago, InPark had the luck of being in Toronto during the annual Nuit Blanche art festival. Held annually in Toronto as well as other cities around the world, Nuit Blanche turns the city into an artist’s canvas for one night, roughly from sundown to sunrise. There are hundreds of art installations and they run the gamut from simple to extremely complex. Many, however, take advantage of technology and audio visual equipment, making the evening interesting not only from an art perspective but from an entertainment and special effects perspective.

The short video clip below showcases some of our favorites from the event.
