Merlin Entertainments announces the second year of its U.K.-based Engineering Academy, alongside the launch of its 2024 engineering apprenticeship cohort. This pioneering Academy program aims to equip both Merlin’s technical employees and new apprentices with the critical skills and knowledge needed to thrive in a rapidly evolving technological landscape.
The 2024 cohort will consist of 27 individuals, reflecting a 63% growth from the previous year.
Primarily targeting both current U.K. employees and new apprentices, the Academy provides hands-on training tailored to the future of engineering and facilities maintenance roles. The Academy ensures that participants are not only equipped to navigate the evolving tech landscape but are also primed to drive innovation across the industry.
With a focus on upskilling, this year to date the Engineering Academy has offered 56 training courses across 21 subjects with 350 training spaces. Additionally, over the next six months, the Academy will be offering a further 15 new courses. Merlin has also developed nine new masterclasses which have supported technical colleagues in Florida, New York, Malaysia and Korea.
Michael Jones, Head of the Engineering Academy, said: “At Merlin, we recognize that continuous learning and upskilling are critical to staying ahead of the rapid technological advancements shaping our industry. By actively investing in the development of our team’s capabilities, we’re not just closing the skills gap — we’re building a workforce ready to lead in an increasingly competitive, efficient, and innovative landscape. Within the Engineering Academy, our focus is on practical, real-world skills that can be immediately applied, ensuring our team members drive impact and contribute to our success from day one.”
With this initiative, Merlin Entertainments continues to strengthen its reputation as a trailblazer in fostering talent and driving technological progress across the industry. Through its diverse course offerings, including Programmable Logic Controller Fault Finding, Hydraulic Fundamentals and Senior Engineering Manager, the Academy provides flexible learning opportunities that cater to the unique needs of today’s workforce. Courses are available through in-person workshops, online learning modules, and hands-on sessions to ensure participants gain both theoretical knowledge and practical skills.
Kei Graham-Gordon, Engineering Improver and Level 4 apprentice within Merlin’s Engineering Academy, said: “Since completing my Level 3 apprenticeship at Thorpe Park Resort in August, I’ve transitioned into the role of Engineering Improver, which is essentially a Junior Engineer. I’m currently pursuing my Level 4 HNC in General Engineering (Mechanical and Electrical). A typical day to day during our operating season sees me completing our planned preventative maintenances checks (PPMs) on various attractions and equipment, and also responding to breakdowns when they occur. During our closed season I’m part of a bigger team responsible for stripping down all our attractions and equipment to component level, these components are then inspected for wear and defects and if necessary, replaced.
“The most rewarding part of my time within the Engineering Academy has definitely been completing my Level 3 qualification, getting my certificates and being offered the progression to Level 4. On top of that, I really feel rewarded to be part of a team with a wide range of knowledge and skill, seeing the smiles on guests’ faces once they’ve been on a ride, knowing that I was a part of the team that got that particular ride or attraction working safely and efficiently.
“Before starting my apprenticeship, I had no engineering background – only IT experience – but through the Engineering Academy, I’ve gained invaluable skills, from interpreting technical diagrams to learning about more intricate engineering systems. For anyone considering an apprenticeship, my advice is simple: go for it. You’ve got nothing to lose and everything to gain. If you’re already an apprentice, don’t hesitate to ask questions – the more you ask, the more you’ll grow, and the better prepared you’ll be to tackle real-world challenges.”
One of the hallmarks of Merlin’s Engineering Academy is its close collaboration with industry leaders. The 2024 apprenticeship cohort will benefit from real-world case studies, internships and mentorship opportunities with established professionals in various sectors throughout Merlin’s U.K. attractions. This ensures that the curriculum remains aligned with the latest technological trends and that students are equipped to address real-world challenges from the start.
