Tampa, FL, USA (August 13, 2013) — Once every century, on precisely the thirteenth year, evil comes out to play. This fall, for 14 select nights, Howl-O-Scream 2013 returns to Busch Gardens Tampa with tormenting surprises around every corner and unexpected terrors.

Opening weekend for Howl-O-Scream 2013 is Friday and Saturday, Sept. 27 and 28.  The event then runs Thursday through Saturday nights, Oct. 3-5, 10-12, 17-19 and 24-26.  Operating hours are 7:30 p.m. to 1 a.m. on all event nights.

Busch Gardens’ 335 acres will be overgrown with dark, sinister, adult-targeted fun, including new haunted houses, scare zones, a thrilling live stage show and the chance to ride adrenaline-fueled coasters in the dark, including Florida’s first triple-launch coaster, Cheetah Hunt. Even the streets themselves aren’t safe with all-new scare zones, led by the 13 evils that have been waiting a century to come out and play for the most horrifying Howl-O-Scream ever.

From the depths of a basement to the eerie bogs of the Bayou, Howl-O-Scream 2013’s new haunted houses are designed to prey on every element of your deepest fears:

  • NEW! The BASEMENT—From Momma’s secret ingredient to Granny’s bone-ground flour, Momma’s Meats’ award-winning recipe has always been a family affair that’s only created in the BASEMENT. Escape the depths of the BASEMENT before she and #4 The Butcher turn you in to the secret sauce! She always said it took blood, sweat and tears!

  • NEW! Death Water Bayou—Deep in the bayou the #6 Voodoo Queen mystically transforms lost wanderers into her minions of evil with black magic. Here, her night servants roam with a zombie-like hunger and seek to grow her collection. The darkest evils lurk in shadows. Get out before you fall victim to her spell.
  • NEW! The Experiment—Researchers challenge your fear tolerance and mental endurance in this never-been-done-before Experiment. In this exclusive study, “test subjects” endure psychological tests and must face top fear-inducing elements, from roaches and snakes to needles and darkness. How far is too far in the study of fear? Will you survive The Experiment?  The Experiment is a unique, interactive experience that challenges your threshold for fear for an additional fee. Reservations are required, and each reservation can accommodate you and up to three additional “test subjects.” Pass member discount does not apply.  Not included with any other VIP tour or upgrade product.  Howl-O-Scream admission is required, but not included.  The Experiment admission is $50 for the first test subject and $10 for each additional test subject in the same reservation.

Some of the most demented houses ever are back by popular demand with some horrifying new twists:

  • ·Circus of Superstition 3-DYou’ve tried to avoid black cats and sidewalk cracks, but all those years of bad luck caught up with you! The #13 Clown challenges you to survive 13 superstitions in their 3-D Tent of Terror, but it will take more than luck to escape this whole new dimension of fear.
  • Blood AsylumAs lightning rages and thunder crashes outside, “The Creature” escapes from his holding cell in a high-security asylum for the criminally insane. Now this sadistic deviant is running rampant, skinning his former cellmates and turning the mental hospital into his own torture chamber. This serial killer’s bloody playground will drive you out of your mind with fear.
  • Zombie MortuaryNo one remembers how the epidemic started, but now, the #9 Zombie and his undead friends live here. They infest this small town funeral home and feed on the fresh flesh and brains of mortuary mourners to satisfy their insatiable hunger. Avoid the walking dead or you may find yourself deeper than six feet under.
  • Ultimate Gamble: Reversal of FortuneUnder sleek Vampire reign, the once-vibrant Ultimate Gamble casino glowed. Now werewolves have overthrown their mortal enemies and are running rampant in the casino. The carnivorous beasts have caught on to the scent of fresh blood inside the closed casino. Will you make it out alive before your luck runs out?
  • NevermoreBeating hearts, swinging pendulums and a raven’s cries haunt the manor of Lenore, creating a demented and twisted nightmare. Step inside to experience the gothic terror that maddens the lord of the house and feel delusion overcome reality. Find your way out of this horror story before paranoia authors your final chapter.

At Howl-O-Scream, even the sidewalks aren’t safe from the things that go bump in the night.

ALL-NEW scare zones will keep guests watching their backs as they explore 335 acres of fright:

  •  The 13Once every century, on precisely the thirteenth year, evil comes out to play. Thirteen evils, to be exact. The #7 Surgeon, #4 Butcher, #11 Psychopath, #13 Clown, #6 Voodoo Queen and their demented friends will torment and terrorize you the moment you enter the gates. This your chance to find out: Who are the 13?
  • Harvester’s HauntAn unnerving soundtrack of banjos, fiddles and harmonicas fill the fields with haunting bluegrass music. Something just doesn’t feel right. You realize you’re not alone when you discover a hoard of sadistic scarecrows. They’re looking to harvest a few lost souls. Will you escape their reach or be theirs forever?
  • Pain LaneTorture, torment and pain line this sinister street as the #2 Torturer and #12 Hangman stalk their prey in the shadows of this dark and disturbing alley. Here, pain-inducing devices are the toys of the twisted and screams are surrounded by haunting silence. Will you escape this playground of pain before the #2 Torturer and #12 Hangman find you?

After braving bone-chilling coasters in the dark, such as Cheetah Hunt, SheiKra, Montu, Gwazi and Kumba, you can catch your breath at Howl-O-Scream’s signature show, Fiends, or keep the party going all night in Howl-O-Scream’s signature club and shops.

  • Fiends—The classic monster mash-up Fiends will be performing nightly at the Desert Grill in Timbuktu. Captivating creatures of the night will infect you with dance fever and keep your pulse pounding with their deranged dance party. But when Dr. Freakenstein’s naughty nurses start operating, the diagnosis is always “code pink.”
  • Club 13—Escape the hordes and head to the transformed Marrakesh Theater to drive yourself mad partying at Howl-O-Scream’sdance club.  This nighttime dance playground keeps the energy pumping all night long with non-stop music, premium signature cocktails, drink specials and Taco Bus food.
  • ·Howl-O-Scream Shop of Horrors— This year, the Howl-O-Scream shop of Horrors has been transformed into The Butcher Shop. Find GOREgeous apparel and trendy tees featuring Howl-O-Scream favorites, including the 13 and the infamous Naughty Nurses.  You can also purchase or pick up your Front-Line Fear Passes here. Pixar’s Theme Park Gurus Liz Gazzano and Roger Gould to Speak at SATE’13

pixar

“The Themed Entertainment Association (TEA) proudly welcomes Liz Gazzano and Roger Gould of Pixar Animation Studios as featured speakers in the SATE ’13 Experience Design conference presented by Christie Oct 3-4 in Savannah, Georgia,” says TEA president Christine Kerr of BaAM Productions. “As innovators who played critical roles developing Pixar’s Cars into Disney’s Cars Land, Gazzano and Gould are helping create the future of our industry and well-positioned to address “What’s Next” in keeping with this year’s conference theme. When a great story becomes both a great film and a great theme park attraction, it touches all the SATE buttons: Storytelling, Architecture, Technology, Experience.”

20091027LizGazzano01Liz Gazzano is executive producer of Theme Parks at Pixar Animation Studios, where she works closely with the creative director of Theme Parks to oversee and extend the stories of Pixar characters and environments within a Disney Theme Park setting. Her most recently completed project is “Cars Land” at Disney’s California Adventure, which opened to the public on June 15, 2012. She has also worked on “Toy Story Playland” for Hong Kong Disneyland and Disneyland Paris Resort, “Toy Story Midway Mania” attraction for Tokyo Disneyland and “Undersea Magic Nemo Show” for Animators Palate Restaurants aboard the Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy Cruise Ships.

20111117RogerGould01Roger Gould is the Creative Director of Theme Parks at Pixar Animation Studios and works in deep collaboration with Walt Disney Imagineering in the creation of theme park attractions and lands inspired by Pixar’s films. His largest and most recent accomplishment in collaboration with Walt Disney Imagineering and Pixar’s Theme Parks team is the creation and opening of “Cars Land” at Disney’s California Adventure Park in Anaheim, California. “Cars Land” opened to the public on June 15, 2012.

“Gazzano and Gould will be at SATE ’13 to share insights and experiences about how Pixar collaborates with Walt Disney Imagineering to manifest Pixar films in theme parks and other attraction settings,” adds Kerr. “There are many industry lessons to be learned here, in areas such as branding, licensing, transmedia and how to maximize digital assets. There has long been a close, symbiotic relationship between film studios and theme parks, and now digital tools have enhanced the opportunities and the way projects are conceived. We invite all members of the visitor attractions industry to join us Oct 3-4 in Savannah for a fascinating and rewarding industry dialog.”

Commented SATE ’13 co-chair Stefan Lawrence of Stefan Rules!: “One thing we’ve been talking a lot about – and in particular with Pixar coming on board – is what the future of creative collaboration looks like. Increasingly, creatives and techs are working hand-in-hand to create the future of themed entertainment. A big theme with Pixar’s talk will be Pixar’s culture of collaboration and cross-pollination of ideas, and how to encourage that playful exchange of creativity in the way we work now. This is a big part of “What’s Next” as we’ve been developing our conference content.”
SCAD theater image

The “What’s Next” theme of SATE ’13 was partly inspired by the location, the Savannah College of Art & Design (SCAD) in Savannah, Georgia. SCAD offers substantial curricula in the field of Experience Design, with industry veterans such as George Head and Mike Devine on faculty and among the TEA leadership. “The affiliation between TEA and SCAD coupled with the acceleration of TEA’s NextGen initiative to actively foster recruitment of the next generation of industry professionals makes SCAD an ideal location for SATE ’13,” says TEA president Christine Kerr.Christine Kerr adds: “In discussion with conference co-chairs Aram Ebben and Stefan Lawrence about how SATE at SCAD could immerse us in an environment of future-thinking students, we decided to make the most of it with a “What’s Next” theme. “The conference will explore Storytelling, Architecture, Technology and Experience with a look at what’s coming and how it will shape content, be impacted by products and services, leverage tools and technologies, influence design and engage the next generation of guests.

“The last point is particularly important for designers and for owner/operators looking forward – how to entertain tech-savvy kids and their parents, hang on to the 18-34 year olds and engage the growing numbers of Baby Boomers who are retiring and looking for things to do in their leisure time; considering what’s “Next” for them, and how we engage them as “Next Generation” visitors.”

Banshee to Open at Kings Island in 2014 as World’s Longest Inverted Coaster

Kings Island, OH, USA — The longest inverted steel roller coaster in the world, “Banshee,” will make its debut at Kings Island in April of 2014.

The first female-inspired thrill ride at a Cedar Fair Entertainment Company amusement park, Banshee will send riders screaming through 4,124.1 feet of track and seven inversions at speeds up to 68 miles per hour during the 2-minute, 40-second ride.

Built over hilly terrain, the ride layout for Banshee is specifically designed for Kings Island and features several unique elements that distinguish it from other roller coasters.

The ride begins with a lift taking riders up to the maximum height of 167 feet. After plunging down 150 feet, riders will go through a curved drop, dive loop, looping interacting with the lift, zero-G-roll, batwing, outside loop, spiral, in-line roll and carousel.

Two of the most unique features about Banshee are the massive size of every loop, and unlike other roller coasters, the top speed isn’t reached until halfway through the ride’s course.

Since Banshee’s lift hill is on a higher elevation of terrain than the other side of the ride that goes down into a valley, the total elevation change is 208 feet from the highest point at the top of the lift hill to the lowest point, which is the bottom of the batwing between loops four and five.

Passengers will be seated in cars four across. A total of three trains, each containing eight cars, will enable Banshee to accommodate approximately 1,650 riders per hour.

“Banshee reflects our commitment to providing the best in world-class thrills and value for our guests and is an investment in the Ohio tourism industry,” Kings Island’s vice-president and general manager Greg Scheid said. “People from around the world will plan a visit to Ohio next summer specifically to experience this ride.”

Banshee will be the 15th roller coaster at Kings Island, which is home to some of the top-ranked roller coasters in annual industry and enthusiast polls including The Beast and Diamondback, and represents the biggest new product investment in the park’s 41-year history at $24 million.

Banshee was designed by Bolliger and Mabillard of Monthey, Switzerland, one of the premier leaders in roller coaster development. Since 1990, B&M have designed a number of ground-breaking and critically acclaimed roller coasters. In fact, B&M features 14 of the top 25 roller coasters on the Amusement Today Golden Ticket Awards Top Steel Roller Coasters list for 2012, five of which are listed in the top 10. They have more top-ranked steel roller coasters than any other ride manufacturer on the list.

B&M roller coasters are renowned for their smooth ride, comfortable seats and restraints, reliability, low maintenance, impeccable safety record and ride capacity.

As of 2013, B&M has more than 85 roller coasters operating worldwide, including Diamondback at Kings Island and this year’s sensation, GateKeeper at Cedar Point in Sandusky, Ohio.

The construction of Banshee is currently underway in the Action Zone area of Kings Island. Park visitors can see the ride being built from the ground up with great aerial views and photo opportunities available from the observation deck of the Eiffel Tower on International Street. Those who cannot wait until 2014 may take a virtual ride on Banshee at visitkingsisland.com/banshee.

Visitors to www.visitkingsisland.com/banshee may also access exclusive Banshee updates, virtual videos and renderings, ride statistics and more.

Pasadena, CA, USA (August 12, 2013) — York Pines, Inc., a development group representing the City of Sanford, Maine, has commissioned a feasibility study of the region to consider a major year-round tourist attraction as a catalyst for revitalization efforts.  Larry Wyatt, Principal of Wyatt Design Group, a theme park and leisure destination master planning and design firm, along with economic analyst Frederick Cochrane of Cochrane Consulting recently provided consultation on the prospect during a three-day workshop on location in Sanford.

Wyatt and Cochrane began the workshop with a helicopter tour of several heavily wooded sites as well as a tour of the City of Sanford, located just east of the popular beaches of southern Maine and roughly equidistant between Boston and Portland.   The goal was to identify the most appropriate components for a destination development that would capitalize on the region’s significant tourist market.   Wyatt and Cochrane led the three-day workshop that was attended by representatives of local stakeholders, Sanford’s City Manager, State of Maine’s Senior Tourism Officer, Commissioner of Economic Development, and Governor Paul LePage, who gave the project his administration’s full support.

umpjUIPxwFq2SRf6EJVYjxXlTgNA8Q3goASSAdjwwb4The planning team presented it’s preliminary recommendations to the local economic restructuring committee of Sanford Downtown Legacy, whose mission is to redevelop the Mousam Waterfront, Sanford Downtown and the historic mills area into a thriving, energetic, commercial, social, cultural, residential and entertainment destination through economic restructuring and historic preservation..

Larry Wyatt, one of the industry’s leading master planning and design experts, has developed and designed numerous large-scale theme parks and leisure destinations around the world for clients including Warner Bros., Paramount Studios, Universal Studios, Legoland, Busch Gardens and SeaWorld theme parks, and leisure destinations in Asia, Egypt, Korea, Morocco, China and the United States.

Fred Cochrane has produced feasibility studies for resorts and theme parks including: Snowmass at Aspen, Northstar at Tahoe, Sentosa Island -Singapore, Kapalua – Maui, Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom – Orlando, Elitch Gardens – Denver, Knott’s Berry Farm – Buena Park, and many others over a 40 year career.

ZdmZ4FiAJh0ApA8TkFr2KFu9xpn7Hi9_uG-RTUncj0sThe completed feasibility study will identify which types of tourist attractions will most likely succeed in revitalizing the city of Sanford and increase tourism in the Southern Maine region and a strategy for implementation. “We are very pleased to be included in this exciting process for Southern Maine,” says Wyatt. “Working with Fred and the York Pines group this past week, we have the begun the vision for the ideal Maine destination.  Our next steps will refine that vision into a creative, exciting concept that embraces current trends in leisure travel and complements the State of Maine’s tourism’s mission to become the premier four-season destination in New England.  Fred’s economic analysis will assure that the concept is feasible and attractive to investors and developers.”   Maine’s top industry is tourism with 28 million visitors annually and gross receipts towering $2.6 billion. “Tourism can provide a way for Sanford to get moving again.” states steering committee member Allen Mapes, as reported in the Sanford News.

Copenhagen’s Historic Tivoli Celbrates 170 Years of Operation August 17

Hovedindgangen i aftenlys 2

Copenhagen, Denmark — Denmark’s greatest tourist attraction, Tivoli in Copenhagen, has been providing entertainment for nearly 170 years. A merry-go-round and a roller coaster were the two rides Tivoli offered in 1843, when the gates opened to the public for the very first time. Now, in 2013, there are 27 rides, including the brand new “Aquila” where you can experience 4 G forces. “Tivoli will never be finished,” said its founder, and change has always been part of The Gardens. On 15 August, Tivoli turns 170 years old.

Tivoli plays host to over 300 concerts each year and has approximately 30 eateries; it has become a world brand that tourists are prepared to travel for. Tivoli is the world’s only company quoted on the stock exchange which has its own symphony orchestra. The amusement park also has a green profile, which includes electricity from wind turbines and a “no thank you” policy towards disposable cups.

Tivoli c 1850 Danske Billeder

When you stand on The Open Air Stage, you can feel the history of the place and sense founder Georg Carstensen’s original vision of what an amusement park should offer. The green park, with zigzagalleen’s (the zig-zag alley’s) old linden trees, is a prominent feature. There is a variety of moving rides, from the old Ferris Wheel to the new Star Flyer. The music and theatre scenes are represented on The Open Air Stage, which today is the venue for Fredagsrock (Friday Rock), and at Glassalen (The Glass Hall Theatre) where artists like Marlene Dietrich, Swe-Danes and the Mills Brothers have performed. Finally there are the cafes and restaurants, which were a part of the original concept and which continue to tempt Tivoli’s guests.

However, in the same way that pantalettes for girls and sailor suits for boys, which were popular back in 1843, have been replaced on the fashion scene, Tivoli has also modernised its facilities. New additions to the park include exciting rides like Aquila, which reaches forces of 4 G, food from distant corners of the world, and music that requires electronic amplification. It is precisely the ability to incorporate new trends which may be the reason why Tivoli has survived for 170 years.

Det Muntre Hjoerne

Tivoli’s CEO, Lars Liebst, says: ”If I were to describe what Tivoli is, then I would have to say it is diverse. Tivoli has always been for everyone. We must continue to live up to the expectations of our guests and, at the same time, provide them with such a positive and thrilling experience that they recommend others to visit Tivoli. We bear the heritage of Georg Carstensen’s ideas, and we remember his words that Tivoli will never be finished.”

And Lars Bernhard Jørgensen, CEO, Wonderful Copenhagen, says: “With its unique location in the town centre, a fantastic and colourful history, as well as its proven ability to constantly evolve with the needs and demands of the time, Tivoli categorically represents the cornerstone of Copenhagen’s experience industry. A Copenhagen without Tivoli would be a noticeably different tourist product, and I would like to congratulate The Gardens and all its guests and employees on this birthday celebration.”
