Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy Turns to Cinnabar For Two Leading Edge Visitor Centers

All photos courtesy Cinnabar

San Francisco, USA — Cinnabar Inc., exhibit producer, artisan and fabricator, collaborated with design firm Macchiatto to create the educational exhibits and retail fixtures for two new visitor centers that opened this spring: Lands End Lookout and Golden Gate Bridge Pavilion, both projects of the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy.

Inside the Golden Gate Bridge Pavilion, design motifs and colors echo the celebrated span.

Rather than relegate exhibits and retail to separate areas, the visitor centers blend the two, creating unique, accessible, and educational destinations, which San Francisco Chronicle writer John King described as “learning and commerce both geared to the locale.” Fabrication emphasized the use of sustainable, reclaimed and recycled materials, and a fast-track, design/build methodology.

Cinnabar CEO Jonathan Katz says, “We are pleased to add Lands End Lookout Visitor Center and the Golden Gate Bridge Pavilion to Cinnabar’s museum portfolio and our body of work in the San Francisco Bay Area. The museum/retail hybrid can bring greater attendance and a wider demographic than a traditional interpretive exhibit. We applaud the Conservancy and designer Jeremy Regenbogen of Macchiatto for their vision. “

“Clouds” at Lands End Lookout are of laser-etched cardboard

Cinnabar is no stranger to iconic projects in the Bay Area – the company also produced the exhibits for the Kimball Museum of Natural History at the new California Academy of Sciences.

Lands End Lookout
Situated on Point Lobos at the main entrance to the California Coastal Trail at Lands End, the visitor center includes 1,200 square feet of display space, with information about the area’s cultural and natural history, and resources for hikers.

Interactive displays and interpretive items, precision-crafted by Cinnabar, engage visitors in the story of the area.

The fortune telling machine at Lands End Lookout

Overhead, suspended “clouds” of corrugated cardboard are laser-etched with custom graphics; a fortune telling machine has magnetic flip-cards, printed with memorable local photos and “fortunes,” that spin around before settling back to lie flush with the tabletop; mounted between sheets of Lexan and illuminated by the huge picture windows are illustrations of the Yelamu Ohlone culture and historical photos of the Sutro Baths and Cliff House; and the “Leave your Voice” interactive encourages visitors to write feedback on cards that are later integrated into the display.

Golden Gate Bridge Pavilion
Marking the 75th anniversary of the Golden Gate Bridge, the 3,500-square-foot Bridge Pavilion, located in the Golden Gate Bridge Toll Plaza, features a model of the Bridge tower and is filled with Bridge-related merchandise as well as detailed information and history.

Golden Gate Bridge Pavilion: studded with some 1300 threaded rivets custom-cast by Cinnabar to imitate the rivets of the bridge.

The built environment evokes the history, the physical surroundings, and the structure of the celebrated span itself. The walls are studded with some 1300 threaded rivets custom-cast by Cinnabar to imitate the rivets of the bridge. Cinnabar enforced an exacting color matching process to consistently duplicate the bridge’s signature International Orange over a wide range of materials, surfaces and treatments.

Fast-track design/build process
Both visitors centers were built on a fast track using a collaborative design/build process in which the fabricator and producer are involved from the early stages of a project while the design is still fluid. Cinnabar’s background is in building sets for cinema and broadcast, where design/build is customary, and Katz is a leading proponent of it for the museum sector. “Design/build keeps you on schedule and on budget while upholding quality and the design vision,” comments Katz. “It’s a balance of goals and practical requirements that plays to the strengths of the creative team.”

Macchiatto’s Jeremy Regenbogen says, “Often value engineering comes at the end of the project, where difficult sacrifices must be made. Cinnabar’s early involvement meant that we could constantly bounce ideas off them and keep the intent of the design intact.”

Regenbogen adds, “Cinnabar’s broad reaching, in-house expertise in media integration, graphic production techniques, metal fabrication and traditional cabinetry really helped keep the fabrication process efficient and without surprises. Cinnabar matched the design intent exactly, with an incredibly unified look. Whenever we had a thought about how a complex element might be constructed, we discussed it in great detail with one of their experts relevant to the fabrication method we were discussing. We were able to really push the limits of constructability and utilize some nontraditional building materials, making for a truly unique finished product.”

Busch Gardens Tampa Bay Prepares to Transform into Christmas Town

0

Tampa, FL, USA — Busch Gardens Tampa is getting ready to launch the biggest Christmas celebration in park history.  Christmas Town will transform the park into a nighttime holiday wonderland, filling guests’ senses with seasonal sights, sounds and flavors, and creating a new tradition for Tampa’s families.

For the first time in the park’s 53-year history, visitors to Christmas Town will experience all-new evening attractions, shows and shopping from 6 to 11 p.m. every Friday, Saturday and Sunday night, Nov. 30 through Dec. 23.

Busch Gardens expects that even its most familiar fans will barely recognize the portions of the park that convert to Christmas Town through special entertainment, live music, festive treats, holiday shopping and thousands and thousands of twinkling Christmas lights:

  • Celebration Village brings together the colors of Christmas and voices lifted in song to welcome guests as they enter Christmas Town. Draped in jewel-tone ornaments and glowing lights, the Moroccan Village comes alive with local choirs in the Marrakesh Theater and shops full of holiday gifts.
  • The frozen Ice Wonder Way sparkles and shimmers in the night as snowflakes dance down the front of the Moroccan Palace, welcoming guest for special performances of the all-new Christmas Town ice show.
  • Wild colors, exotic decorations and intricate animal patterns create a kind of Christmas celebrating nature. Stretching along the Cheetah Hunt walkway, Jungle Jubilee welcomes guests to Florida’s only triple-launch coaster and the iconic Crown Colony restaurant, featuring special holiday fare and the new Carol of the Bells light show.
  • Just around the bend, Candy Cane Lane gives Christmas Town a peppermint twist. Red and white lights twinkle in the trees throughout the Nairobi area, calling to mind the beloved Christmas confection and pointing guests down the path to the Christmas Town Express and Santa’s House.
  • Experience the humble magnificence of that first Christmas night and remember the real “reason for the season” along Miracle Way, featuring a topiary representation of the Holy Nativity and illuminated angels, set along the Stanleyville Bridge surrounded by Christmas lights and sacred holiday music.
  • Christmas has come to Sesame Street. Elmo and his friends are all dressed up in their holiday best at Sesame Street Season of Fun, ready to pose for pictures and plenty of hugs with kids of all ages who stop by to wish them a funny, furry Christmas.
  • Celebrate a Floridian Christmas with a touch of the tropics in the Enchanted Flamingo Valley. Guests will be “thinking pink” as they encounter decorated palm trees and a flock of festive flamingos created from thousands of twinkling pink lights.
  • Christmas is in full bloom along Poinsettia Parkway, where guests can lose themselves among hundreds of the traditional holiday flowers and feast their senses on delicious holiday treats.
  • At Jingle Bell Junction, guests can climb aboard a pint-sized train for a ride designed especially for young guests, located at the crossroads of Christmas Town in Gwazi Plaza.
  • >Guests can find holiday gifts or indulge in a seasonal treat as they explore Christmas Town Village. Set along the Gwazi Park walkway, tiny Christmas cabins will scent the air with seasonal treats like apple pies and strudels, gingerbread cookies, eggnog and roasting nuts, as well as a delicious array of flavored popcorns, roasted nuts, waffles with ice cream, fruit-filled crepes, rustic sandwiches, homemade potato chips and Starbucks coffees and hot chocolate.
  • In Christmas Town Park, guests can experience real, frozen snowdrifts in the Snow Wonderland snow play area, meander among quaint cabin shops, pose for pictures with strolling snowmen, and finish off the night with an exclusive concert with the Grammy Award-winning group Jars of Clay.

And while Christmas Town will offer guests the opportunity to ride some of Busch Gardens’ most popular roller coasters, including Cheetah Hunt, SheiKra and Gwazi, the special event will also offer some equally special rides and attractions exclusive to the nighttime experience:

  • All aboard the Christmas Town Express for a Christmas carol sing-along.  Guests are invited join in singing traditional songs of the season like “Jingle Bells,” “Frosty the Snowman” and “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” while circling the park on a beautifully lit vintage-style steam locomotive.
  • The Claus family invites you into their North Pole home at Welcome to Santa’s House. While the elves are busy preparing for Christmas, Mrs. Claus is in the kitchen baking holiday treats, but even Santa himself will take a break from his busy holiday schedule to meet and take photos with families in his private study.
  • Straight from the South Pole, the Christmas Town Penguins have brought a bit of ice and snow all the way to Florida.  Enjoy these dapper little creatures and marvel at their underwater antics at the penguin habitat, located near Candy Cane Lane in the Nairobi area.

Guests who have come to love Busch Gardens’ traditional holiday shows will still be able to see Christmas on Ice, Christmas from the Heart and Christmas Celebration during the day. But at Christmas Town, new shows and surprise guests who will provide a very special evening of family-friendly entertainment:

  • Busch Gardens’ Crown Colony House restaurant sets the stage for a “ballet” of music and light each night under the stars. The Carol of the Bells features tens of thousands of Christmas lights covering the façade of the building, set in motion to a choreographed presentation of stirring seasonal songs.
  • World-class skaters will bring to life favorite Christmas songs both traditional and contemporary, in an all-new snow-inspired ice show, produced especially for Christmas Town by the creators of Christmas on Ice and Iceploration.
  • Jimmy Osmond’s Christmas Jukebox features Jimmy Osmond and his family singing favorite Christmas tunes and sharing special holiday memories each night in the Stanleyville Theater. Busch Gardens is joining Jimmy in his work with the Children’s Miracle Network, and will be making a donation to local Tampa Bay-area kids in need.
  • Grammy Award-winning contemporary Christian artists Jars of Clay will provide the finale each evening with an exclusive concert in Gwazi Park, performing both original hits and holiday favorites.

For those who can’t wait to get their night at Christmas Town started, guests are invited to pull up a chair at Mrs. Claus’ Family Feast for a special evening filled with stories, songs, a delicious buffet of traditional holiday fare, plenty of opportunities for holiday hugs and photos with Mrs. Claus and her favorite elves, and exclusive no-wait access to Welcome to Santa’s House and Snow Wonderland after dinner.

“When Christmas Town opens in November, it will be the beginning of a unique holiday tradition for Tampa Bay area,” says Jim Dean, Busch Gardens Tampa’s park president. “We are creating a season-long celebration for family and friends unlike any other event our guests have ever seen – the kind of Christmas fun only Busch Gardens can provide.”

Similar to the park’s popular Halloween event, Christmas Town will be a separate-ticketed night event, and regular daytime admission is not required or included. San Diego, CA, USA (July 12, 2012) —  Comic-con, the world’s largest conference for comics, and science fiction/fantasy genre films, televisions, and games, opens today at the San Diego Convention Center.  More than 125,000 attendees are expected at the event, including themed entertainment designers seeking out the newest IP, which includes 460,000 square feet of exhibits, hundreds of presentations in over twenty venues, and a monster/heavy metal-themed party at Petco Park, which normally is home field for baseball’s San Diego Padres.

Among those rumored to make an appearance are June Foray.  This past October, she became the latest recipient of the Comic-Con Icon Award. The award was given to the “first lady of cartoon voices” as part of The Scream Awards last October, telecast on the SPIKE cable network.

Ms. Foray is the voice of such pop culture icons as Rocky the Flying Squirrel and his nemesis Natasha Fatale on Rocky & Bullwinkle, Nell Fenwick on Dudley Do-Right, Granny on Tweety & Sylvester, Aunt May on Spider-Man and his Amazing Friends, and Ursula on George of the Jungle, just to name a few of her thousands of animated cartoon credits. Her recent biography, Did You Grow Up With Me, Too? tells the story of how she became one of the true superstars of voice-acting. In addition, Ms. Foray has also been an important part of Comic-Con International over the past four decades, appearing at the event numerous times since her first appearance in 1973.  Last month, she become the oldest person on record to win an Emmy Award, her first.

Ms. Foray has reprised a number of her animated roles for theme park attractions, including Roger Rabbit’s Car Toon Spin at Disneyland and Dudley Do-Right’s Ripsaw Falls at Islands of Adventure, along with original properties such as Pirates of the Caribbean.

Comic-Con’s Icon Award is presented to individuals or organizations who have been instrumental in bringing comics and/or the popular arts to a wider audience. Ms. Foray’s large body of work has placed her squarely in the realm of pop culture greats. She joins an impressive list of past Icon Award recipients, who include Frank Miller (2006), Neil Gaiman (2007), George Lucas (2008), Stan Lee (2009), and Ray Bradbury (2010).

Savio, Italy and Santa Claus, Indiana, USA — Divertical, a watercoaster modification of Holiday World’s Pilgrim’s Plunge, opened June 16 at Mirablilandia in Savio, Italy.  Both attractions are built around Intamin’s Hyper Splash design, a dual elevator lift on a single vertical tower, which places riders into position for their descent from a height of 131 feet for Pilgrim’s Plunge and 197 for Divertical.  From the tower, boats drop at a 45 degree angle.  While the ride ends on Pilgrim’s Plunge with a splashdown after a 50 mph descent, Divertical’s riders return to the air at 62 mph for a coaster trip leading to a second splashtown, as illustrated in the following photo and video by Robb Alvey, taken during a June 2012 Theme Park Review trip to Mirabilandia, and reprinted here with permission.  Divertical was built at a cost of $26 million by the park’s owner, Parques Reunidos.

Meanwhile, a Summer drought has caused Holiday World to make changes to their regular operating schedule.  In addition to cancelling Fourth of July fireworks, the park decided to comply with level 1 water restrictions by voluntarily closing Pilgram’s Plunge on July 1.  Water was rerouted to the adjoining Splashin’ Safari waterpark, included with admission, where the park’s newest attraction, the ProSlide designed Mammoth hydromagnetic watercoaster, has been entertaining guests since May.  After the five day shutdown, the $4.3 million Pilgrim’s Plunge reopened to the public on July 6.

Two Travel Channel Shows Featuring Holiday World Attractions This Week

0

Santa Claus, IN, USA — For the second time this week, a ride at Holiday World will be featured on a new show on the Travel Channel.

The Voyage will be among four wooden roller coasters on Sunday’s episode of “Insane Coaster Wars.” A production crew from Travel Channel visited Holiday World for two days in early May to shoot footage of Voyage and the park.

Voyage has been voted the #1 Wooden Roller Coaster on the Planet every year since 2007. This 1.2-mile coaster offers more “air time” than any other wooden coaster in the world. Voyage was featured in the “Wood Takes a Thrilling Turn” cover story of last week’s New York Times’ science section.

In advance of the show, fans were encouraged to vote for their favorite wooden coaster last month on Travel Channel’s website; the winning coaster will be announced at the end of the “Splintering Speedsters” episode, which premieres Sunday, July 15, at 7:00pm CT. It will air again next Thursday, Friday and Sunday.

Meanwhile, Holiday World’s Pilgrims Plunge is included in an episode of “Xtreme Water Parks” airing on the Travel Channel at 9:30pm CT on Thursday, July 12, and again at 1:30pm CT on Saturday, July 14. Pilgrims Plunge, the world’s tallest water ride, is a classic “shoot the chute” ride, featuring an open-air elevator which lift boats filled with riders 135 feet in the air.

An August episode of “Xtreme Water Parks” will include the park’s two water coasters, Wildebeest and Mammoth.

The Travel Channel is available in nearly 96 million U.S. households.

Universal and Loews Bringing Fourth Resort Hotel to Universal Orlando

0

Orlando, FL, USA (July 9, 2012) — Universal Parks & Resorts and Loews Hotels & Resorts will build a new hotel development at Universal Orlando that will add high-quality, high-value options for families wanting an affordable on-site experience.

Universal’s Cabana Bay Beach Resort will offer two distinct experiences within the development’s multiple buildings: 900 family suites, capable of sleeping six, that include kitchen areas and 900 standard guest rooms – offering both moderate- and value-priced accommodations. It will be operated by Loews Hotels & Resorts and is scheduled to open in 2014.

The hotel will be themed differently than anything else currently available at Universal Orlando. It will evoke the driving vacations so many Americans grew up enjoying with their families – spending time at sweeping motor courts just off the highway, where families relaxed and played after a long day’s drive. The new hotel’s hip, vintage look will be accented with bold design, dramatic, clean lines, bright, period colors and touches of neon. Inside areas including the lobby, dining areas and large, comfortable rooms will follow suit. The hotel will have two themed pool areas.

“Our new hotel will give guests an affordable, incredibly themed on-site hotel experience unlike anything else at our resort,” said Tom Williams, chairman and chief executive officer, Universal Parks & Resorts. “Our new family suites and family-value pricing will give our guests on-site options they’ve never had before.”

The hotel will be built on a 37-acre site within Universal Orlando Resort and adjacent to Universal’s Islands of Adventure – just off Hollywood Way and Turkey Lake Road. Site work will begin soon. Pricing information, opening timeframes and room on-sale dates will be released over time.

The new hotel will allow families to choose between value pricing or the higher level of benefits and service that come with staying at other on-site Universal Orlando hotels – Loews Portofino Bay Hotel, the Hard Rock Hotel and Loews Royal Pacific Resort. It will provide early park admission, proximity to Universal’s Islands of Adventure and Universal Studios and resort-wide charging privileges – but will not offer complimentary Universal Express Unlimited Access.

“The Cabana Bay Beach Resort furthers our goal of operating special and distinct properties in important markets,” said Paul Whetsell, Loews Hotels & Resorts president and CEO. “This is another important step in our plan to expand the Loews system in major markets across the United States.”

About Universal Orlando Resort
There are many ways to enjoy your Orlando vacation, but there is only one place where vacation becomes adventure: Universal Orlando Resort. It is a unique destination featuring two theme parks, three magnificently themed on-site hotels and a nighttime entertainment complex.
