International Polar Bear Conservation Centre Opens Today in Winnipeg

PROJECT FIRST PHASE OF $26 MILLION JOURNEY TO CHURCHILL THEMED EXPERIENCE, DESIGNED BY THEA AND AZA AWARD WINNER PORTICO GROUP

Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada (January 23, 2012) — The International Polar Bear Conservation Centre, which will care for orphaned, injured, and problem polar bears, opens today at Assiniboine Park Zoo.  The modern new facility is a key component of the new Journey to Churchill exhibit currently under construction at the Zoo as part of the Assiniboine Park Conservancy’s overall $200 million redevelopment plan.

Journey to Churchill, designed by Portico Group, is one of the most comprehensive projects ever undertaken in Canada aimed at issues related to climate change, polar bears and other northern species.  This fully integrated initiative combines elements focused on research conservation, education and public display to provide a venue that will bring the North to mainstream Canadians while bridging the gap between field research, the conservation world and the general public.

When complete, Journey to Churchill will feature polar bears – as well as other species – in three distinctive zones along the fascinating 10-acre route.  In each zone, visitors will experience a variety of landscapes and animal viewing areas.  Interpretive signage, interactive displays, and audio-visual components will reinforce the messages of biodiversity, climate change and conservation.  The Zoo describes each zone in the exhibit as follows:

Zone One: Wapusk Lowlands
Visitors head from the prairies through the boreal forest, where they will see moose, black bears, whooping cranes and gray wolves, and head north to the expanse of the tundra.  With the sound of the wind in their ears, they round a corner and see the snowy owls, while caribou stand alert on a hill behind them.  To their left, arctic foxes play in the grasslands while musk ox graze on the rise above and higher still, the first glimpse of the mighty polar bear.  With no visible barriers between the species, visitors will experience the vastness of the tundra.  Interpretive content will describe the age, scale, fragility, and beauty of the tunda and the many species that depend on it.

Zone Two: Gateway to the Arctic
The Gateway to the Arctic will be a primary viewing point for polar bears and ringed seals.  Interpretive media helps visitors learn about physiological adaptations to life on and under the sea ice.  From inside a 10 foot wide acrylic tunnel, visitors will be provided the rare opportunity to view these creatures from below the surface of the water.  The large swimming area provides physical exercise and a place to frolic and dart between the ice chunks.  With only a clear wall bisecting the two species habitats, the polar bears and seals see and smell each other, creating a dynamic and enriching environment.  This interaction between the seals and polar bears will be part of what puts this exhibit at the forefront of arctic zoo experiences.

The domed Aurora Borealis Theatre will be a place of wonder and awe.  With the play of the northern lights above and the encircling wall projecting a 360 degree horizon, visitors will appear to stand in a vast expanse of Arctic landscape.  Through a short film, they watch the Arctic’s seasonal beauty unfold and learn about the people, plants and animals that live in Canada’s northland.  After hours, the theatre becomes a dramatic backdrop for storytelling or concerts.

Zone Three: Churchill Coast
By their very nature, parks are places where families and friends can come together to have fun, celebrate important occasions, or just relax and take time out.  This immense social value is part of the “glue” of a healthy society.  The Churchill Coast brings all of these elements together in the culmination of the Journey to Churchill.

With a façade resembling the town of Churchill, visitors will feel as though they have been transported to the northern frontier.  The landscape will include bear dens that can shelter a bear on a hot summer’s day, or house a mother bear with her new cubs.  Visitors can watch the bears from the Tundra Grill, a 150-seat restaurant, while they enjoy their lunch.  The adjacent Polar Playground is designed to engage children in a polar-themed wonderland of active participation.

Journey to Churchill is scheduled to be completed in October 2013.

The Chuck Jones Experience: A Review

0

by Christopher Kirkman
When people talk about animation, they are often pulled to two very distinct ends of the spectrum: either animation is an amazing and reverential art form, or cartoons are just for kids. But when one walks into The Chuck Jones Experience, a unique interactive exhibit dedicated to one of the masters of animated films, I was captivated by the chronicles of an amazingly talent animator, and dizzy with the memories of antics from a certain rabbit and duck.
In other words, I was really excited. As a writer, I occasionally get to visit some exciting venues and meet celebrities, but Chuck Jones is something of an inspirational hero of mine and to visit this new exhibit AND have Jones’ grandson, Craig Kausen, be our personal guide was something of a dream come true

Charles M. Jones helped to create some of Warner Bros. Studio’s most famously known film stars. His legacy is lovingly and passionately presented here as a fitting addition to the family attractions inside the Circus Circus Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. Even before entering, visitors are treated to several interactive gags, straight out of the Acme archives: giant spinning tops, a pair of spring shoes and an inviting “Do Not Pull” sign on a box of fireworks. Anyone who has visited Toon Town at Disneyland or Disneyworld will find some familiarity with aspects of the exhibit, but with a different flavor.
After picking up tickets at a booth that looks like it was pulled from one of Chuck’s animated shorts, visitors enter through a dark hall whose walls are inscribed with quotes from the artist. Emerging into the light, guests are instantly immersed into the cartoon world of Jones’ mind, a street comprised of brightly colored sign posts and store fronts owned and operated by familiar characters. A stylized movie theater gives guests a brief history of Jones’ life and his characters.

Exiting the theater, guests will get the unique opportunity to view a recreation of Jones’ office, complete with a portion of his actual library and the desk on which he drew key sequences for How The Grinch Stole Christmas on. The walls are adorned with original sketches and a few awards Jones earned during his career, excluding his four Academy Awards. A “window” to the outside world occasionally treats viewers to characters lounging on the sill or walking down the street. This may just be a re-creation of Jones’ office, but there is something of a tangible magic about it that you wouldn’t find in a regular museum.
Past the office, the tour enters into a character-centric room with sketches and a “How do you measure up” display, but Jones’ creations really come to life as you round the corner into a cartoon soundstage. Daffy Duck directs Wile E. Coyote and the Roadrunner as Bugs Bunny operates the camera in a life sized 3D re-creation of a Jones piece entitled “Lights, Camera, Action!”. Guests can take their mark on the X, just below Wile E.’s anvil, if they dare.

In the final rooms of the tour, visitors pass through a hall with a giant video wall on one side, featuring many classic moments from dozens of films, and on the other wall a timeline of the 300 plus titles Jones directed during his career. As guests step into the light, a cornucopia of interactive demonstrations await kids of all ages. Bring your own drawings to life using pencil, paper and a zoetrope – a slotted wheel that, when spun, make individual sketches come to life. Or take a turn at the foley station where guests lend their voices, claps, clicks, pops and whatever other sound they can conjure to a famous Looney Tunes moment.
The Chuck Jones Experience is a unique opportunity to learn more about a talented artist in a very entertaining way. Sketches, photos and paintings are found throughout the exhibit and many, including the last, unfinished commissioned piece Jones ever painted, have never been viewable by the public until now. But this isn’t JUST about Chuck.
Plenty of other artists are represented here too. Mickey Mouse, Tom & Jerry, even Spongebob Squarepants adorn the walls of the gallery because, after all, this is about the world of animation at the end of the day. guests who want to see if they have what it takes can bring their own drawings to life at The Chuck Jones Center for Creativity, where short classes in basic animation are taught by visiting animators in a classroom adjacent to the Experience’s gift shop.
It was Jones himself who said “The rules are simple. Take your work, but never yourself, seriously. Pour in the love and whatever skill you have, and it will come out.” The Chuck Jones Experience is filled with that love, and will undoubtedly be filled with those who love the characters Mr. Jones helped bring to life.
The Chuck Jones Experience opened January 19th, 2012 in a brand new 10,000 square foot expanse inside the Circus Circus Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, NV. Admission is $19.95 for adults, $14.95 for children 5-17 years and free to children aged 4 and under.

Cape Canaveral, FL, USA (January 21, 2012) — The Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex announced today that through January 31, guests on the KSC Up Close Tour will have the rare opportunity to view both space shuttles Atlantis and Endeavour inside the Vehicle Assembly Building (VAB).  At almost 53 stories, the VAB is one of the largest buildings on the planet.  Originally designed for the Apollo missions to the moon, the VAB was later modified to prepare the space shuttles for launch.

The shuttles are in the VAB as part of a transfer process to and from the Orbiter Processing Facility, where they are being decommissioned and prepped for exhibition.  When their new homes are complete, Atlantis will be headed to a $100 million facility at the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex scheduled to open in 2013.  Endeavour will be flown to Los Angeles at the end of 2012, where it will become the centerpiece of the new Air and Space Center at the California Science Center in Exposition Park.  Meanwhile, the Smithsonian Institution’s National Air & Space Museum announced yesterday that “NASA will soon be announcing when it will deliver the Space Shuttle Discovery to the Museum.”  Discovery will go on display at the Museum’s Udvar-Hazy Center, located at Dulles International Airport in Chantilly, VA.  It will be replacing the shuttle test vehicle Enterprise, which will be flown to its new home at New York’s Intrepid Air-Space-Sea Museum this summer.

In addition to the shuttles headed to their respective museums, the Museum of Flight in Seattle received ownership from NASA on January 19, 2012 of the Full Fuselage Trainer, a full-scale mockup of the space shuttle used for systems testing and astronaut training.  The trainer will be partitioned and flown in five or six flights from Houston to Seattle on the only remaining Super Guppy in operation.  The Trainer is scheduled to open to the public mid-June.

Williamsport, MD, USA — The Year of the Dragon came early to the Bellagio’s Conservatory & Botanical Gardens which feature a colorful display replete with animatronic dragons to welcome the Chinese New Year. Look Solutions’ TINY FX fogger enhances the magical atmosphere, which captivates Las Vegas visitors of all ages.

Over 22,000 flowers were used to create this year’s display, which includes a towering red pagoda, a pair of 25-foot blue animatronic dragons coiled around a cylinder of water as they pursue a huge red pearl suspended above them, and four additional 15-foot animatronic dragons surrounded by bridges, red silk Chinese lanterns, a gazebo and a pile of I-Ching coins. The practice of Feng Shui was employed to position the flow of water in the display.

“Everything in the display is larger than life; they’re all big props,” says Tina Rath of 4Wall Entertainment, a bicoastal full-service lighting company specializing in entertainment lighting systems. “This year some of the props look like burning incense, which we have created by using Look Solutions’ TINY fogger. The fogger’s size made it the perfect choice for incense effects in the tableau.”

Truly small in its footprint, the lightweight TINY FX consists of just two components: the machine and its battery pack. According to Look Solutions, “It delivers efficiency and punch in a unit that’s easy to use anywhere.

“The TINY has been working great in the Bellagio display,” Rath reports. “We have been happy with Look Solutions products and use the Unique2 hazer for other applications.”

Troy Eckerman of Chroma Designs Inc. in Spring, Texas was the lighting designer for the Chinese New Year display.

Lighting Designer Paul Turner Chooses Prelite Studios For Radio City Christmas Spectacular Theater Shows in Boston and Durham

Courtesy MSG Holdings/Durham Performing Arts Center

San Francisco, CA, USA — Before the 2011 Radio City Christmas Spectacular opened in Boston and Durham, North Carolina, lighting designer Paul Turner partnered with Prelite Studios to preprogram the lighting for everyone’s favorite holiday shows.

The most recent company of the Christmas Spectacular transitioned from being arena-based productions to traditional theatrical presentations. Boston’s Radio City Christmas Spectacular was staged at the Citi Performing Arts Center – Wang Theater and the Durham show at the Durham Performing Arts Center (DPAC).

“Since we were no longer in arenas we were starting from scratch with a new hang and a new lighting console,” says Turner. So he joined Prelite’s Rodd McLaughlin in a rehearsal space in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina about ten days prior to the load-in at DPAC to previsualize the two versions of the show based on their new staging requirements.

McLaughlin, who served as Turner’s lighting programmer for the Christmas Spectaculars, notes that lighting for the shows was designed with two venues in mind. “Fixture placement and trim heights were kept as consistent as possible, and we programmed using X, Y, Z coordinates (i.e., 3D space) to ease the transition between locations: If we needed to make changes onsite we just updated where the lights were in the console and the presets would automatically update themselves,” he explains.

Turner’s moving lighting complement, which was based on the original theater design of Radio City’s lighting designer of record David Agress, featured Martin MAC III Performances front of house and MAC 2000 Profiles and MAC 700 washes overstage. A traditional theater front of house hang of conventional fixtures rounded out the design. Two grandMA consoles were networked together for lighting control.

Working with Prelite enabled Turner to turn off the scenic elements as needed, making them invisible at times to better see what the lights were doing. “We used Autodesk 3ds Max to model the scenery and set up the previs. We then used our own custom scripts to quickly export that data to grandMA 3D,” McLaughlin explains. “We continued to use previs throughout the process even when we had the real lights as we were able to ‘see’ behind curtains that were brought in or when the carpenters were working on another scene. Resolving the flips that occur when using X,Y,Z was considerably easier when we could see the rig from above without the legs and borders in the way.”

Jeff Capitola was the producer of the Radio City Christmas Spectaculars with Gary Memi serving as the onsite producer. Brenda Gray was associate lighting designer and Devon Allen assistant lighting designer.

The time between the Christmas Spectacular shows in Durham and Boston found Turner again teaming with Prelite. “We had a Prelite mobile system for two days to preprogram Mary J. Blige’s show at Club Nokia in LA as part of the American Express Unstaged live-streamed concert series in partnership with VEVO and YouTube,” he says. Mike Baldassari was the TV lighting designer for the show with Turner acting as lighting director/programmer.

A proponent of Prelite for the last decade, Turner has seen the technology evolve as his lighting needs have grown and changed. “There have been great improvements in Prelite’s hardware and software,” he reports. “We no longer wait for processing – we can have the whole rig turned on and it will look the same onstage as it does in the Vision software. I can preprogram complex musical numbers outside the theater without the cast and scenery – that’s a serious time saver.”

ABOUT PRELITE
Prelite was founded in San Francisco February 2000 by Tom Thompson and Norm Schwab as a place for lighting designers and programmers to use technologies to previsualize lighting projects. Its success led to the launch of Prelite NY in June 2001 by Kim Grethen and Rodd McLaughlin. The bicoastal company provides studios where previsualization and creativity take center stage away from the distractions and interruptions of a chaotic work environment and where clients save time a
nd money and minimize stress. Prelite also offers on-site previsualization services for those who prefer the convenience of working at the venue. For more information, visit www.prelite.com.
