AIA Awards Shanghai Disney for Use of Building Information Modeling on Enchanted Storybook Castle
As construction of the Shanghai Disney Resort continues on its theme park and associated facility development, we’re constantly defining and redefining themed entertainment with innovation, and we do that not just in the technology behind our attractions, but also in the way we design and develop them.” — Howard Brown, SVP and Project Development Executive, Walt Disney Imagineering Shanghai
Shanghai, China — A prestigious professional honor was recently awarded to recognize the innovative design and technology practices that have been used in the development of Enchanted Storybook Castle, currently under construction as the centerpiece of Shanghai Disney Resort’s theme park, Shanghai Disneyland. The American Institute of Architects presented its Technology in Architectural Practice Award to Walt Disney Imagineering for its successful implementation of Building Information Modeling, the process of generating and managing digital representations of structures and facilities.

“The Enchanted Storybook Castle is designed with retail, dining, operations and theatrical spaces, and a ride system running through it which marries traditional architectural detailing with modern building technology. It would be hard to imagine designing and building such a complex structure without having one integrated, central, smart model like Building Information Modeling,” said Howard Brown, Senior Vice President and Project Development Executive, Walt Disney Imagineering Shanghai.

Building Information Modeling facilitated a real time testing and feedback cycle that helped the Walt Disney Imagineering and Walt Disney Imagineering Shanghai project teams meet the unique challenges in realizing this complex, multi-use facility. It enabled collaboration using web-based social collaboration, video-telepresence and cloud-based computing which brought together dozens of team members on opposite sides of the globe, and allowed them to reach key project milestones ensuring a successful delivery of Shanghai Disney Resort.

“Our commitment to collaboration, teamwork, and mutual success enables us to create those magical, innovative experiences in a way that only Disney can do,” said David Van Wyk, WDI project management and integration executive. “When the whole organization is thinking about reinforcing each other’s efforts, it allows individuals the ability to focus on what they need to do to accomplish our shared goals. By using BIM processes and technology on this and other projects to be built around the world allow us to work smarter and more efficiently as a team.”

About Building Information Modeling

Building Information Modeling (BIM) is a digital representation of physical and functional characteristics of a facility. A BIM is a shared knowledge resource for information about a facility forming a reliable basis for decisions during its life-cycle; defined as existing from earliest conception to demolition.

Advantages

1)     Rapid Design Updates

The use of parametric BIM components in a native 3D workspace allowed for a quick update to the Castle’s stair and window heights. For example, testing a design option for a new monumental staircase integrated with the exterior building envelope was completed in approximately two hours as opposed to several days.

2)     Facilitating Design

The intelligent BIM model allowed designers to quickly redesign by hand, update the model, and then generate new backgrounds for additional hand sketching and design.

3)     Parametric Modeling

Building geometry with parametric control allows the design to be easily adjusted without rebuilding the component multiple times. Each adjustment now takes several minutes instead of several days, as almost none of the previous modeling effort is wasted.

4)     Material Detailing

The material attributes assigned to all geometry in the BIM model allows the team to quickly color the model and visualize material types. This helps to inform the work of third-party vendors, the contractor, project estimators, and architects.

5)     3D Design Review

Traditional 2D documents are difficult to understand, especially for those without engineering, architectural, or construction backgrounds. The BIM model allows a complete version of the castle to be visualized during design reviews.

6)     3D Crowd Simulation

Partnering with the Shanghai Disneyland park operations team, Walt Disney Imagineering Shanghai was able to use the BIM model for crowd simulation studies. Since the space was realistically modeled, the Shanghai Disneyland park operations team was able to determine accurate instantaneous demand for all the spaces within the building, as well as determine any pinch points in the design.

7)     Meeting Coordination

Walt Disney Imagineering Shanghai used the BIM model to solve construction challenges before going into the field.

8)     4D Planning And Visualization

By pairing the BIM model with construction sequencing software, Walt Disney Imagineering Shanghai was able to test and validate site logistics and practical construction activities, coordinate contractor activities, and keep the project on schedule.

9)     Information Exchange Diagram

Special software was used to transfer updates to the BIM model back and forth between the U.S. and China which enables 142 disciplines – each with its own team from local design institutes (LDI), the Walt Disney Imagineering Shanghai field office, and vendors in Shanghai, design consultants, Shanghai Disneyland’s operation teams and Walt Disney Imagineering in the United States to work on opposite sides of the globe to design the project.

Halloween in Tivoli Expands, Targets More Foreign Tourists

0
We believe that Halloween in Tivoli still has the potential to grow.  By including the extra week, Halloween in Tivoli covers the school holidays in most Northern European countries. We are convinced that Tivoli Gardens can attract more tourists from neighbouring countries such as Sweden, Germany and the United Kingdom.” — Dorthe Weinkouff Barsoe, Vice President, Tivoli Branding & Communications
Copenhagen, Denmark — Copenhagen’s Tivoli Gardens is reaching out to Europe by extending the Halloween themed autumn season for an extra week. Danes and tourists alike have embraced this foreign festival, making it the historic amusement park’s busiest season which now runs for three weeks, from October 10 – November 2.

Halloween in Tivoli, the autumn season at the historic Tivoli Gardens, has become a substantial success in a very short time. Tivoli aficionados initially frowned at the American festival being introduced in that most Danish of Danish attractions, the Tivoli Gardens in central Copenhagen. But seeing and experiencing what Tivoli’s Halloween is all about put all worries to rest. At Tivoli, Halloween becomes a Danish harvest festival as well as a show venue where ‘horrific fun’ is the order of the day.

Famed for its thousands of flowers and hundreds of old trees, Tivoli is no less beautiful when decorated for Halloween with 20,000 pumpkins, autumn flowers and harvest paraphernalia in ornamental tableaux throughout the gardens. The Danish Giant Pumpkin Championships are held on 11 October. It has been a warm summer and pumpkin growers from all over Denmark are looking to break the Danish record set in 2012 by a pumpkin weighing 451.4 kg.

The restaurants and shops will tempt you with hot soups, pancakes, warm beverages and an abundance of trinkets and gift items. But visitors will have to consider whether to eat first or ride first. Tivoli’s 30 rides are a mix of kiddie rides and white-knuckle rides like Aquila (5.2 G) or Vertigo (100 km/h top speed). People of either disposition will enjoy the 100-year-old wooden roller coaster and its classic rickety ride.

Tivoli’s three heroes and five witches perform every day in fun family shows on the open air stage. But visitors will also meet the colourful witches posing for photos, chatting with people and generally making an exhibition of themselves from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m.

At night Tivoli turns scarier. The Haunted House, whose employees have an outlandish take on customer service, opens its doors. The Zombie Dance Show is performed on a new open-air stage. Taking inspiration from Michael Jackson’s Thriller, these zombies use dance moves and parkour freerunning to do their dark deeds. 25 October is Monsters’ Night Out and all visitors are invited to dress up.

Opening for the first time in 2006, attendance for Halloween in Tivoli has increased every year. The 2006 season was 10 days long, and a few years later an extra week was added. In 2014, for the first time, Tivoli’s autumn season will last for 24 days. The period from 10 October – 2 November covers the autumn school break of most countries in Northern Europe.

Don Marinelli Introduces PHLIPITS Animation Software

Pittsburgh, PA, USA — Don Marinelli, co-founder of Carnegie Mellon’s Entertainment Technology Center, and keynote speaker at SATEE’13 has written to InPark Magazine about the newest development from his company SD Technologies:

Don Marinelli
Don Marinelli

Sept 18, 2014

Happy to say that my company, SD Technologies, rolled out yesterday our new easy-to-use animation software called PHLIPITS (i.e., Flip-Its).

PHLIPITS allows anyone to take a short video and turn it into a short animation. It provides functionality and options to allow for a wide variety of animating. It can also serve as a start-from-scratch, blank-age animation software.

IT IS ABSOLUTELY *FREE* – EASY TO DOWNLOAD, REQUIRES VERY LITTLE RAM AND DISC SPACE

The PHLIPITS tutorial is as direct and understandable as any I have ever viewed (and, yes, that is me doing the voice-over).

Videos run from one to ten seconds at ten frames per second (100 frames total). In editing, this can be extended to 200 frames, if so desired.

Imagine this as Instagram meets Vine/Vimeo.

The Phlipits website serves as the repository for your video creations. You create an account, hash tag your work, and share PHLIPITS on a variety of other social media sites.

Our aim, though, is to establish PHLIPITS as a destination site, a social media portal, and, before too long, commence a series of themed PHLIPITS challenges.

This is the URL for PHLIPITS: www.phlipits.com

Please feel free to contact me with any questions or comments you might have about PHLIPITS.

Thanks and Enjoy PHLIPITS,

Don

P.S. Various science teachers have remarked that PHLIPITS can be used easily to demonstrate procedural and sequential events such as the water cycle, the alimentary system, tectonic movements, mathematics, you-name-it.
