Shannon Lucid and Jerry Ross to be Inducted into Astronaut Hall of Fame During Ceremony at Space Shuttle Atlantis Attraction
The addition of Lucid and Ross brings the number of space explorers enshrined in the Hall of Fame to 87.”
Cape Canaveral, FL, USA (Kennedy Space Center) – Space shuttle astronauts Shannon Lucid, the only American woman to serve aboard the Russian Space Station Mir, and Jerry Ross, the first human to complete seven space shuttle missions, will be inducted into the U.S. Astronaut Hall of Fame at 3 p.m. Saturday, May 3 during a ceremony held in the Space Shuttle Atlantis attraction at Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex.

lucidLucid and Ross were selected by NASA to become astronauts within two years of each other; Lucid in 1978 and Ross in 1980. Now retired, both achieved honorable milestones throughout their careers with NASA. Lucid joined the first U.S. astronaut class to include women and held the record until 2007 for the most flight hours in orbit by a female astronaut (5,354 hours, or 223 days). Ross was the first to break the world record for being the first human launched into space seven times.

The location for the induction ceremony, is fitting as both Lucid and Ross flew several times on Atlantis.

Atlantis carried Lucid to Mir for her historic 188 days on the space station in 1996. President Bill Clinton presented Lucid with the Congressional Space Medal of Honor for her service aboard Mir, making her the first woman to receive the award. Lucid again flew on Atlantis for missions STS-34 and STS-43.

Five of Ross’s seven flights were flown on space shuttle Atlantis. In between his first launch into space on Nov. 26, 1986, aboard STS-61B Atlantis, and his last on April 8, 2002, with STS-110 Atlantis, he also flew on STS-27 Atlantis, STS-37 Atlantis, STS-55 Columbia and STS-74 Atlantis.

rossMore than 25 legendary astronauts and space icons will walk the red carpet for the induction ceremony including 2013 inductees Curt Brown, Eileen Collins and Bonnie Dunbar, as well as John Blaha, Karol “Bo” Bobko, NASA administrator Charlie Bolden, Vance Brand, Dan Brandenstein, Kennedy Space Center director Bob Cabana, Dick Covey, Frank Culbertson, Walt Cunningham, Owen Garriott, Hoot Gibson, Dick Gordon, Fred Gregory, Fred Haise, Steve Hawley, Jeff Hoffman, Edgar Mitchell, Pinky Nelson, Charlie Precourt, Brewster Shaw, Loren Shriver, Tom Stafford, Kathy Thornton and Jim Wetherbee.

Lucid and Ross will join the ranks of legendary space pioneers like Neil Armstrong, John Glenn, Alan Shepard, Jim Lovell, Sally Ride and John Young – all distinguished members of the Hall of Fame. Earlier inductees represent the Mercury, Gemini, Apollo, Skylab and Apollo-Soyuz programs.

The 2014 inductees were selected by a committee of Hall of Fame astronauts, former NASA officials, flight directors, historians and journalists. The process is administered by the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation. To be eligible, an astronaut must have made his or her first flight at least 17 years before the induction. Candidates must be a U.S. citizen and a NASA-trained commander, pilot or mission specialist who has orbited the earth at least once.

Rare Birth of Pacific Harbor Seal at Six Flags Discovery Kingdom
Maile is proving to be a great mom with strong maternal instincts.” — Michael Muraco, Animal Care Director, Six Flags Discovery Kingdom
Vallejo, CA, USA (April 23, 2012) — A female Pacific harbor seal pup was born early Saturday morning at Six Flags Discovery Kingdom’s Seal Cove exhibit, the first seal pup born at the park in eight years. The 20-lb. black, grey and white spotted pup, born to nine-year-old Maile, a first time mother, and 10-year-old male Dyson, was named “Lily” by staff in honor of her birth over Easter weekend.

“We expected the birth to happen any time over the past few weeks,” said Michael Muraco, animal care director. “Seal births are particularly unique in that the pup starts swimming within a few minutes after birth. Within a few hours, they’re already exploring.”

The Seal Cove exhibit was closed to the public the day of the birth, but the park posted a photo of the pup via social media. The exhibit reopened on Easter Sunday to the delight of guests who had an opportunity to see the newborn swim, sleep and nurse.

Pacific harbor seals, also known as true seals, are pinnipeds, and differ from sea lions in a number of ways, including having shorter, stouter flippers and no visible earflaps. When swimming, they use their hind flippers to propel through the water. Though not endangered, harbor seal colonies in the San Francisco Bay Area are vulnerable to human disturbance, climate change and human-produced pollutants.

Pups double their weight within the first four to six weeks nursing on the rich mother’s milk, which is about 45 percent fat, and then is weaned. In the wild, a mother will leave its pup after the first month to finish growing and fend for itself.

Reynolds Polymer Provides Windows to the Underwater Worlds of Chimelong Ocean Kingdom
Nowhere else on earth can you find a park of this magnitude that is entirely dedicated to the wonders of the sea.” — Matt Houlihan, Executive Vice President of Sales and Marketing, Reynolds Polymer
Grand Junction, CO, USA – The art of engineering oceans has left a large footprint with the opening of Chimelong in Guangdong, China. The massive new facility houses seven different areas that are designed to replicate different global habitats and aquatic regions.  The aquarium is said to contain a total of 12.87 million gallons of water and claims several Guinness titles, including the world’s largest underwater dome room, largest aquarium tank and largest aquarium viewing window.

Reynolds Polymer Technology, Inc. created custom panels for many of the exhibits at Chimelong, including the penguin area, the freshwater exhibits, and the Beluga whale pool. Installation of the numerous panels and large tunnel sections is always a delicate process; however, Chimelong was especially diffi cult. RPT workers were faced with the challenging task of positioning panels without a crane on the already roofed architecture, a feat that few could have accomplished given the geometries that RPT had to negotiate.

155649 (1)

The Polar Adventure attraction is home to the Beluga Experience, Polar Bear Village, and Penguin World, all of which feature RPT acrylic. Inside the Polar Bear Village is a 50 foot wide underwater demi-tunnel that required over 33,000 pounds of R-Cast. This unique concave panel brings visitors within inches of the largest inland carnivores in the world.

155650 (1)

The viewing panels in the Beluga whale amphitheater pool showcase the remarkable clarity that is possible from R-Cast material. The center arched panel is 40 feet long by 6.5 feet tall giving spectators dynamic views into the whale’s activities below the surface. The two curved panels on either side of the main panel offer similar experiences and are each 26 feet long for a total of 92 feet of viewing opportunities.

155652 (1)

A true RPT creation is the one-of-a-kind tunnel that runs through the penguin exhibit inside the Chimelong Ocean Kingdom. Visitors are able to walk through the 68 foot long, curved, underwater tunnel and see multiple species of penguins including King, Gentoo, Emperor, Adelie, and Humboldt. This acrylic tunnel features a 120° bend and offers the unique feature of viewing two different penguin exhibits within the same tunnel. R-Cast acrylic made it possible to connect each habitat with acrylic, rather than concrete, for a seamless transition from one area to the next.

155651 (1)

The Amazing Amazon attraction features a freshwater tunnel that is 87 feet long and takes visitors through an 88° bend. The crystal clear aquarium tunnel is only six inches thick and offers intimate views of two different river fish species, the South American river fish and the Asian river fish.

“It is always exciting to work on large projects, but it is truly an honor to have participated in the construction of the world’s largest aquarium,” commented Matt Houlihan, Executive Vice President of Sales and Marketing. “This is our forte. When records are going to be tested, RPT always gets the call to be involved. Chimelong is a surreal environment.”

LEGOLAND Florida Becomes First US Park to Go 100% Solar For Earth Day
This is a historic day for LEGOLAND Florida.” — LEGOLAND Florida General Manager Adrain Jones
Winter Haven, FL, USA — LEGOLAND Florida and Tampa Electric kicked off a groundbreaking partnership April 22 in a celebratory moment by making the 150-acre theme park run completely on renewable solar energy for the day in celebration of Earth Day – the first theme park to do so in the U.S. The celebration is part of existing and new conservation initiatives, including installations that will educate park guests about solar energy. As part of the partnership, LEGOLAND Florida will also permanently power a section of the park, Imagination Zone, on renewable energy.

“With our new partnership with Tampa Electric, we will give guests a whole new way to learn about renewable energy while also doing something that no other theme park in the U.S. has done before,”  said LEGOLAND Florida General Manager Adrian Jones.

A celebratory moment was held just prior to park opening Tuesday, at approximately 9:45 a.m., with both Jones and Bruce Narzissenfeld, vice president of Marketing, Customer Service, Business Development and Fuel Operations for Tampa Electric, proclaiming the partnership and special green initiative. Even the confetti was eco-friendly. The focal point centered around LEGOLAND Florida running on renewable energy for an entire day, with environmental savings equal to removing three cars from the road for one year or planting six acres of trees.

The partnership also resulted in the installation of a 30-kilowatt solar panel array mounted atop the Imagination Zone attraction venue. Funded by Tampa Electric, the system supports Tampa Electric’s Renewable Energy program that lets the company’s customers purchase a portion of their electricity from renewable sources.

“This is a partnership built on doing the right thing for the environment,” said Narzissenfeld. “Together, we’ll teach the next generation about the benefits of investing in renewable fuels like the sun to produce electricity.

As part of the partnership, a new display will be placed inside the park starting in June, featuring an interactive 6-foot LEGO Earth model that educates guests on solar technologies. Located outside Imagination Zone, visitors will be able to affect the rate of LEGO Earth’s rotation with tactile solar panels. Guests will also enjoy an interactive zone that features LEGO mini model communities running on renewable energy inside the Imagination Zone.

The new areas add to the multiple educational aspects already within LEGOLAND Florida. The park gives kids a chance to learn and play with STEM-based activities such as LEGO MINDSTORMS robots, Build & Test and Power Towers.

LEGOLAND Florida has made a consistent effort for conservation since the park opened in 2011, including:

–The park recycled nearly 60 tons of bottles and cans in 2013, along with 176 tons of cardboard

–Throughout the park, guests can find over 180 recycled-made benches, with each made out of 800 recycled milk jugs

–Each of the park’s 310 trash cans (consisting of both waste and recycle only at a 1-to-1 rate) are made out of 330 recycled milk jugs

–LEGOLAND Florida has map recycling stations to avoid the waste of park maps that guests can acquire at the beginning sections of the park

–The LEGOLAND Water Park holds 26 benches and 88 trashcans made entirely out of recyclable materials
