ProSlide Technology Brings a Tornado to Las Vegas
We’re pleased to continue our great partnership with ProSlide Technology. The company’s creativity in developing slides continues to innovate the water park industry.” — Tim Fisher, CEO, Village Roadshow Theme Parks
Las Vegas, NV, USA — Wet ‘n’ Wild Las Vegas has announced that it is bringing the world’s premier funnel water slide to Las Vegas and Nevada with the TORNADO by ProSlide Technology. The award-winning extreme water slide simulates a natural storm experience and will join the water park’s more than 25 slides and attractions in providing outdoor water fun and lasting memories for families and thrill seekers. While the park will open on April 12 for Spring Break, the Wet ‘n’ Wild Tornado will launch during the official start to summer, Memorial Day weekend.

The Tornado is a four-person raft attraction that catapults riders from 36 feet in the air through a 110-foot tunnel before dropping them into the 45-foot-wide funnel where they spin back and forth through swirling water before plummeting into the eye of the storm. As the raft sweeps up the Tornado wall and crosses its centerline, guests experience weightlessness or zero gravity. With their raft almost vertical on the wall, riders report feeling like they are about to tip over, but the curved funnel wall keeps them perfectly safe. After a series of these oscillations, they descend through a tube to the exit pool.

“The Tornado is an exciting addition to Wet ‘n’ Wild Las Vegas for our guests who will have a new shared extreme slide experience, and for our park in adding a ‘must-have’ slide that’s become a favorite among water park attendees,” said Tim Fisher, CEO of Village Roadshow Theme Parks, one of the world’s leading water and theme park operators that is Wet ‘n’ Wild Las Vegas’ majority owner and oversees day-to-day operations.

Canadian-based ProSlide Technology is a leading developer of innovative water rides.

“Finally Nevada thrill seekers can enjoy the most popular iconic ride in the world at Wet ‘n’ Wild Las Vegas,” said Rick Hunter, ProSlide president and CEO. “The ProSlide TORNADO is the only ride anywhere with a true funnel shape. With its perfectly round opening and curved walls, this shape actually generates an unbeatable excitement level with a big drop into the massive funnel and zero-g sensations.”

He added the TORNADO’s true funnel shape is patented by ProSlide and can’t be replicated. “It’s the physics of the funnel shape that create the unparalleled experience for riders,” he said.

The innovation and ride performance of the ProSlide TORNADO has been recognized with many Best Water Ride honors, including the industry’s most prestigious Industry Impact Award from the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions (IAAPA).

In addition to the Tornado, Wet ‘n’ Wild Las Vegas is adding more hours, more days, more parking and more shade; heating the water in children’s area; and other improvements.  “We had a very successful first season, but are always looking for ways to enhance the guest experience,” said Fisher. “We listened to feedback; and as a result, we’re expanding the number of late night operating hours and operating days, adding more shade areas and lounge chairs, increasing our parking lot, and providing an early entry option for Gold Pass and new VIP Pass holders.”

Wet ‘n’ Wild is now selling its popular season passes, which sold out last year.  “Gold Passes and Season Passes are well-priced offering a family and friends discount when purchasing four or more and can pay for themselves in as little as two visits,” Fisher added.  “They’re a smart and affordable way to extend summer budgets. Our new VIP Pass will do the same.” The VIP Pass option expands on the Gold Pass package by including a number of free Xpress Bands.

LEGOLAND Florida Restores Portion of Historic Cypress Gardens
The most exciting thing about this is it makes the gardens whole again.” — Cypress Gardens historian Bob Gernert.
Winter Haven, FL, USA — In a blending of old and new, LEGOLAND Florida paid tribute to the heritage of Cypress Gardens during a ribbon cutting ceremony to reopen the Florida Pool and Oriental Gardens. With elected officials and community leaders in attendance, General Manager Adrian Jones and Bob Gernert, former Winter Haven Chamber Executive Director and Cypress Gardens historian, led the unveiling Wednesday morning.

Former Cypress Gardens southern belles in their billowing dresses and the LEGO belles, now iconic in the gardens, greeted guests to the event. The Florida Pool was filled with brightly-colored floating LEGO brick and the perimeter was adorned with fresh Florida citrus, paying homage to the iconic citrus photos made famous by Dick Pope, Sr. during the mid-1900s.

Beginning March 6, guests are welcome to enjoy these restored areas. The gardens are an integral part of LEGOLAND Florida, adding to the already exciting line up of more than 50 family-friendly rides. From pink knuckle roller coasters to live action shows and attractions, LEGOLAND Water Park, opening April 12th, and the all-new LEGO World of Chima presented by Cartoon Network, there are offerings for all generations.

“We have taken great care to restore and maintain the historic Cypress Gardens since our opening in 2011 and we are thrilled to reopen such beloved areas as the Florida Pool and the Oriental Gardens for guests of all ages to enjoy,” said Adrian Jones, LEGOLAND Florida General Manager.

Florida’s first ever theme park, Cypress Gardens became famous for its botanical gardens, southern belles and was known as the Water Ski Capitol of the World from the 1930s through the 1960s. Cypress Gardens secured national recognition as the film site for a multitude of movies and TV shows. The Florida Pool was originally built as a set for the 1953 film, “Easy to Love”, starring Esther Williams.

Now nestled in the center of the park, LEGOLAND Florida has taken great care to restore the beautiful and historic botanical gardens to pristine condition. The collection of native plants, including azaleas and camellias, have been reclaimed and combined with a range of exotic species to create a horticultural masterpiece. The breathtaking Banyan Tree, planted in 1939 as a seedling, still stands prominent within the gardens.

“It makes it exactly what it was when Mr. and Mrs. Pope put the concept together so many years ago,” said Gernert.

Fulldome show creator Peter Popp talks about “Life of Trees” at IMERSA Summit 2014

In 2004 the fulldome video “Kaluoka’hina: The Enchanted Reef,” produced by Peter Popp of Softmachine.de, burst onto the scene. This family-oriented animation took viewers on a trip to a magical reef, combining oceanography and astronomy. It tells the story of a reef dwelling fish and his friend, who have a grand adventure searching out the meaning of the Moon. The show has won various awards at such festivals as DomeFest and Animago.

In 2013, Popp, in cooperation with Ilusa Media, C.A. I Systeme GmbH, and Senator AG, released his latest animated fulldome show, “The Life of Trees,” a 360° adventure also available in 3D. This award-winning show follows the antics of Dolores and Mike, a pair of adventurous insects who set out to explore the microcosm of plants and trees, and their relationship to all other life on Earth. It is the first fulldome video created in omni-stereoscopic 3D.

“Life of Trees” is a featured screening at IMERSA Summit 2014, March 6-9 in Denver. Carolyn Collins Petersen of Loch Ness Productions interviewed Peter Popp about the show and asked him to share some insights about the fulldome medium.

You have been producing for fulldome for quite some time now and are one of the pioneers in full-length animation for the medium. What particular challenges do you think producers face in directing animation for fulldome?

Telling a story on the dome is different from telling a story for a flat screen. The shape of the dome has an influence on the use of the cinematographic means. Lighting, editing, camera movements, panning, close-ups have to be adapted to the domed environment. The dome perspective demands attention to the whole 360° environment. In a conventional film, one only has to consider a part of this 360° picture. In the dome all characters which can be seen the 360° scene have to be directed. It is important to direct the attention of the audience to the spot of the dome where the relevant action takes place. One way to achieve an immersive feeling is having a moving camera following the characters. Another way is to move the characters around the dome.

Life of Trees is 3D animation for 360 dome exhibition. Is there any particular scene that was difficult or more challenging to create than you expected?

One big challenge was the opening scene. The camera movement was toward the tree trunk, through a gap in the trunk, moving farther into a narrow opening in the ground inside the trunk. All this had to happen in one continuous camera move without any chance of cutting. The camera had to travel from a distance, from which a very rich environment is visible, up to 50 meters radius, and into the tree trunk. At certain points, details no bigger than fractions of a millimeter became visible. This enormous difference in scale made it necessary to capture a vast amount of data that had to be in the image in any given frame. And the amount of data increased the closer we got to the surface of the tree trunk.

Furthermore, due to the huge differences in scale the digital camera easily ended up suffering rounding errors which resulted in jittering. We faced the same problem in a later scene where photosynthesis was shown.

The IMERSA Summit is a place where people from many aspects of fulldome film production come together to share ideas, new methods, and talk about the future of the community. What ideas you hope Summit attendees will take away from your presentation and seeing The Life of Trees?

Fulldome is a fantastic medium and I would like to show that one can achieve a very good quality in dome productions. This is true for content as well as the quality and richness of the images. And, another important thing I want to point out is that dome films should not just communicate scientific facts but should have a story and also a message. The edutainment format is ideally suited for that.

What do you hope to do next in fulldome?

I hope I can contribute to develop the fulldome medium, bring it to a broader audience and make it more open to any kind of interesting story.

Rando Productions to Auction off Rando Christmas Tree for Shane’s Inspiration Gala
We are absolutely thrilled by Rando Productions’ extreme generosity in donating their stunning Rando Christmas Tree to us.” — Catherine Curry-Williams, Shane’s Inspiration Co-Founder
Los Angeles, CA, USA — Rando Productions, a full service design, engineering, and manufacturing organization servicing all industries in the entertainment business from theme park attractions and museum exhibits to broadcast and film, has donated its one-of-a-kind Rando Christmas Tree to Shane’s Inspiration, a premiere philanthropic organization for creating social inclusion for children with disabilities.

The $35,000 tree is one the highest value and unusual gifts that Shane’s Inspiration has received in its 16-year history.  It will be sold at the charity’s live auction, part of their 2014 Gala Celebration on March 8 at the Beverly Hills Hotel.

DSC01182

“We’re sure the tree is going to create quite a stir of excitement at our auction, and bring in high bids,”  commented Catherine Curry-Williams, Shane’s Inspiration Co-Founder and Gala Chair.

With its 10,000 lights, the 28-foot tall 360-degree rotating Rando Christmas Tree can be seen at night from a half mile away.  Steel rods form the tree silhouette, crowned with an LED light star.  Its complex light sequencing system interacts with textilene mesh glitter fabric to create the illusion of a green ribbon in motion, flowing around the entire tree.

Because the tree is too large to transport to the Gala, instead, auction guests will be treated to a video presentation of its sophisticated design, showing how it lights up the night sky.

Creating social inclusion for children with disabilities through the vehicle of inclusive playgrounds and programs, Shane’s Inspiration is a premiere philanthropy based in Los Angeles, and involved in projects all over the world. Since 1998, it has helped raise millions of dollars to develop almost 50 Universally Accessible Playground projects in Southern California, Canada, Mexico, Ecuador, and Russia.  Shane’s Inspiration has also reached over 35,000 children through transportation, education and community outreach programs.

Triogen expands its UVARAY CROSSFLOW range of UV water treatment systems

East Kilbride, UK — Leading ultraviolet and ozone water treatment specialist Triogen has expanded its range of UVARAY CROSSFLOW medium pressure UV water treatment systems, to meet the increase in demand for its UV systems for commercial pools

The latest additions to the UVARAY CROSSFLOW range allow Triogen to offer units for flow rates from 20 to 1000 m3/h. The NSF International tested and certified and UL/ CE approved systems utilise a 316L stainless steel reactor, UV monitor, reactor temperature sensor and an automatic “smart drive” wiper system, controlled via a touch screen microprocessor control including a data logging facility. Providing optimal ease of installation and long term reliability, the UV reactor also features quick release UV lamp connections making lamp replacement quick and easy.  The systems provide effective control of chloramines, and “swimming pool smell”, as well as destroying chlorine resistant organisms, such as Cryptosporidium, with the added benefit that installation, operation and maintenance are made simple and affordable

Triogen’s expansion to the UVARAY CROSSFLOW range widens its portfolio of UV systems. This also includes the TR2 UV system, designed to provide reliable, cost-effective treatment and improved water quality for domestic pools and water features. The TR2 range offers models with one, two, three or four low pressure UV lamps, treating flow rates of up to 40 m3/h with a UV dose of 30 mJ/cm2 at the end of the 18 month lamp life. The lamps are powered by electronic ballasts housed within the reactor top cap. Pressure shutdown and a thermal switch are included for system protection, while a centre ring gives visual indication  that the lamps are operational. The suffix to the model designation (e.g. TR2-4) indicates the number of UV lamps provided. The models are designed to have a small footprint and low power consumption. The TR2 systems include a corrosion resistant vessel, suitable for long term use with salt water chlorinators and are easy to install, having selectable inlet and outlet positions. The 2-inch and 63mm PVC inlet and outlet unions are provided with all four models to allow easy connection to existing or new PVC pipework.

Christie to Introduce 4K Laser Projection at CinemaCon and NAB Show
With extremely high light efficiency, nearly no crosstalk and crisp images with vibrant colors, we believe Dolby 3D combined with laser projection produces the best possible 3D viewing experience for audiences.” — Doug Darrow, Dolby Senior Vice President
Cypress, CA, USA (March 3, 2014) Christie today announced upcoming demonstrations of the world’s most advanced laser projection architecture and Dolby 3D, to be held in the Christie Innovation Theaters throughout CinemaCon 2014 (Caesars Palace, March 24-27) and the National Association of Broadcasters NAB Show (Las Vegas Convention Center, April 5-10). Christie DLP Cinema laser projectors using 6-Primary (6P) color laser modules, earmarked for mass production in early 2015, will show how 3D light levels, image uniformity, viewing comfort, and a sense of immersion can be vastly improved, especially when combined with advanced separation technology like Dolby 3D, versus conventional 3D systems found in cinemas around the world today.

“Recent declines in domestic 3D movie attendance are a sign that the novelty is wearing off, with audiences less willing to pay a premium for what is all too often a mediocre experience. The lackluster quality of this experience results from a number of technical limitations with current 3D system architectures, the most serious one being restricted light levels that amount to only 10-30 percent of those levels achieved for 2D presentations,” said Don Shaw, senior director, Product Management, Christie Entertainment Solutions. “Simply put, the movies are too dark, leaving audiences struggling to discern critical details that make up the image in front of them.”

“Christie’s latest laser projection technology, using 6 specific primary colors rather than filtered or polarized broad-spectrum white light, brings dramatically improved 3D efficiency to projection systems, regardless of the size of screen in premium movie theaters,” added Shaw. “We believe that this is the future of 3D cinema projection, that it is right around the corner, and that it will be a key element in boosting 3D box office revenues around the world. Our CinemaCon and NAB Show demonstrations will be the first 6P laser events available to the broad cinema community, from filmmakers to exhibitors, and reaffirms Christie’s 80-year commitment to cinema innovation, rather than ‘moving beyond digital cinema’ as some other industry players have promised.”

At least twice as efficient as today’s best 3D systems, Christie’s 6P laser projectors generate a proprietary mix of photoptically-optimized light wavelengths for each eye directly from the source, in effect eliminating the need for a highly inefficient stage of filtering or polarizing the light as it leaves the projector. The Christie demos will use Dolby 3D glasses specifically engineered to exactly match the 6 primary laser light wavelengths to yield nearly 90 percent light efficiency. “Their color separation based technique for 3D is well regarded as the gold standard among industry professionals, especially for its true color reproduction, compatibility with low-gain white screens, and superior crosstalk performance – only now it can be part of a system that is tremendously more light efficient,” said Shaw.

“Dolby 3D’s advanced color separation technology is ideally suited for next generation laser projectors,” said Doug Darrow, Senior Vice President, Cinema, Dolby Laboratories.

“Having had the opportunity to witness an early 6P laser demo at Christie’s worldwide center for engineering, research and development in Canada, I can confidently state that this is an exciting and important innovation in 3D cinema,“ said Matt Cowan, Co-founder & Senior Technical Advisor at Entertainment Technology Consultants. “I look forward to further refinement of this technology and upcoming installation in premiere theaters around the world.”

Consistent with efforts so far in developing 3-Primary (3P) laser projectors, which Christie sees filling important needs in several, non-cinema industries,Christie laser projectors will provide industry-leading brightness (up to 72,000 Lumens per projector head), wider color gamut capabilities, higher contrast, and dramatically reduced maintenance requirements, resulting in a better experience for all applications. As part of its largest research and development program ever, Christie will continue to develop superior 6P and 3P laser projection solutions for all of its global customers.

Specific to the development of cinema laser projectors, Christie leads the industry in this area, having announced last year that it would supply and install the world’s first commercial laser projection solution for the Seattle Cinerama Theatre, and that it was the first to receive a US FDA approval of variance allowing the sale and installation of laser projectors in movie theaters and other high performance projection venues.
