Chicago, IL, USA (December 5, 2013) — The restoration and preservation of Walt and his brother Roy’s birthplace and home officially got underway today, on Walt Disney’s 112th birthday, at a press conference held at the historic site.  The home is located at 2156 North Tripp Ave. in Chicago, Illinois. Alderman Rey Colon (35th) was on hand along with homeowners Brent Young and Dina Benadon to begin the year-long meticulous process of restoring the home to its 1901 state, when Walt was born.  As part of the celebration, Mayor Emanuel proclaimed it Walt Disney Day in Chicago. “On behalf of the Disney family, we are so pleased to see Walt Disney’s historic birthplace and family home being restored to its humble origins in the City of Chicago,” said Roy Patrick Disney, grandson to Roy O. Disney and Walt’s great nephew, in a statement. “The outpouring of support and excitement we’ve seen from both city officials and Disney fans alike has been simply wonderful, and this is truly a fitting way to honor both Walt and Roy O. Disney, the pioneering brothers who forever changed the face of family entertainment, and, of course, will forever be two of Chicago’s most prominent native sons.” In addition to Young, Benadon, Disney and Colon, also attending the press conference were Betsy Steinberg, Director of the Illinois Film Office; Preservation Architect Charles Pipal; Chicago Cultural Historian Tim Samuelson; Zoning Historic Preservation Consultant Timothy Barton and the students of William Nixon Elementary School. Famed Chicago bakery TipsyCake provided Walt’s birthday cake, decorated to look like the home did at the time of Walt’s birth. Owner and principal Naomi Levine said, “I adore Goofy and spent my first trip to the United States at Disneyland at age 9. I adored the experience!” Young and Benadon, who have been in the theme park industry for over 20 years, credit the Disney family for inspiring their careers. They purchased the birthplace of Walt and Roy as a way to give back and protect the site where the Disneys were nurtured as boys, leading them to become pioneering giants of family entertainment. The home was built in 1893 by Walt and Roy’s father Elias, and designed by their mother, Flora.  Elias Disney built two other homes on the same block as well as the St. Paul Congregational Church.  “It’s an amazing story that keeps unfolding and every day we learn something new,” Benadon said.  “Our dream is that the home will serve as a place to inspire creativity in our children for generations to come.” In order to finance the project, Young stated, “Our vision has always been to reach out to the community the Disney brothers have touched and the perfect mechanism for this was through Kickstarter.   In addition to crowd funding, we hope to raise financing through the private sector and potential sponsorships.” “I am honored to work with the Mayor’s Office in declaring December 5, 2013 as ‘Walt Disney Day’ in the City of Chicago,” said Colon. “Walt Disney’s epic contributions to American entertainment and our personal lives will be memorialized by the historic restoration and designation of Walt Disney’s birthplace.” To learn more about The Disney Birthplace Project and how to participate in this historical restoration and preservation go to www.thewaltdisneybirthplace.org. Dina Benadon and Brent Young
Dina Benadon and Brent Young

Dina Benadon, Project Director, Property Owner Born and raised in Los Angeles, where her father founded and built what became one of Hollywood’s largest post-production companies, Dina grew up at his side, gaining first-hand insights into the world of film production. Dina started her own career at an emerging computer animation company in the early 90s. Encouraged by the artists and the excitement of new technologies, Dina segued into the Theme Park division where she found herself immersed in the creation of cutting-edge attractions. There, she met fellow enthusiast Brent Young and in 1997, followed in her father’s footsteps by launching, with Brent, Super 78, their own animation company. Super 78 has grown and evolved into a content developer of specialty movies for theme park rides, attractions, museums and science centers. She and Brent (now her husband, as well) live and work in Silverlake and have a three-year-old son, Truman. Dina has earned nominations and awards and is an active Board member for the Themed Entertainment Association and the Producers Guild of America, New Media Council, helping to grow membership and foster new talent in both organizations. Brent Young, Project Director, Property Owner A native of Chicago himself, Brent moved to Los Angeles in the early 90s, where he worked as an assistant film editor in a growing computer animation company that produced animated movies for theme park attractions. In 1997, he launched a production company with fellow themed attraction producer, Dina Benadon, whom he also later married. Together, they would grow Super 78, their animation studio, into one of the most well known media production and creative companies in the theme park industry, receiving numerous industry awards and recognition. Brent is a director, musician and, most passionately, a theme park aficionado who co-hosts “The Season Pass,” a themed entertainment industry-focused iTunes show (now in its sixth year and more popular than ever). He and his wife live and work in Silverlake, California with their three-year-old son – around the corner from where Walt and Roy made Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs in 1937.

Checking In: WyldBlue Entertainment

1) What is WyldBlue Entertainment?

WyldBlue Entertainment is a leading international creative consulting, project management, design development and production company that specializes in all disciplines of leisure entertainment, production and e-media. We strive to create magical guest experiences that not only tell a great story, but make the most of safety, the environment and culture, while improving the quality of life.  Fresh, clever and inventive, WyldBlue excels in project design development, project management and operations.

2) WyldBlue is celebrating its tenth anniversary. How did the company get started?

Principals Jim King and Jan Shaw have known each other and worked together on projects for over 20 years.  No matter where in the world we were working, we kept crossing paths.  Ten years ago, we realized that we compliment each other’s strengths, and in a “V8 moment” said, “Why aren’t we working together as Partners?”  We launched WyldBlue by developing and producing a Travel TV series, the “Soarin’” attraction dedication and “California Dreamin’” International Press Event at Epcot.

3) Ten years ago we were in the middle of the post- “9/11” slump.  How has the market changed since then?

Post “9/11”, the “new economy”, corporate mergers and political games all had a major influence on how companies conducted business.  Many companies had to close their doors. It was a lean time that forced companies who wanted to stay in business to re-invent themselves by diversifying.  WyldBlue survived by changing strategies and creating new solutions. We also asked our clients what they needed from us in order to succeed.  We encouraged them to use a modular phase planning approach that breaks down projects in bite size, affordable pieces, while completing a long term goal. We saw the need to do some things better for our clients, and adjusted to fit their needs.  We developed relationships and strategic alliances with companies to team together, created new and licensed intellectual properties, and focused on technology of the future so that our clients’ projects would be prepared when everything turned back on again.  Our patience paid off.   Now we are seeing a positive upswing as projects are coming alive again.  Recently, WyldBlue has been signed as Owner’s Reps /Project Management firm for two large U.S. development projects, and are being considered for a few overseas projects.  In addition, we are in pre-production for two reality series and Webisodes.

4) What regions or specific market segments do you find the most promising for future growth?

Many of the projects that are crossing our desks are mixed-use entertainment destination resorts, large theme park projects and dark ride attractions. The need for multiple revenue streams is critical. We have been advocating for interactive experiences to replace traditional queue lines. We see substantial projects coming out of China, with a great need for companies like ours that possess wider, more balanced design, master planning, project management, ride and show design development, and operational knowledge to support the growth of projects in China and other areas.  Eastern Europe and underserved regions like India are indicating potential.

5) What big predictions do you have for the themed entertainment industry ten years from now?

We envision projects with long term forecasts of 10-20 years ahead to stay on the cutting edge. We predict explosive growth in family-oriented projects, as more countries grow their middle class consumer.  Based on what we are working on, new technology will be an amazing game changer. However, although technology is a great tool and delivery system, content, story and experience continue to drive the industry. IP-driven experiences and interactivity will rise, while the more traditional media will fall away.   We predict that immersive guest experiences and audience interactivity with special effects will continue to evolve as consumers become more sophisticated. Themed entertainment of the future will be more esoteric, simulated, interactive experiences for guests to become more actively involved, rather than as passive observers.

Big&Digital Releases “Napa Valley Dreams,” First Documentary Released in Dolby Atmos

321441_331509360308531_2097838125_n

Las Vegas, NV, USA — BIG & Digital, LLC has announced that Napa Valley Dreams is available worldwide to the network of Giant Screen Theaters located in museums and attractions. The film is produced by Rodney Vance of Singular Entertainment and premiered at the
Cameo Cinema in the heart of Napa Valley on May 15, 2013.

Rodney Vance, award-winning producer and writer, and noted cinematographers Christopher Rusin and John Tagamolila created a stunning visual portrait of what many consider to be one of the most beautiful places on earth– Napa Valley, California. The film represents a place everyone knows, but not everyone has visited, including a few places never before captured on film.

Napa Valley Dreams captures the exquisite light, color and texture of the landscape and the community in a journey from soil to soul. “Napa Valley is a soulful place,” explains Vance. “This place is more than just home to world-class wine and cuisine and we wanted to capture the experience of that, the enchantment of that, and what it’s like to live there and experience the Valley season by season.”

Audiences discover the people, the places and the heart of Napa Valley and get to explore areas rarely seen by visitors, including environmentally sensitive parts of the valley that have never before been professionally filmed. Many consider the Archer-Taylor Preserve and the Dunn-Wildlake Preserve, both filmed for Napa Valley Dreams, to be the most beautiful sections of the Napa Valley. The cinematography is stunning and includes the night sky over Lake Hennessy; off-road biking in the redwood-filled forests; and glimpses into the daily life of local sustainable farms, wineries and spas.

The film highlights Hollywood’s love for wine and features iconic Napa personalities, including; musician Ray Manzarek—The Doors, Donald Hess–The Hess Collection, Glass Artist Gordon Huether, 3-Michelin Star Chef Christopher Kostow of The Restaurant at Meadowood, and Chocolate Atelier Wendy Sherwood with cameos by Eleanor Coppola and the Mondavi family.

Napa Valley Dreams is the first documentary to use the cutting-edge technology of Dolby Atmos™, a break-through, next-generation audio solution that changes the way people experience entertainment sound. Atmos creates an immersive atmosphere of sound that comes from the ceiling as well as all around you. The sound of a bird, or a waterfall, comes from a specific location within the theater.

The score, composed by Scott Greer, utilizes international instruments and features the song ‘Wine Country Cowboy’ written by Shane Soldinger and performed by The Silverado Pickups, a local band.

“We are excited to distribute Napa Valley Dreams. It is a beautiful and enchanting film and will be appreciated by all ages,” states Tina Ratterman, of BIG & Digital. “It’s perfect to program with exhibits of related topics and to be shown for member, corporate, and fund-raising events. There is so much theaters can do to have fun with this film. It’s a perfect film for parents who desire an escape to Napa Valley and for children who find the landscape visually stunning.”

The run time is 41 minutes and can be leased for Digital 2K and 4K Theaters and can also be shown using Blu-Ray and DVD for Special Events and Private Rentals.

Carlsbad, CA, USA (Dec. 2, 2013) — LEGOLAND California Resort is offering an early present for the holidays: the first look at the new LEGO Legends of Chima Water Park, opening summer of 2014. The artist rendering by Project Designer Lindsay Burroughs reveals the Lion Temple Wave Pool featuring a 20-foot tall LEGO lion archway, the iconic 40-foot tall “floating” Mount Cavora and an interactive wave pool designed for families with young children.

The LEGO Legends of Chima Water Park is based on the LEGO Group’s newest hit product “Legends of Chima,” where animal tribes battle in a mystical land for control of the precious energy source called “CHI”. The Lion Temple Wave Pool is the marquee attraction in the new Water Park where guests make their way through a LEGO lion archway as Mount Cavora releases 400 gallons of water every minute into the wave pool. An animal from each of the eight animal tribes is represented on Mount Cavora and families will enjoy spending the day splashing about one of the many water features in the pool, playing with oversized soft LEGO brick and soaking in the sun.

Additional areas in the new Water Park include; Cragger’s Swamp – A hands-on water play area inviting guests to ride water slides, blast water cannons and zoom through the head of a massive crocodile; Build-A-Boat – A unique interactive play experience giving children the opportunity to use their creativity and bring their imaginations to life as they build boats and learn how to change the currents, build and dodge obstacles and race their friends; Wolves’ Cantina –The place to grab a bite when guests get hungry and check out the cool collectibles gathered by the clever wolf tribe.

Two 2014 Thea Recipients Are Electrosonic Projects

970908_10151620824522148_1677420227_n

Los Angeles, CA, USA — The Themed Entertainment Association (TEA) has announced the winners of the prestigious 20th annual Thea Awards, honoring creative excellence in theme parks, museums and other attractions, and once again Electrosonic has taken part in several of the winning projects.  This year Electrosonic played key roles in Outstanding Achievement awards for the Polynesian Cultural Center Revitalization in Oahu, Hawaii, and the Mystic Manor trackless ride at Hong Kong Disneyland.

The Polynesian Cultural Center (PCC) netted honors in the Attraction Revitalization category and was cited by TEA for “very successfully bringing the 50-year old facility and guest experience into the 21st century.”  The theater hosts the new production “Hawaiian Journey,” which takes guests on a breathtaking flight through the islands as they look at the time of the first Hawaiians.

HJ-Master_fixed (1)

Electrosonic provided AV systems and design expertise for the PCC’s new digital 4D theater, which replaced an aging film-based IMAX theater and enhanced the guest experience both inside and out.  Electrosonic installed a new AV system in the reimagined theater, including a Christie 4K projector, 7thSense 4K media server and Strong/MDI 40×74-foot projection screen plus a new 7.1 surround sound system and Medialon Show Manager.  Electrosonic also installed AV system connections that enable the theater to serve as a true multi-purpose facility. Electrosonic’s Design Consulting team worked with the Creative Team at Michael Lee Design, LLC to provide technical AV solutions during the Design phases of the project.

Mystic Manor at Hong Kong Disneyland won TEA’s top honors in the Attraction category for the ride creators’ ability to never lose “their rigorous focus on the beautifully told story” while achieving “technical breakthroughs.”

Electrosonic built the AV system for Mystic Manor, a trackless ride-through attraction that combines extensive and ingenious projection mapping, audio-animatronics and other one-of-a-kind special effects to tell the tale of a mischievous monkey and a magical music box whose ribbon of mystical energy brings a host of artifacts to life.  The highly immersive adventure is full of surprises and theatrical wonders that deliver “state-of-the-art storytelling.”

The Thea Awards are considered one of the attraction industry’s greatest honors.  The awards gala, slated for April 5, 2014, in Anaheim, California, will mark two decades since Thea honors were first presented.
