Al Cross of PGAV Destinations on The Five Spot

fivespot-new(November 15, 2013) — Over the next week, thousands of IAAPA delegates will be visiting Central Florida’s newest attractions.  A number of them, including the Entry Experience and Space Shuttle Atlantis at the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex, Turtle Trek and Antarctica: Empire of the Penguin at SeaWorld Orlando, and Cheetah Hunt at Busch Gardens Tampa Bay all bear the stamp of PGAV Destinations.

This St Louis-based firm has created a term for what they do – “Destinology”, which they define as “the art and science of creating successful destinations.” Throughout the company’s nearly five decades of practice, they have developed thousands of project in more than thirty states and on five continents. Their staff of more than 100 full-time professionals includes planners, architects, brand specialists, earned revenue specialists, interior designers, landscape architects, artists, producers, and interpretive designers.

InPark News Editor Joe Kleiman asked five questions to Al Cross, PGAV Destinations’ Vice President.  Here’s what he had to say:

Are there hidden Mickeys or Shamus in Antarctica?

In the true spirit of the question, I must answer by saying that I may neither confirm nor deny anything that may be implied by answering said question. However, recently our entire company and guests flew to Orlando to view, as a group, the work at Antarctica; Empire of the Penguin as well as The Atlantis Exhibit at Kennedy Space Center. In fact, you can see the entire story on Twitter (#PGAVtrip) or Storify. We did, in fact, find “hidden” things, and it appears that guests are discovering these Easter Eggs as well. Such discoveries may or may not be limited to likenesses of Shamu. By the way, if there were hidden “M I C K E Y S” in a Sea World project we would be … well … heh … it wouldn’t be good for us.

Why does quite a bit of your work involve bears?

Because Bears are cool.   But seriously, the truth is that there is a story to tell. Global Warming and habitat depreciation are meaningful, topical, and emotionally charged, important story topics. Bears … particularly Polar Bears … are charismatic creatures who automatically generate interest, making them a good choice for Zoological institutions to catalyze the educational debate on these subjects. In the case of our work, like Louisville Zoo’s Glacier Run (which won the AZA exhibit of the year award) for example, there is often a very compelling human-to-bear back-story, too. It is certainly true that lately we have authored several major bear exhibits. All of them have received some attention, (and we are super-proud of them), but the truth is we have designed multiple exhibits for the same species with regularity over the past 40 years because we are animal exhibit experts. The world wants these stories and wants to see these animals. So, like I said … it’s because bears are cool.

The Atlantis exhibit integrates an existing blockbuster attraction – the Shuttle Launch Experience.  What considerations – architecturally and thematically – were made to make this happen?

Atlantis was destined to become the new magnet of the Visitor Center Experience. It is just too good and too important of a story to be anything else. It made complete sense for us to leverage the popularity, infrastructure, and location of the existing SLE as an adjunct to Atlantis. In other words, don’t compete with it, just use it to make an even more robust and complete experience. In this case, more was gained by two related stories together, than by separating these two stories. The guest would have wondered why we split two “Shuttle Program” attractions. Thematically, it wasn’t difficult, as Atlantis tells the emotionally moving story of the people related to its creation, and uses the artifact as the heart. SLE focuses more on thrilling the audience with the power of the vehicle launch. Both are important and sit well together.  The symbolism of the Architecture encompasses both, implying both launch and landing. The architectural “planning” part was comparatively easy in the context of these other deep, artsy issues.

There has been quite a bit of debate over how the St. Louis Zoo should approach its expansion into its newly acquired property across the highway. What would you, as a zoo and attraction architect, like to see done?

The Zoo is a dear treasure to the city of St. Louis (I am a native) and the world. (It’s famous past director Marlon Perkins was the long-time host of the classic TV show Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom.) Any change to it naturally attracts scrutiny. I just want it to be properly stewarded. The highway separation creates the opportunity to relocate back-of-house functions, which, in turn, creates attraction/exhibit space contiguous to the zoo proper. That is likely to be only good for the guest experience. The talk of a boutique hotel with animal interaction as part of the experience is very exciting to me personally. We’ve been talking about doing something like this for a long time. In that case, location would be super-critical to its success. The zoo is well-run by smart people. I am certain they will make clever, wise choices.

Explorer’s Reef, new entrance to SeaWorld San Diego. Courtesy the park

Are you the evil masterminds behind the new entrance at SeaWorld San Diego? If so, what are your thoughts on the project? If not, what are your thoughts on the project? And if you’re not sure, what are your thoughts on the project?

We possess the capacity for both good and evil. We use them discretionarily to affect guest experience, and sometimes for entertainment, especially at our company’s somewhat renown gag gift exchange parties during the Holidays. These events are usually biased toward evil. Speaking as both victim and mastermind, I am proud of how much creativity we bring to bear, even when our purposes are nefarious.  Were we to be on the SeaWorld entrance project and I am not saying we are or aren’t … we couldn’t talk about it. SeaWorld employs just as strict a confidentiality policy on consultants as everyone else in this industry. However, from what I’ve read and seen about the front gate, and speaking from a personal point-of-view, the idea of re-imagining the guest’s introductory moments to the original SeaWorld Park, where that company leads the worldwide discussion on our connection to the Ocean’s animals is a pretty cool opportunity. Ya’ know … for … somebody.

MediaMation Awarded Patent for X4D Shared Drive Mechanism

Qatar Palace Home Theater X4D Cinema Seats
Qatar Palace Home Theater X4D Cinema Seats

Torrance, CA, USA — VP/CTO Dan Jamele of interactive attractions technology house MediaMation, Inc. (MMI) has been granted a U.S. patent on his innovative shared drive method used in the company’s X4D® Motion EFX Cinema Seats.  The patented pneumatic drive mechanism is key to MMI’s “master/drone” 4D cinema seats.  With one seat serving as the “master” with complicated internal digital circuitry, multiple drone seats can be attached, performing identical movements and functions to the “master” without the master seat’s internal complexities.  Besides offering the “drone” seats at a steep discount in comparison to the master seats, this allows MMI to give clients new flexibility when purchasing 4D cinema seats.  Now, exhibitors and attraction operators can order multiple configurations of one, two, three or four seats at a time to suit their exhibition space and business model.  Previously, MMI’s X4D® Motion EFX seats were only available in groupings of four seats per bench.

MMI’s Cinema Series 4D seats with the now “patent-granted” drives have already been successfully installed in motion simulator theaters in Qatar and Mexico.  Under consideration for installation by cinema chains, museums and other attractions where cost and flexibility are at a

premium, the Cinema line offers 2 Degrees of Freedom (DOF) of motion with pitch and roll.  It comes standard with seat transducers and all other 4D effects as “a la carte” options.  Air-driven and energy-efficient (versus expensive hydraulic or maintenance-heavy electrical systems), the X4D® Cinema Series seats are easy and cost-effective to maintain with off-the-shelf valves available globally.  All MMI lines of X4D® Motion EFX seats (the most basic “Cinema,” as well as the upscale “Attraction” and “Ultra” lines) provide digital motion-base servo action coupled with the latest 4D seat and atmospheric special effects.

Jamele notes: “The patent on our shared drive-mechanism is just the latest recognition MMI has received for valuable, world-class, cost-effective innovations.    Currently, we are investigating other applications for this patented technology in the cinema and amusement industries and believe it has utility in other manufacturing industries as well.”

MediaMation will be at the IAAPA Attractions Expo at Booth 1367.

Alexandria, VA, USA (Nov. 14, 2013) — Today officials from the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions (IAAPA) Family Entertainment Center Committee made three announcements regarding FEC Las Vegas which will take place March 23-25, 2014. 16 Companies Take Advantage of Early-Bird Sponsorship Opportunity
Sixteen companies that sponsored FEC Phoenix in 2013 were given an early-bird registration opportunity to sponsor the 2014 event. Here is a list of the 16 companies that have already committed to support FEC Las Vegas 2014:

Richard Long, national account sales manager for returning sponsor Benchmark Games said “[Last year] we had a chance to meet with key decision makers over two and a half days in a social networking environment, and the ‘no baloney’ information that was shared was extremely valuable. The format allowed operators and suppliers to come together and speak honestly without worrying about ‘what I am giving away’.”

Additional sponsorship opportunities, including two premium Platinum sponsorships, are still available for other IAAPA member companies on a first-come, first served basis. Interested parties should contact Brian Skepton at IAAPA ([email protected] or +1 703/299-5749). A complete list of sponsors is available at www.IAAPA.org/FECLasVegasSponsors and will be updated as new sponsors join the event.

FEC Las Vegas Participants Get Free Registration for Amusement Expo 2014
Participants in FEC Las Vegas 2014 will also get complimentary registration for Amusement Expo 2014, the annual event for the coin-op and revenue-generating amusement, music, and family entertainment industry. Amusement Expo will take place in Las Vegas March 25-27, immediately following FEC Las Vegas; the event has a new format – a three-day program, featuring one day of education and two days of exhibits. Amusement Expo 2014 will begin with a full day of “Knowledge Sessions” on March 25.  These sessions will address timely topics and provide useful information for all who attend. Two full days of exhibit time will follow on March 26 and 27. Additional information about Amusement Expo is available at www.amusementexpo.org.

“The AAMA and AMOA are excited to join Amusement Expo with IAAPA’s FEC Las Vegas for a valuable week of education and events in March 2014,” said AAMA Executive Vice President John Schultz and AMOA Executive Vice President Jack Kelleher, Amusement Expo co-organizers. “We are working together to provide a great experience for the FEC community and overall amusement industry. The energy and networking from these combined events will help jumpstart participants’ 2014.”

Matt has spent 24 years in the attractions industry. Starting as a ride operator at Canobie Lake Park just out of high school, Matt has enjoyed a robust career around the industry with leadership positions at Canobie, Knott’s Camp Snoopy, Valleyfair, and Smiles Entertainment Center, an FEC in Connecticut.
