Electrosonic Upgrades Technology at National WWI Museum

Los Angeles, CA, USA – As the centennial of World War I continues to be celebrated worldwide, the National World War I Museum and Memorial in Kansas City, Missouri, underwent an audio-visual technology upgrade with support from Electrosonic. Nine years ago, Electrosonic designed and installed the facility’s original AV system; the company recently returned to replace all the museum’s displays and head-end drive equipment.

The National World War I Museum and Memorial tells the story of The Great War and related global events from 1914 through the 1918 Armistice and 1919 Paris Peace Conference. It has been designated by Congress as America’s official museum and memorial dedicated to World War I.

“Equipment has really advanced in the ten years since our initial install,” says Electrosonic project manager John Meyer. “While the upgrade was seamless to visitors, we were able to reduce the number of components in the system by a huge amount. At least 30 percent of the behind-the-scenes hardware has been eliminated. That means fewer points of failure and greater streamlining for the museum’s technical staff.”

At the core of the museum is the Horizon Theater, which features a life-sized diorama and 100-foot wide panoramic screen. A video presentation tells visitors about the events leading to America’s entry into the war while the No Man’s Land diorama in front of the screen depicts a British patrol across a barren landscape littered with authentic objects from the conflict.

To deliver the video, six 5700 ANSI lumen projectors are edge blended to fill the screen with seamless images. Previously, the projectors were fed and synchronized by individual players, which went through a warp and blend machine, Meyer notes. “Now, video playback and edge blending are done in Dataton’s WATCHOUT video server. We’ve replaced eight pieces of hardware with one unit.”

Electrosonic also installed six High End Systems DLV projectors on moving light pedestals; they move images around the diorama and replace older High End Systems DL1 units.

The entire theater system is controlled by Medialon Manager LITE software, a network-driven technology that is “a big advance over the old equipment,” Meyer says. “We also added new HP 3500 Series network switches, which are so much faster and cleaner – they have eliminated a lot of bottlenecks.”

The museum’s permanent Main Gallery gives a comprehensive journey through the war. There are numerous interactives, ranging from personal kiosks to 46-inch LCD touchscreens, enabling visitors to discover the workings of a Lewis machine gun, the uses of camouflage and how to make their own poster. Many of the interactives were upgraded with solid state technology. “The use of solid state drives in 30 PCs and in BrightSign players now offers increased reliability,” says Meyer.

QSC’s Q-Sys handles audio routing and processing throughout the museum; it includes the audio playback option to further simplify the system. “Q-Sys has allowed us to eliminate perhaps two full racks of equipment,” Meyer notes. The museum’s amplifiers and speakers remain the same.

Electrosonic also has a service contract for the site and has placed a full time on-site technician.

“The Museum was very pleased with the technological upgrades to our organization facilitated by Electrosonic,” said National World War I Museum and Memorial President and CEO Dr. Matthew Naylor. “Electrosonic managed a tremendous amount of upgrades in a timely, efficient and professional manner.”

National Days at world expos: How much ice cream for 800 people?

Logistics92_3by James Ogul, author of Tales From the Expo

[dropcap color=”#888″ type=”square”]M[/dropcap]ilan Expo 2015, a world’s fair sanctioned by the Bureau of International Exhibitions, is underway. The six-month event opened May 1, will close Oct 31, and in its first month attracted 3 million visits.

145 countries are participating with 53 self-built pavilions ranging in size up to 50,000 square feet. Visitors not only get to see all these pavilions and their exhibits, but also to enjoy the myriad of events that take place throughout the expo.

Chief among these events are the National Days of each participating country. Any pavilion staff will tell you that their country’s National Day is their most worked on and carefully programmed event of the entire expo.

National Day activities include official ceremonies, parades and visits by Logistics92_1high-ranking officials. Often the guest of honor is a head of state, and the coordination of those visits is a major undertaking that has to be planned down to the minutest detail.

The heads of state presiding over National Days at Milan 2015 in just the first four weeks after opening day represented Monaco (Prince Albert II), China (Vice Premier Wang Yang), Estonia (President Toomas Hendirk llves), Russia (President Vladimir Putin), Italy (President Sergio Mattarella),  Swiss Confederation (President Simonetta Sommaruga),  Spain (President Mariano Rajoy Brey),  Republic of Ecuador (President Rafael Correa),  Columbia (President Juan Manuel Santos), and Mexico (President Enrique Pena Nieto).

Many more will come through before closing day. And these visits are not Logistics92_2just ceremonial.  Real diplomacy takes place and international alliances can be strengthened. Here is an account of China’s Vice Premier Wang Yang’s recent visit to Milan in celebration of China’s National Day:  http://news.xinhuanet.com/english/2015-06/08/c_134308326.htm

National Day programs are “all hands on deck” for any pavilion staff and are both exhilarating and exhausting.  From my own experience (decades of organizing US Pavilions) I can tell you that there is a tremendous buildup of anticipation before, and a collective sigh of fulfillment and relief after a National Day.

The illustrations show an example from my not-so-distant past – some excerpts of the logistics plan for the US Pavilion’s National Day at Seville Expo 92 (see illustrations).  The guest of honor was Marilyn Quayle, wife of Logistics92_4then Vice President Dan Quayle, and the Masters of Ceremony for our National Day cultural show at the Palenque (the expo amphitheater) were actors Barbara Eden and Tony Randall.

The producer for our National Day show at Seville ’92 was Dan Markley who had just produced the Broadway hit “Stomp,” and is currently the Executive Director and Producer of the New York Musical Theater Festival. Dan and I spent a lot of time in close quarters planning the National Day ceremony and I can attest to the many hours of work in putting such a show together.

You can follow the National Day programs at Milan Expo 2015 here: http://magazine.expo2015.org/en/national-days – there are more than 100 set to take place through Oct 31.

Logistics92_6One of the strengths of a world’s fair is its power to attract high-level officials from throughout the world. And the international diplomacy that can take place at such a “roll up your shirt sleeves” venue can be remarkable.

Critics continue to question the value of these events in the modern age, but to those of us with hands-on experience there is little doubt that world expositions provide unparalleled opportunity to forge important bonds between the host country and the participating countries – and from participating country to participating country.

Graham Beal and Detroit Institute of Arts Awarded Inaugural AAM Chair’s Leadership Award

Washington, DC, USA — The American Alliance of Museums (AAM) announces that Director, President and CEO Graham W.J. Beal and the Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA) Board of Directors are the first recipients of AAM’s Chair’s Leadership Award. The award is not presented annually; rather, it is reserved for rare occasion of outstanding leadership and extraordinary accomplishments in the museum field.

Kaywin Feldman, chair of the AAM Board of Directors, presented the honor to Beal and the DIA Board during the Association of Art Museum Directors (AAMD) Annual Meeting in Detroit last week.

The Chair’s Leadership Award acknowledges Beal’s 16 years of service as director of the DIA. Retiring this month, Beal’s legacy includes the landmark $185-million renovation and reinstallation of the collection that transformed the museum – boosting attendance and support above and beyond any other point in its 130-year history. Beal and the DIA leadership team completed the capital project while steering the museum through a series of crises, from the financial crash of 2008 to Detroit’s bankruptcy in 2013.

“The award to the DIA is in recognition of the museum’s exceptional work in engaging its public through expansion, experimental installation and resilience during a time of controversy,” said Feldman. “In the wake of the city’s recent financial crisis, Graham and his staff and board worked tirelessly to ensure the long-term sustainability of the DIA, a remarkable community asset. They are truly an inspiration to the entire museum community.”

“The Board of Directors and I thank AAM for this award from our museum colleagues,” said Beal. “During my tenure at the DIA, our board and staff worked tirelessly during unprecedented challenges to ensure the DIA will continue our mission of helping each visitor find personal meaning in art for generations to come.”

ABOUT GRAHAM W.J. BEAL

Beal has been the director, president and CEO of the Detroit Institute of Arts since 1999. Since joining the DIA’s leadership, Beal has overseen two major capital campaigns, guided the reinstallation of the museum’s world-renowned collection and overseen the museum’s renovation and expansion.

Beal has continued to build on the museum’s reputation and has strengthened relationships with some of the world’s most well-regarded institutions through loans and programming supported by the museum’s collection. Under Beal’s leadership the DIA has co-organized exhibitions such as Van Gogh: Face to Face in 2000 and Magnificenza! The Medici, Michelangelo and the Art of Late Renaissance Florence in 2003. Also in 2003, Beal curated the popular exhibition On the Edge: Contemporary Art from the DaimlerChrysler Collection.

Prior to his tenure at the DIA, Beal served as director of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art from 1996 to 1999. He held the position of director of the Joslyn Art Museum in Omaha, Nebraska from 1989 to 1996 and served as chief curator at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art from 1984 to 1989. Beal has published many exhibition catalogs, books, and articles including an exhibition catalogue on the DIA’s American paintings.

FROM THE DETROIT FREE PRESS

“Beal’s retirement comes after an extraordinarily stressful 18 months…The museum’s leadership team fiercely defended itself against creditors pushing for a sale of art. Beal also battled Detroit emergency manager Kevyn Orr before the pensions-and-art rescue plan known as the grand bargain emerged and turned them from adversaries into allies – while also granting the DIA its long-sought independence from city ownership.”

BRC Imagination Arts Brings the Soul of Nashville to Historic Ryman Auditorium

Nashville, TN, USA — Ryman Hospitality Properties has unveiled its $14 million Ryman Auditorium expansion and daytime tour attraction, which begins with a state-of-the-art theater experience titled “Soul of Nashville.” Visitors are immersed in the Ryman’s legendary history as the room brings to life more than a century of legendary performances and a new collaboration featuring Darius Rucker, The Fisk Jubilee Singers, Sheryl Crow and Vince Gill. Once “Soul of Nashville” has provided an introduction to the Ryman story, visitors enjoy five new exhibits: “Workin’ on a Building,” “Showplace of the South,” “Mother Church of Country Music,” “Ryman Stage to Screen” and “Ryman Renaissance.” Guests will see genuine artifacts and enjoy videos with hosts Charles Esten, Marty Stuart, Nicole Kidman, Ricky Skaggs, Robin Roberts and Trisha Yearwood taking them through each chapter of the Ryman’s illustrious history.

“When you see the Ryman’s past come to life in such an innovative way, it’s hard to imagine that this building was nearly lost to history just 20 years ago,” said Colin Reed chairman and chief executive officer of Ryman Hospitality Properties, Inc. “As more and more people from all corners of the world discover what Nashville has to offer, we now have a fully-immersive way to share with them just how important the Ryman is to Nashville, our artist community and to the people who visit this great city. The continued investments our company has made in the Ryman Auditorium are a testament to the fact that this building should and will live on forever as the most important Nashville icon.”

“To say there is no other place like the Ryman is an understatement,” said Sally Williams, Ryman Auditorium general manager. “The story of this building is so powerful and emotional— we needed an extraordinary way to take visitors on our nearly 125-year journey. The “Soul of Nashville” and our new exhibits do that job beautifully.”

“The Ryman Auditorium is one of the great music venues in the world and is synonymous with Nashville’s brand as Music City,” Mayor Karl Dean said. “This expansion is a testament to the strength of our music industry and our cultural significance. Thank you to Colin and Ryman Hospitality Properties for your leadership and confidence in our city.”

The original 1892 auditorium remained untouched during the renovation. Nashville- based firms Hastings Architecture Associates and R.C. Mathews Contractor headed up the $14 million project.

Soul of Nashville Tour Experience

“Soul of Nashville” kicks off the reimagined Ryman daytime tour experience in a new 100-seat theater custom built for the show. Created by BRC Imagination Arts of California, “Soul of Nashville” utilizes cutting edge technology to surround the audience with moving images on multiple projector planes and sound that engulfs the senses and puts them in the center of the show. Through special effects, archival images and footage, performers from the Ryman’s past become multidimensional right before the viewer’s eyes.

“The opportunity to put guests inside the history of the Ryman has been one of the most satisfying experiences in our 33 year history,” said Brad Shelton, creative director of BRC Imagination Arts. “We’re immensely proud to be a part of it.”

The show culminates in a finale that delivers a montage of photos, posters and video footage from the Ryman’s contemporary history since reopening 20 years ago. Seamlessly, the energy captured in those performances transitions into a new arrangement of the traditional song, “Workin’ on a Building,” featuring a magnificent performance by the acclaimed Fisk Jubilee singers, who have a history with the Ryman dating back to 1892, and soloists Darius Rucker, Sheryl Crow and Vince Gill. The choir and stars appear larger-than-life on the screens as if performing a concert right in the room. By design, this experience makes an emotional connection with the audience who will then exit the theater and begin the rest of their tour experience.

“Soul of Nashville” Host Lula C. Naff

“Soul of Nashville” is hosted by a virtual Lula C. Naff, the Ryman’s longtime promoter and manager (1904-1955.) A remarkable woman not widely known today, Naff’s business and booking savvy garnered prestige for both Ryman Auditorium and the city of Nashville as a performance arts center for the region. Known as the “first lady” of theater management, she brought the greatest performers and Broadway plays of the day to the Ryman including: Bob Hope, Charlie Chaplin, Enrico Caruso, Harry Houdini, Katharine Hepburn, Mae West, Ziegfeld Follies, “Guys and Dolls,” “Oklahoma!” and many more. Naff also ushered the Grand Ole Opry into the Ryman in 1943, where the show resided until 1974. Under her leadership, the Ryman became a showplace for great diversity, a tradition that continues today. She was also a trailblazer for working women, branching out on her own before women even had the right to vote.

New Exhibits

“Workin’ on a Building”

Video host Trisha Yearwood tells of the famed meeting between Thomas Green Ryman and Samuel Porter Jones, and the inspiration that led to the construction of one of the nation’s grandest tabernacles. On display are artifacts documenting Ryman’s life, construction of the building and events that took place during the early years of the Union Gospel Tabernacle.

“Showplace of the South”

Most know of the Grand Ole Opry’s time in the Ryman, but some may not be aware of the performances that graced the stage long before the radio show arrived. Video host Nicole Kidman shares the fascinating story of the Ryman’s transition from a revival hall into a premier performing arts venue. At the forefront was longtime manager Lula C. Naff.

“Mother Church of Country Music”

The Ryman acquired a new identity when a soon-to-be world-famous radio program found itself in search of a new home. The Ryman’s new tenant brought a whole new fan base into the pews when they began broadcasting their clear-channel signal coast to coast from the stage of the old “Mother Church.” Hear firsthand accounts from Opry members Marty Stuart and Ricky Skaggs as they host the exhibit video, enjoy rare performance footage and see stage costumes and instruments on display.

“Ryman Stage to Screen”

Many remember hearing the sounds of the Opry resonating over the airwaves but do not realize how many times the Ryman has appeared on the big screen. Visitors will see clips from the concert tapings, television episodes and major motion pictures that have used the Ryman as their setting during a video hosted by Charles Esten. From “Coal Miner’s Daughter” to television’s “Nashville,” “Honkytonk Man” to “American Idol,” the Ryman has served as an important backdrop for many filmmaking projects over the years.

“Ryman Renaissance”

The last stop on the tour is an exhibit dedicated to the ongoing legacy of the Ryman. Video host Robin Roberts shares recent Ryman history and relates the importance of its continued tradition. Today, the Ryman hosts 200-250 events annually, and, just like the generations of the past, people sit in the same wooden pews to see the greats of their day perform and breathe new life into the room.

Cafe Lula

In another nod to Lula Naff, a new restaurant has been added bearing her name, Cafe Lula. With floor-to-ceiling glass windows on three sides and a covered patio, the cafe, located just outside the Ryman’s main entrance, will cater to tour visitors, concert-goers, downtown office workers and residents alike.

Cafe Lula is open daily from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. with extended hours during Ryman events. Serving Springer Mountain Farms chicken, the menu features fresh, healthy fare with an emphasis on rotisserie cooking and locally-sourced ingredients available for both dine-in and grab-and-go service. The cafe also includes an espresso bar featuring locally roasted and specially blended coffees, which transforms into a full service bar each afternoon.

Retail

As part of the renovation, the Ryman has doubled the size of its gift shop. The new store offers exclusive Ryman-branded items as well as an activity station where visitors can make their own custom t-shirts and posters and listen to music before they purchase. Users also have the opportunity to shop the Ryman e-commerce site at the activity station.

Primeview Partnering with DigiGage to Bring Digital Experiences to Elevators

New York City, NY, USA — Primeview USA, a leader in advanced display solutions, has teamed up with DigiGage, creator of digitally transparent elevator software, to bring high quality digital experiences for elevator riders globally.  Primeview industrial displays, that feature 24/7 durability, will be integrated into elevator cabs together with the DigiGage elevator software for viewers to experience unique content as they travel from one floor to the next.

“With millions of elevators around the globe, digital screens are an integral part of the future of elevator-cabs’ interior design. Together DigiGage and Primeview turn the screens into virtual windows. DigiGage provides the software and the sensory technology that detects the movement of the elevator and adjusts the content accordingly and controls the information layer while Primeview provides the custom display technology that synchronizes with the DigiGage software for high impact and quality visual experiences,” says Ben Kidron, Co-Founder, COO and President of DigiGage.

The DigiGage system is first and foremost a design product that answers the unmet needs of the cab user’s experience.  Without being connected to the elevator system, the DigiGage software and sensor analyzes in real time the height, speed and floor locations of the elevator and adjusts the digital view in correlation with the elevator movement, thus turning the display into a digital window. On top of the design features, there is an entire information layer that includes building messages, floor based messages, floor numbering, news feeds and social media. The system is controlled from the cloud, by the building, using any internet connected device (even a mobile smartphone).

Primeview provides a dynamic variety of display technology for the elevator solution with Mirror OLED displays, 4K Ultra HD displays, and LED LCD Video Wall displays with IPS (in-place switching) for portrait and landscape modes. Primeview brings advanced engineering, manufacturing capabilities and global support to service all applications regardless of the project locations.

“The collaboration between PrimeView and Digigage will make it easier than ever for building owners to implement interactive displays and enhance consumer experience by providing ultra-high-definition immersive experiences for riders. In line with the company’s strategic initiatives, PrimeView continues to demonstrate the innovation and leadership necessary to offer performance consistent with the demanding specifications desired by all types of industrial applications,” said Chanan Averbuch, Senior Vice President of The Americas at Primeview USA.

Primeview USA will be exhibiting at InfoComm 2015, booth #2066, and will showcase a full line of display technology and the DigiGage software. To see the elevator solution first hand, email [email protected] for a booth demo.

UPDATED: Proposed Ban on Whale and Dolphin Captivity Headed to Canadian Senate

Ottawa, ON, Canada (June 12, 2015) — On June 11, Senator Wilfred Moore (Liberal Party) of Nova Scotia and Green Party Leader and Parliamentarian Elizabeth May of British Columbia announced their intent to introduce the “Ending of Captivity of Whales and Dolphins Act,” which would ban captivity of cetaceans within Canadian jurisdiction.  The proposal follows the May 28 passage of the “Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Amendment Act,” which placed a ban on the further acquisition and breeding of killer whales within the province, affecting solely Marineland of Canada in Niagara Falls, and set the stage for more stringent regulation and enforcement. IPM EXCLUSIVE: SeaWorld Defends Itself Against California Bill to Ban Killer Whales in Parks

[/tab]

[tab title=”Ontario Legislation”]Toronto, ON, Canada (May 28, 2015) — Today the province passed the Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Amendment Act, which will prohibit the acquisition and breeding of orcas (killer whales) in Ontario effective immediately.

To ensure the province continues to have the strongest animal protection legislation in Canada, the bill contains a number of other measures to improve the oversight and well-being of all marine mammals in Ontario. This includes:

  • –Rules that allow the government to require animal welfare committees at any facility that houses marine mammals
  • –Rules that allow the government to require facilities that house marine mammals to have qualified veterinarians with expertise in marine mammal medicine to oversee preventive and clinical care
  • –Penalties of up to $60,000 and/or two years in prison on first conviction for breaches of the Act

The province is also working on setting specific standards of care for marine mammals which will reflect advice from an expert report by Dr. David Rosen, a University of British Columbia marine biologist, and recommendations from a technical advisory group. When introduced, Ontario will be the first jurisdiction in Canada to set specific standards of care for marine mammals.

The amendments complete a three-point plan initiated in October 2012 to strengthen protection for all animals[/tab]
[tab title=”Oct. 2, 2014 Senate Transcript”]Hon. Wilfred P. Moore: My question today is for the Leader of the Government in the Senate. Leader, this note and question are from Ms. Caroline McNaught of Ottawa, Ontario, and she says:

Like me, many of you have likely heard of — if not seen — the 2013 documentary Blackfish, which details the suffering of captive killer whales in marine parks. Earlier this year, in response to that film, a California state legislator introduced legislation to phase out and eventually ban the keeping of killer whales in captivity.

In Canada, Marineland and the Vancouver Aquarium currently keep over 40 whales and dolphins in captivity — including beluga whales, dolphins, and a killer whale. These creatures are highly intelligent and social, and they ordinarily swim vast distances every day. Yet Canadian law currently allows whales and dolphins to be kept in pools to perform tricks for paying customers. Evidence has shown that this practice causes unjustifiable suffering, and that is why countries like Chile, Costa Rica, and India have banned the keeping of whales and dolphins in captivity.

Many other countries have imposed restrictions on imports and exports, unlike Canada, which has minimal restrictions on imports and does not regulate exports, allowing the Vancouver Aquarium to loan belugas to SeaWorld in the U.S. for captive breeding.

The Mayor of Vancouver and Jane Goodall have now called for an end to keeping the whales and dolphins in captivity at the Vancouver Aquarium, and The Toronto Star has been running an investigative report into the notorious conditions at Marineland.

My question, leader, it’s the question of Ms. McNaught: “Would this government support amending our animal cruelty provisions to phase out and eventually ban keeping whales and dolphins in captivity in Canada?”

Hon. Claude Carignan (Leader of the Government): Thank you, Senator Moore, for your question. You too have the option of introducing a bill if you think something needs to be fixed and that some legislative measure could be the cause of the problem.

Our government is committed to protecting the environment. Since we formed government, we have created two national marine conservation areas, three marine protected areas, three national wildlife areas, two national parks and one national historic site. We believe that the creation of these marine areas and protected areas will really help protect other marine species that could be at risk, including the ones you mentioned.

Senator Moore: Leader, are you suggesting that the program of your government is to eventually ban keeping whales and dolphins in captivity and that they should be released in these wonderful natural parks that you’ve created?

Senator Carignan: The government’s position when it comes to the conservation of marine areas involves creating parks or marine protected areas that help protect marine species, including the whales you mentioned. Senator, if you think this situation needs to be corrected, you always have the option of introducing a Senate private member’s bill to take corrective action. The Senate could then examine it, as it does all other bills.

Senator Moore: I have a supplementary question. I realize that any senator can bring in a bill, leader. I’m asking you, what is the position of your government with regard to the eventual banning of keeping whales and dolphins, cetaceans, in captivity in Canada?

Senator Carignan: Senator Moore, the government’s legislative intentions are made public in due form as our bills are introduced. As you know, the details of the government’s legislative intentions are revealed either through the Speech from the Throne, delivered here in this chamber, or through the introduction of legislation.

You can check the government’s intentions by looking at the relevant legislative instruments.

Senator Moore: I recall the Speech from the Throne with respect to protecting marine-sensitive parklands — I guess we can call them that, that is, the real estate in the waters, but I’m asking about the cetaceans, the whales and the dolphins, and whether or not you would be prepared to include them in your environmental legislation and policies. Are you saying this will lead to a phase-out — not an immediate ban — but a phase-out and a ban of keeping whales and dolphins in captivity in Canada?

You may not have the answer to that today, but I don’t think the answer is to tell me to bring in a bill. I’m asking you about the policy of your government, and I respect what you’ve done so far. I think it’s going in the right direction. I’d like you to follow up on that and let me know, if you can’t do it today, what the policy is. Maybe it hasn’t been thought of. This issue has come to light in the recent past, so maybe you haven’t had a chance to look at it. If you have not, I understand, but I’d like you to take a look at it, come back and let us know what the policy of the government is with regard to that question.

Senator Carignan: As I said earlier, our government is taking action to protect the environment, marine areas and humpback whales. You’ve probably heard about the important decision — based on scientific data — that was made on the humpback whale population, which continues to grow. I’ve spoken about this already, because we are seeing a constant increase in the number of humpback whales. These whales remain protected as a result of solid provisions in the Fisheries Act and in the Species at Risk Act. Our government is also taking action by creating protected areas. If you believe that a piece of legislation can improve that protection, I invite you to introduce a private member’s bill so that we can debate it.[/tab]
[tab title=”Moore Press Release”]Ottawa, ON, Canada (June 11, 2015) – Senator Wilfred Moore has announced a federal bill to phase out the keeping of whales and dolphins in captivity. “Keeping whales and dolphins in captivity is unjustifiably cruel,” said Senator Moore. “We should do the right thing and end the practice in Canada.” Senator Moore, a member of the Senate Liberal Caucus, will table the bill in the Senate this afternoon. He and several stakeholders – including Green Party Leader Elizabeth May – will offer details at a press conference today at 12:15 pm in the National Press Theater in Ottawa.

Senator Moore’s bill has the support of Gabriela Cowperthwaite, director of the CNN-distributed documentary Blackfish, which outlines the suffering of captive orcas. It also has the support of four ex-whale and dolphin trainers; Dr. Marc Bekoff of the Jane Goodall Institute; the Canadian Federation of Humane Societies; the British Columbia Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals; and Zoocheck Canada (see below for quotes).

The Ending the Captivity of Whales and Dolphins Act prohibits captive breeding, imports, exports, and live captures of all whales, dolphins, and porpoises in Canada. The bill allows for the rescue of injured individuals. It builds on a recent Ontario law, which phases out keeping orcas in captivity (currently, there is one captive orca at Marineland in Niagara Falls, and approximately 50 beluga whales and dolphins at that facility and the Vancouver Aquarium).

Gabriela Cowperthwaite, Director of Blackfish

“I made Blackfish because I wanted to understand why a trainer came to be killed by a killer whale. I did not come from animal activism and had even taken my kids to SeaWorld. I simply had a question. I soon learned the heartbreaking story of orcas in captivity. All whales and dolphins suffer in marine parks, and seeing these incredible creatures reduced to performing tricks has no social, educational, or conservational value. It is time for us to evolve. I hope Canadians get behind Senator Moore’s bill and end this practice.”

This bill also has the support of three ex-SeaWorld trainers who appeared in Blackfish: John Hargrove, Samantha Berg, and Jeff Ventre.

Phil Demers, former Head Trainer at Marineland

“As a former Marine Mammal Trainer, I believe the bill to ban cetacean captivity and breeding in Canada is imperative and long-overdue. I have witnessed the physiological and emotional consequences captivity imposes on these magnificent beings, and those who care for them. No living being should be forced to endure what I’ve witnessed, and it’s my hope that this bill will finally put an end to these cruel practices.”

Dr. Marc Bekoff, Ethics Committee for the Jane Goodall Institute

“Science has clearly established that whales and dolphins suffer deep and enduring psychological and physical harms in captivity. The practice is ethically indefensible, and Senator Moore’s proposed ban would be a timely and important change in Canadian law. These highly intelligent, emotional, and social species deserve to live free in the wild, where they belong.”

Canadian Federation of Humane Societies

“Canadians do not support the archaic practice of confining and breeding whales and dolphins for the purpose of our entertainment. This bill puts Canada in a leadership position by advancing marine mammal science without exacting a cost to individual animals.”

This bill also has the support of the British Columbia Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

Zoocheck Canada

“This Bill will address Canada’s outdated and inconsistent laws regarding the importation and possession of whales and dolphins and will bring Canada into lockstep with other progressive jurisdictions around the world that have moved to address cetacean captivity issues. But, perhaps most importantly, it will finally address the deprivation and suffering that these animals endure in tanks and pools.”

Senator Wilfred Moore

“I hope all parliamentarians and candidates will back this going into the election. Bottom line, whales should not be kept in swimming pools.”[/tab]

[tab title=”Marineland Response”]Niagara Falls, ON, Canada (June 11, 2015) — Senator Moore from Nova Scotia and Elizabeth May from British Columbia have introduced a bill today that has as its primary effect, throwing thousands of Ontarians out of work and diverting the one million visitors a year Marineland attracts to the Niagara Region to their own constituencies on either coast.

This Bill is a bicoastal job creation and tourism bill at the expense of Ontario, costing thousands of jobs inNiagara Falls and Niagara Region, and robbing the average people of Ontario from a fair opportunity to see our marine mammals.

When asked, Senator Moore said he was unaware of any economic impact his proposed bill will have on employment in Ontario of the people of Ontario.

This bill is all about promoting tourism for Senator Moore’s and Ms. May’s constituencies, and eliminating any competition.

Numerous independent studies and investigations have all concluded that the marine mammals at Marineland are healthy and well taken care of.

Dr. Noonan, an Academic Biologist with a specialty in Animal Behaviour and forty one years of experience conducting research in Animal Behaviour and Behavioural Neuroscience gave evidence at the Committee Hearings for Ontario’s Bill 80 as follows:

“The data from my research program at Marineland (of the Beluga Whales) indicate the following:

a.

Behavioural indices of stress are very low

b.

High reproductive rates suggest psychological well being

c.

The belugas are able to express much of their natural behavioural repertoire

d.

High incidence of playful behaviour suggests positive affect is predominant.”

The Ontario Government recognizes these facts and is putting in place appropriate scientific standards of care for all our marine mammals, so everyone in Ontario has a chance to see our unique marine mammals at Marineland.

It is clear that Senator Moore and Ms. May are focused on Tourism and know little about the whales they express so much concern about.

In fact, Senator Moore clearly knew little or nothing about Beluga Whales, publicly suggesting that there are only 880 Beluga Whales in Canada.

Fisheries and Oceans Canada reported in March of 2015 that “It is roughly estimated that between 72,000 and 144,000 belugas live in Canadian waters.” Over 50,000 of them live in Ontario.  A far cry from 880.

Senator Moore and Ms. May were also quick to refer to Beluga Whales as “deep diving”, but failed to note the accepted scientific understanding of Belugas, “The majority of predicted habitat along the coast is consistent with Beluga behaviour in which they generally utilize shallow coastal waters, barely deep enough to cover their bodies.” (Ridgway and Harrison) (Goetz et al, 2012).

In fact, “River estuaries are very important summer habitat for Beluga.  The whales rely on estuaries for a number of habitat functions, which may include foraging, moulting and nursery habitat, thermal advantage and protection from predators.” (The Beluga Management Plan, Ontario, Ministry of Natural Resources, 2013).

Most studies show a strong preference for Beluga Whales to remain on the surface or spend the vast majority of their time diving to depths of no more than 4 meters.

It is noted “The preference of this population for shallow water in summer is not dictated by an inability to dive to greater depths.” (Martin, Hall, Richard, 2000).

Beluga Whales only leave shallow estuaries when forced to by pack ice, returning immediately to shallow waters when the ice breaks up, and are able to dive to great depths, in part to avoid being eaten by their primary predator, Killer Whales.

Senator Moore and Ms. May shifted the focus of their press conference almost immediately to Marineland, and it is clear that the purpose of their Bill is to eliminate any opportunity for any Canadian (particularly Ontarians) to view or visit any Whale or Dolphin in Canada anywhere except in their ridings on the west or east coast.

The focus on Marineland is clear from the way they arranged for Mr. Demers to attend, whose catalogue of conspiracy theory and mass animal abuse allegations, have been unequivocally proven to be completely false after careful independent and thorough reviews by multiple separate teams of experts in marine mammals from a host of Government agencies.  Mr. Demers appears to be motivated solely by revenge against Marineland over rejection of his proposal to Marineland that he star in a reality TV show featuring Marineland’s animals.  He didn’t make a single allegation of abuse in twelve years until his reality TV show dream was crushed.  Mr. Demers’ primary role at Marineland was feeding fish to marine mammals, under direct supervision, and his formal marine mammal qualifications are non-existent, as his education did not extend beyond graduating from high school.  Relying on Mr. Demers with respect to marine mammal health and welfare is like relying solely on the opinion of a hospital orderly regarding the medical care of patients in a hospital, and deliberately disregarding specialist physicians and nurses.

Mr. Moore, and Ms. May, used their Press Conference to encourage tourism to their constituencies and to suggest that the best way to see any whale or dolphin is to do it from a boat.

While a visit to the East of West Coast is amazing, it is a visit that is well beyond the financial means of most average families in Ontario, and not the type of expenditure any family is generally prepared to make to view a whale or dolphin.  Many families on the West or East coast decline to participate in very expensive whale watching trips in their own communities.  Why should Ontarians be denied the opportunity to visit Marineland  at a fraction of the cost?

It is ridiculous to suggest, as Ms. May and Mr. Moore have, that the average Ontarian should be forced to spend thousands of dollars to jet their whole families out to either coast to participate in a high end expensive whale watching event just so their children can see a dolphin or Beluga Whale.

As we all know, there are no guarantees you will see anything whale watching from a boat and may only learn what it is like to be seasick.

Furthermore, whale watching is far more stressful for any whale than visiting them at Marineland.  As Dr. Noonannoted: “Behavioural indices of stress are very low” among Beluga Whales at Marineland.  To the contrary, it has been noted that:

“The cumulative effect of changing behaviours, displacement, or the chronic stress induced by exposure to whale watching activity may translate into decline in health and vital rates.”

That is why Marineland continues to welcome almost a million visitors a year to view marine mammals that cannot be viewed anywhere else except at enormous expense, if they can be viewed at all.

Since Marineland opened over fifty years ago, we have hosted, educated and entertained literally millions of young people and families.

We have heard from many marine biologists, veterinarians, conservationists and oceanographers that it was their childhood experience at Marineland that inspired them to learn more about the wonders of the ocean and its amazing aquatic life.  Ontario’s children who come to visit and learn about animals they might never know existed will grow up to the champions of the wild cousins of the animals you find at places like Marineland.

Marineland notes that the Bill forces immediate closure of all marine mammal facilities, which demonstrates the lack of care or thought for marine mammals that went into this Bill.

All of the Killer Whale, dolphins and majority of Beluga Whales were, long ago, classified as wild capture, and as a consequence cannot be legally relocated anywhere.  This Bill mandates their execution by legislation.  No sea pens exist that can house Beluga Whales as all Arctic bays are choked with ice for half the year.

Even the most prominent activist in the United States, Naomi Rose, on behalf of the Humane Society of the United States, recognizes these issues and has publicly stated:

“We are proposing a phasing out of orca exhibition, taking as long as three decades, giving Oceanaria sufficient time to repurpose their orca enclosures. We believe this is eminently reasonable and will minimize the financial impacts of ending this practice.”

Naomi Rose, September 2011

This Bill is an opportunistic effort to shut Marineland to unfairly attempt to benefit one group of Canadians at the expense of another.

Marineland notes that this is a private senator Bill and Marineland trusts that the Government will act responsibly in the interests of all Canadians and reject this ill-informed, unscientific, misguided, and transparent effort to enrich Mr. Moore’s and Ms. May’s own ridings at the expense of all Ontarians.[/tab]
