Founded March 3, 1964, Electrosonic Turns 50
A key element of Electrosonic’s success, and one that we are very proud of, is our long and enduring relationship with designers, suppliers and customers. — Jim Bowie
Los Angeles (March 3, 2014) – Electrosonic announces that March 2014 marks the 50th anniversary of the company’s founding. In 1964 the company started with two rooms in London’s Greenwich vegetable market. Five decades later, Electrosonic is an international, multi-million dollar business with headquarters in Burbank, California, and offices worldwide.

Electrosonic’s story is complex but in many ways it parallels the history of audio-visual technology, and provides a window into how the industry and its services and products have changed.

Founded by Denis Naisbitt, Michael Ray and Robert Simpson, the company opened with the strapline “Electronic Control and Audio Systems”. From the start, Electrosonic combined the manufacturing and selling of products with the building of complete engineered systems. Key product categories included electronic lighting control, multi-image slide projection and videowalls. The product and systems portions of the business continued together through 2010 when the products side of the business, which by then represented a small portion of overall revenue, was sold.

“The 50 year anniversary marks an important milestone for the company as we look back on our incredible heritage of talent and accomplishments. Electrosonic is continually investing in new generations of talented staff through mentoring and education as we continue to push the limits of what AV technology can do,” says Jim Bowie, President of Electrosonic Group.

Electrosonic carried out many impressive and memorable projects over the last 50 years all around the world, from multi-image spectaculars in 1970s Iran and the world’s biggest videowall in Seville in 1992 to massive projection displays at EXPO 2010 in Shanghai. Electrosonic was often leading the way in applying new technology, whether it was pushing 70mm film to the limit, implementing multi-channel dynamic sound systems, or achieving huge 3D images with the latest electronic projectors.

Electrosonic’s historical project portfolio can be best summarized as embracing world EXPOs, lighting control, theater sound systems, experience shows, museums and visitor centers, theme parks, videowalls, control rooms and corporate AV.

World EXPO, or international exposition, work was a key business driver for Electrosonic from the start. Exposition work, starting with EXPO 67 Montreal, instilled in Electrosonic the desire to work internationally. More importantly, many influential people from around the world saw the shows, which in turn led to demands to emulate the work at home and globally. Electrosonic would go on to carry out installations in 15 different EXPOs.

In its present role as designer and integrator of complex systems, Electrosonic continues to exploit advances in technology. The business today serves three market sectors, each of which is treated on a global basis. The largest is “Entertainment”, followed by “Corporate” and “Control Rooms”. Beyond system engineering, Electrosonic has always offered ancillary services to further assist its clients. Today these include support services, managed services and technical design consulting.

Electrosonic will release a book about its history in late March 2014, with the title “Electrosonic – 50 Years on the Audio-Visual Frontline”. Written by co-founder Robert Simpson, the book presents a short history of the company, and chapters on its products, notable projects completed, its people and on the company’s contributions to the AV industry.

Kentucky’s Ark Encounter to Begin Construction
With the funding in place to build the Ark, it is now our goal to raise an additional $15 million in donations to provide additional attractions like the special high-tech and interactive exhibits that guests have come to appreciate at our museum. — Ken Haim
Petersburg, KY, USA — Ken Haim, president/CEO of Answers in Genesis (AiG), has announced that enough money had been raised for the Ark Encounter bond offering to allow the release of the funds to start construction of the Ark project in Williamstown, Kentucky.

Under Ham’s direction, a full-scale 510-foot-long Noah’s Ark will be built as the featured attraction at the Ark Encounter. Research indicates that the Ark, located south of Cincinnati in Grant County, Kentucky will draw up to 2 million people in its first year. The Ark Encounter will be built on 800 acres off I-75 and in phases over many years. The Ark and other supporting elements will open during phase one. The first phase will cost an estimated $73 million. Several million dollars in donations and Ark boarding passes (memberships) had been raised prior to the bond offering, and most of that amount has already been used to pay for the Ark’s land, secure permits and licenses, clear the property, draw architectural plans, and design the exhibits.

Meanwhile, with the Creation Museum in Petersburg, Ky. successfully drawing two million guests in six years, AiG is master-planning its expansion (40 miles from the Ark site) to handle an anticipated 50% attendance increase when the Ark opens.

“Even in a difficult economy, tens of thousands of supporters have made donations, purchased bonds, or bought Ark boarding passes in the past three years,” Ham observed. “With the funding in place to build the Ark, it is now our goal to raise an additional $15 million in donations to provide additional attractions like the special high-tech and interactive exhibits that guests have come to appreciate at our museum.”

With the completion of the bond offering, the next milestone is groundbreaking, for which a tentative date will be announced in a few weeks.

Answers in Genesis is a biblical apologetics ministry. This month, more than two million people visited its website. AiG conducts about 300 teaching meetings each year, publishes the award-winning family magazine “Answers,” and produces the “Answers” radio program heard on more than 700 stations in the U.S. www.ArkEncounter.com.

Warm Weather Helps Keep Kentucky Kingdom Construction On Schedule For May Opening

Louisville, KY, USA — Ed Green reports in Louisville Business First on how warmer than usual weather has aided the park’s construction:

‘Dozens of workers could be seen across the park during a visit Thursday.

“John Mulcahy, director of marketing and communication for Kentucky Kingdom, warned me not to be fooled by the fact that a new steel roller coaster — Lightening Run — is just now being assembled. Or that only one of the six new slides and rides planned for the expansive water park has been constructed, and very little concrete has been poured for the wave pool and adventure river planned in the Hurricane Bay Beach Club.

“He said all of the work, which is costing an estimated $44.5 million, will be done in time for a May 24 opening.

“Fall was very good to us,” he said, adding that mild temperatures in late fall and early winter allowed workers to complete much of the deferred maintenance of rides and painting and construction of buildings.

“Work was slowed a bit in late January and early February, “but you just plug along, you make it up on the weekends,” Mulcahy said.

“He noted that the investments so far also include about $1 million in a new point-of-sales system for the gates, restaurants and shops in the 63-acre theme park.”

Full House for Fulldome: Record registration for IMERSA Summit signals high interest in immersive dome experiences

Are digital planetariums the new frontier of immersive media experiences? The organizers and participants of IMERSA Summit 2014, looking at a full house for their March 6-9 gathering in Denver, would say “yes.” With more than 175 delegates registered, IMERSA, a trade group now in its 6th year, sees validation of its message of opportunity and convergence. The Summit theme: “Shaping the future of digital immersive spaces.”

Over the past 15 years, hundreds of planetariums around the world have replaced opto-mechanical starball projectors with sophisticated multi-projector, 360 digital dome (“fulldome”) systems – quietly growing an international network of high-end specialty theaters that keep pushing the technology envelope – some all the way to 8K stereo 3D at 60 frames per second.

IMERSA was founded on a vision of fulldome’s potential to drive the future of immersive experiences for education and entertainment. “Specialty cinema niches are the laboratories where new media-based experiences are developed and perfected – eventually to be adopted into the mainstream,” says IMERSA Summit chair Dan Neafus. “’Gravity 3D’ with its multiple Academy Awards is a prime example – it’s a masterful integration of storytelling tools, science visualization and imaging techniques that migrated to the mainstream from giant screen cinema and motion rides. And right now, fulldome cinema, which is still primarily in planetariums, is a smoking hot laboratory.”

The first 8K fulldome systems and fulldome 8K content are showing up. There are about half a dozen 8K fulldome installations so far around the world, including one with stereo 3D at the Macao Science Center. The brand new 8K fulldome system at Fiske Planetarium in Boulder will be the setting of the closing sessions for IMERSA Summit 2014.

Starball projectors aren’t disappearing across the board – some facilities opt to integrate them with fulldome to create a “hybrid” system; lasers and other forms of media are being introduced as well. For planetariums, it is a time of experimentation, creativity and cross-pollination.

IMERSA Summit participants come from media production, tech, museums and the entertainment world: pano-photography, video gaming, animation, digital image capture, projection, giant screen cinema, content distribution, visitor attractions. Some of this year’s outstanding names include: Dr Donna Cox of the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (keynote), Jeri Panek of Evans & Sutherland (IMERSA lifetime achievement honoree), veteran industry consultant Ian McLennan, Doug Roberts of Microsoft Research’s WorldWide Telescope, former Disney creative executive Rick Rothschild of FAR Out! Creative Direction, celebrated media producer Daren Ulmer of Mousetrappe, SIGGRAPH president Jeff Jortner, Andrew Johnston of NASM and Sky-Skan president Steve Savage.

IMERSA’s 4-person board includes 3 of the original founders: Dan Neafus, manager of the Gates Planetarium at the Denver Museum of Nature & Science, Ryan Wyatt, director of sci the California Academy of Sciences (San Francisco) and Ed Lantz of Vortex Immersion, plus Michael Daut, director of show production, Evans & Sutherland. Supporting IMERSA with communications and development is Judith Rubin.

IMERSA

IMERSA is a professional trade association recognized as a non-profit 501 (c) (6) Corp. IMERSA’s vision: To build an international community of professionals who create large-scale immersive digital experiences. IMERSA’s mission: To advance and promote the art and science of large-scale digital immersive media, fulldome, and immersive group experiences in digital planetariums, mobile domes, themed entertainment and giant screen theaters. www.imersa.org

What is fulldome?
Fulldome is digital video projected onto, and filling, a hemispherical dome screen. A fulldome system can range from a single fisheye projector for a small portable dome, to 20+ edge blended projectors for the largest domes (up to 80 feet in diameter). Fulldome systems can play back “pre-rendered” shows, and also generate real-time imagery and navigate digital databases. The first fulldome systems grew out of the digital planetarium industry and advances in computer graphics. Fulldome systems continue to improve with advances in digital cinema and there are now systems capable of showing movies at 8K resolution, 60 frames per second and in stereo 3D.

SeaWorld, Aquatica, and BuschGardens Announce Dates for 2014 Attractions
As part of its continuing commitment to new technology that enhances the guest experience, SeaWorld’s 50th Celebration will include new ways for fans to connect to the parks and each other though digital devices. The parks will be launching a variety of enhancements, from interactive apps that provide fun new ways to experience the park to new games and video content.
Orlando, FL, USA (February 28, 2013)– SeaWorld Parks & Entertainment is getting ready for a multi-park celebration to commemorate a key event in the company’s history. The original SeaWorld park opened its gates for the first time in March 1964 on Mission Bay in San Diego.

SeaWorld’s 50th Celebration will feature a Sea of Surprises starting March 21, 2014. SeaWorld parks in San Diego, Orlando, Fla. and San Antonio will share the excitement throughout an 18-month celebration that highlights some of the most memorable SeaWorld experiences.

For nearly five decades, SeaWorld has surprised and amazed guests with unique entertainment, thrilling rides and up-close encounters with marine animals. During SeaWorld’s 50th Celebration visitors will be invited to take part in the celebration through new interactive experiences, shows and pathway performances, even more up-close animal encounters throughout the park and the SeaWorld “Surprise Squad” treating guests with prizes every day.

SeaWorld’s 50th Celebration Sea of Surprises Highlights

 • Each SeaWorld park will feature a new entertainment element as part of the 50th Celebration.  While San Antonio will introduce a new ski show and Orlando will debut Madagascar Live! Operation: Vacation, SeaWorld San Diego will mark the occasion by completely transforming the park’s arrival experience. The creation of Explorer’s Reef, which will open on March 21 for the celebration kick-off, will immediately immerse park guests into an undersea oasis. This massive construction project is reinventing how guests will approach, enter and explore the park. The new arrival experience was inspired by waves crashing over a coral reef, as well as up-close encounters with marine life. Visitors will actually enter the park beneath an immense wave sculpture that is nearly 30 feet tall and 100 feet long. SeaWorld will also replace existing ticket booths with a beach-themed, concierge-style ticketing area that will provide guests with a single location to purchase admission and sign up for tours, animal interactions and dining experiences.

From the moment they enter the park, guests can connect with the sea through multiple touch pools featuring shark pups, rays, skates and delicate little cleaner fish. Encompassing more than three acres, Explorer’s Reef also will include new and innovative retail and culinary opportunities for guests. The multi-million dollar renovation effort will make entering SeaWorld faster and more efficient.

 • As part of SeaWorld’s 50th Celebration, there will be more surprise encounters with animal ambassadors throughout the day.  A pair of Magellanic penguins, a sloth or even a parade of flamingos could surprise guests at any moment at all three SeaWorld locations.
 • SeaWorld is known for amazing animal shows and each park will have something new for the 50th celebration. Even park pathways will come to life withspontaneous entertainment at unexpected moments, including performers with sea-inspired costumes and props, a bubble brigade and splash mob.
 • The SeaWorld “Surprise Squad” will roam the SeaWorld parks on a daily basis giving away prizes and special gifts. Guests could receive exclusive access to rides or behind-the-scenes experiences, celebration T-shirts or Shamu-themed merchandise, reserved show seating and more.
 • To showcase SeaWorld’s commitment to the environment and passion for protecting the ocean, a series of giant sea life sculptures will be displayed throughout the parks. SeaWorld commissioned environmental art group Washed Ashore for a collection of larger-than-life sea-themed sculptures— many weighing more than half a ton.  The materials used to creates these pieces come from the billions of pounds of garbage mostly plastics— that wind up in our oceans. These amazing works of art point to the urgent need to protect marine animals from such dangers and preserve their ocean habitats.  At SeaWorld San Diego (located near Cirque Stadium), the sculptures will depict a sea turtle, a tufted puffin, a trigger fish and sea lilies (sea animals that look like plants, but are related to starfish, sand dollars and sea urchins).

At Aquatica San Antonio, support columns for Roa’s Aviary went vertical this week.  Beginning May 2014, Aquatica, SeaWorld’s Waterpark, will introduce this 13,500 square feet aviary containing about 300 birds representing more than 50 species. The newest attraction will be one of the park’s serene offerings, giving guests the chance to float, wade or walk among hundreds of tropical birds. Some of the birds are considered threatened or endangered and the aviary will help in conservation efforts.

The aviary and new pools will be located on the Loggerhead Beach area of Aquatica, creating a new “waterfront beach” for guests to enjoy. Guests will be able to access the aviary by floating along Loggerhead Lane river, walking through Loggerhead Baech or wading in a new pool with a grotto-style waterfall. Guests will have the opportunity to hand feed birds as SeaWorld aviculturists and educators will be on hand to teach guests about these animals. When Aquatica waterpark closes for the season, SeaWorld guests will be able to access the aviary.

Aquatica Orlando announced a May 9 opening date for Ihu’s Breakaway Falls.  Guests will brave the watery free-fall on the all-new drop slide — the tallest, steepest and only multi-drop tower of its kind in Orlando.  The slide is named after Ihu, Aquatica, SeaWorld’s Waterpark Orlando’s colorful gecko, who searches for the biggest thrills, steepest hills and the coolest spills in the waterpark.

Busch Gardens Tampa announced a May 1 opening date for Falcon’s Fury and the new Pantopia themed land.  Located in the heart of Busch Gardens, the centerpiece of Pantopia will be Falcon’s Fury. The one-of-a-kind drop tower will stand at 335 feet and beckon guests from across the globe as it takes riders soaring straight down. At the ride’s highest point there is an element of surprise.  Like its bird of prey namesake, riders will pivot 90 degrees in midair to a face-down dive position. An instant later they’ll plunge 60 mph at 3.5 Gs straight down.

In addition to Falcon’s Fury, this completely reimagined land will be a creative haven that has been inspired by centuries of world travelers, offering something for every member of the family.

“In addition to the power and allure of Falcon’s Fury, Pantopia will celebrate the spirit of animals, welcome adventurers from the four corners of the earth, explore ancient lore and display fantastic architecture,” says Busch Gardens Park President Jim Dean. “Guests will find multiple portals and doorways and learn about the legends that have drawn journeyers from around the world to Pantopia. Plus, family favorites like the Scorpion, Phoenix, Bush Flyers, Desert Runners and the Kiddie Train will return.”
